Pubs in Sheffield shutting down

Pubs will shut as long as people don't use them

If you think too many pubs are closing now, just wait till the smoking ban starts to hit trade.

What a shame! I heard it won the 'Under Age Pub of The Year' award last year.

It held that title for over 20 years ........

Apparantly it was raided and was full of youngsters...landlord lost his licence

The Harrow should be a good pub. Its in a decent spot.

There are too many dodgy landlords that are getting away with creating/running *&%! pubs that appeal to the lowest common denominator and bring down the tone of the surrounding area. Really gets my blood boiling.

There must be at least ten times as many pubs / bars in the city centre than there used to be say 15 years ago.

Yup...a lot of new bars opened....but lots of pubs lost in the city centre. I'd say it'd probably be about even.....

its on the enterprise website..£10k to take the lease, not sure what the rent is but u can be sure its fully tied (meaning beer costs twice as much). Maybe someone should offer them nothing and just open it for them lol cos an empty pub makes nothing, at least you would be selling their beer for them!

Funny you should mention that - on a recent visit to Kelham Island Brewery, Dave Wickett (the businessman that owns the brewery, Fat Cat pub, Champs sports bar and various other concerns) mentioned that he had tried to buy some of the failed pubs in the area and the pub companies refused to sell it for use as a pub as they were worried that he might actually make a success of it and take trade away from other pubs in the area owned by the same company!

Unfortunately Zippyzag your statement isnt quite right.

The reason that these pubs can afford to sell beer at these prices is because they are brewery owned and are taking maximum discount from the breweries.

A brewery owned pub will only pay 50p a pint for their costs, therefore making the same amount of profit a tenant pub would make selling the same beer purchsed for 1.25 being sold at 2.45 a pint.

It is not greed on the landlord/tenants part it is the only price they can afford to sell it at. As more and more pubs go from freehold to leasehold you will see more prices rise. Enterprise and punch now own approx 10,000 pubs between them. And they will even overpay to get a freehold as they are in it for the long run so any profitable pubs will go their way.

It is better for the brewery to take away all its responsibility regarding staff, buliding maintenance, management and insurance and to sell the lease of the business to someone who is willing to make the effort for less money! They still continue to make money from the property increase in valuation as well as maintain their beer sales through tied leases charging more per barrel to supplement their rent income.
