Annie Bynnol   612 #37 Posted March 8, 2018 Anyway, that road- even if completed- won't actually link Sheffield and Manchester. The airport's not even in Greater Manchester!  Manchester Airport is within the City of Manchester except part of the new runway.  All the terminals, original runway, hangars, offices etc. are within the City of Manchester boundary  Now you know that the A555 exists and will be completed this year, you can look it up on a OS map and you will see that both ends of the A555 will be in or Stockport (High Lanes)and the City of Manchester (Airport) as is at least 50% of the route. Stockport and the City Manchester are former bits of Greater Manchester.
 Share this content via...
Jeffrey Shaw   90 #38 Posted March 13, 2018 Stockport and the City Manchester are former bits of Greater Manchester. No, they're still both in Greater Manchester.
 Share this content via...
myriad   10 #39 Posted March 14, 2018 It's High Lane not Lanes  The more routes the merrier though. Castleton - Winnats Pass - A6 is generally favourable but it does depend on time and day of the week as the daytripper/tourist traffic kills it. Annie Bynnol   612 #40 Posted March 14, 2018 No, they're still both in Greater Manchester.  As is most of the Airport and the A555 which you say is not listed. Having made the original mistake of saying that "The airport's not even in Greater Manchester! " are you saying that it is in City of Manchester which is part of Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago?  In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986 with the City of Manchester becoming the unitary authority for the area. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities existed until April 2011. Then the Greater Manchester Combined Authority was established as the strategic county-wide authority. The Mayor of Greater Manchester from 4 May 2017 has additional powers.  The airport is still mainly in City of/Greater Manchester. The A57 was closed again yesterday due to a crash.  Crashes last week closed both Snake and Woodhead.
 Share this content via...
Jeffrey Shaw   90 #42 Posted March 18, 2018 Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago? In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986. Both are wrong, in part. Although I agree that all six Metropolitan County Councils were abolished, their counties were not.  ---------- Post added 18-03-2018 at 15:26 ----------  They're certainly needed. The A57 was closed again yesterday due to a crash. Crashes last week closed both Snake and Woodhead. Both (A57 and A628 ) are closed today, too. Annie Bynnol   612 #43 Posted March 18, 2018 Editing quotes is not fair as it can change the intended meaning.  You quoted me as saying:  Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago?  In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986.  I actually said: Having made the original mistake of saying that "The airport's not even in Greater Manchester! " are you saying that it is in City of Manchester which is part of Greater Manchester which ceased to exist over 30 years ago?  In very similar ways to South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986 with the City of Manchester becoming the unitary authority for the area.[/i]  Remember the gist of this is that your claim that Manchester airport is not in Manchester which apart from part of the new runway is wrong. No. Manchester Airport is certainly not in the Metropolitan Borough of Manchester.
 Share this content via...
Annie Bynnol   612 #45 Posted March 21, 2018 No. Manchester Airport is certainly not in the Metropolitan Borough of Manchester.  Where do you think it is?  You also claim in a previous post that "The airport's not even in Greater Manchester!"  Manchester Airport is within the boundary of Woodhouse Park Ward except part of the new runway. All the terminals, original runway, hangars, offices etc. are within the boundary.  Woodhouse Park Ward elects councillors to Manchester City Council. The Lord Mayor of Manchester is a councillor of this ward.  The "...Metropolitan Borough of Manchester." calls itself the City of Manchester and Manchester City Council-one of the nine divisions of the former Greater Manchester City Council which became unitary authorities when the GMCC was abolished.  As to Borough Councils, there are nine metropolitan councils in Greater Manchester seven call themselves borough councils and two call themselves city councils. Manchester City Council (aka City of Manchester) is a borough council in that it was a subdivision of the former Greater Manchester County Council. alchresearch   214 #46 Posted March 22, 2018 No. Manchester Airport is certainly not in the Metropolitan Borough of Manchester.  Looks like it on this map:  http://www.mancky.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/postcodemap.jpg  Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million.  It encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises ten metropolitan boroughs:  Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. Jeffrey Shaw   90 #47 Posted March 25, 2018 Where do you think it is? Yes, I now agree that Manchester City Council's area includes the airport. The map at which I looked is a little misleading in its colour referencing; on a closer inspection, I find that you're right.
