Sheffield Photography group FAQs

Recommended Posts

This new thread will hopefully turn into a list of the most common questions we get asked.

I'm in the process of writing it at the moment, so bear with me if it looks wrong (or just very quiet) right now! :)

What software should I get?

There are a number of very good software packages out there. Most popular for obvious reasons are the free ones! A number of these are listed here. Initial comments are mine, I've tried to keep them objective but please let me know if they could be improved! Also shout if any of the links don't work...

Free software

GIMP - the GNU Image Manipulation Program. Available for many operating systems, but notorious for its interface - you'll either love it or hate it!

Picasa - from Google, Picasa is a photo organiser as well as editor. Prides itself on being easy to use yet powerful.

Paint.NET - Windows only but many advanced features (layers, effects, plugins etc) and active online community.

IrfanView - simple interface, great for batch conversions of photos. Also reads most RAW files through plugins.

Retail software

Adobe Photoshop - The industry standard. Amazingly powerful, but amazingly expensive too :)

Adobe Photoshop Elements - Much cheaper, and still has most of the tools that most people would use.

Paint Shop Pro - A traditional sensibly priced alternative to Photoshop.
