Whatever happened to Andy Bentley. Boss man late 60's/70's I think. Same school in 50's. Joe Cocker as well.

IIRC an ex-employee of ours used to be the accountant (or at least worked in the accounts office) at Bentley's on Saville Street. He came to our business in 1979 to work for my late father. His name (accountant) was John Wright and he worked for us for twenty years.

He told me that Bentley's went belly-up after one of the brothers took on a massive loan to finance the new showroom that was built on the site (maybe across the road)? against the interests of the other directors.

Guess I ought to add 'allegedly' to these comments.

Oh, and didn't Bentley's have a showroom near to where the University tramstop is (when the road was single carriage)?

you are right on the reason for closing.

Where do you mean near the tramstop?

Between University roundabout and Glossop Road/Hanover Way (?) junction.

It was, IIRC, a single storey building on the left hand side of the carriageway as you travel away from the University roundabout toward Glossop Road. There was a back lane between this building and the barracks (which front Glossop Road and Gell Street).

I'm sure there used to be Vauxhalls and Opels in the showroom windows hence leading to my belief that it was part of Bentley's.

I recall going past the place on a bus which took my class to Glossop Road swimming baths. That would have been 1978/1979.

(As a side note, the lime drink I used to get from the vending machine in the foyer at Glossop Road baths used to cost 7p!)

I went to Greenhill County School with a David Bentley in the 1950s. I believe he was the owners son and the family lived somewhere close to Meadowhead. Should David read this post then I have a couple of school class photos with him on and would be happy to forward them or give them to him when I visit Sheffield in a few weeks time.
