  1. Comedy as it should be! Although he popped-up on SF some years ago, when appearing at local stand-up venues (see https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/search/?q=wrigglesworth&quick=1), he's now a BBC Radio 4 regular. His idiosyncratic local style is very effective and highly recommended even for people not actually from/in Sheffield. You can catch his most recent series currently being repeated on Radio4Extra late every Monday night or, via BBC Sounds. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06qkp8n

With a disarmingly charming delivery and unforgettable appearance, this Yorkshire funny man became a national have-a-go-hero when he rescued a little old lady from the jaws of a Virgin train ticket inspector; only to be arrested for begging. His subsequent story of the event secured Tom several awards including the Chortle Best Show Award, and a nomination for the main Edinburgh Comedy Award. This led to a sell out tour of the UK, and runs at the New Zealand Comedy Festival and prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival. Following this, Tom recorded two series of ‘Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Letters’ for BBC Radio 4, tackling consumer issues in his own hilarious way and winning a highly acclaimed Sony Award for best Radio Comedy along the way. His next radio project, ‘Tom Wrigglesworth’s Hang Ups’ for BBC Radio 4 is currently in its second series and focuses on telephone conversations with his parents. As a natural and engaging television presenter, Tom put his technical background to use when he appeared on ‘Electric Dreams’ for BBC 2, advising a modern family as they fast forwarded through three decades of technology. He then presented Engineering Giants, also for BBC 2, which saw Tom climbing aboard an oil platform, servicing a passenger ferry and dismantling a jumbo-jet whilst interviewing various engineers to keep the viewers informed as the three major strip downs unfolded. Further television credits include being a regular contributor on The Discovery Channel where he explains the science behind crowd sourced stunts and experiments on the popular show ‘ You have been warned’ He is also known for his uncanny resemblance to Green Bay Packers Quarter back Aaron Rodgers and worked with NFL films to create ‘The Incredible Mr Wrigglesworth’. This short film which featured Tom performing in Green Bay, receiving the key to the city and coming his face to face with his doppleganger became a viral You Tube hit. Since winning the Channel 4 new comedian competition, ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ in 2003, Tom is now firmly established as one of the most original, talented and respected comedians on the UK and International comedy circuit.

Sally has developed a unique brand of sweet young lady cum sharp-witted fox, wrapped in layers of eminently likeable stage persona. 7. I've been a radio listener to the gentle humour of Tom Wrigglesworth's 'Open Letters' and 'Hang Ups' for going on a decade (?) now. I love how his mum and dad still answer the phone with "Sheffield, 61977".
  8. You have an older message on Sheffield forum, regarding Roy Wrigglesworth. You mention Roy being a grandfather to you. I am doing research on my family tree and I believe Roy would have been a first cousin to me. His parents Arthur Fred Wrigglesworth and Doris Whittaker. Doris was an Aunt of mine, she was my dads sister. If you have further details on the family I would most appreciate it. ---------- Post added 30-11-2016 at 08:27 ---------- If you are the granddaughter of Roy Wrigglesworth can you contact me regarding the Wrigglesworth family please Barry Whittaker [email protected]

  11. The older I get the more I need to find out whether I’m the last of a long line of schoolkids born in the 1920s. I’m currently wondering about Austin Twigg, born Nidd Road 18 April 1929 0r 1930 (his birthday’s the same day as mine). Roy Wrigglesworth, as a boy lived first street on the right, at the bottom of Prince of Wales Road. It was a cul de sac adjacent to the old White City Greyhound Stadium. Roy Proctor, lived somewhere in Walkley; Pat Bray (son of nurseryman) lived just off Ecclesall Road, somewhere opposite Hickmott Road. Eric Hobson, former Hunter’s Bar Junior School pupil; Lloyd Lloyd, as a boy lived at 21 Deep Lane, Shiregreen; Frank Bailey, lived Greystones area; Patricia Taylor, lived Rustlings Road and became a dancer; the Robinson twins, lived in Hickmott Road area (bottom of Neal Road, turn left and last house on corner of Ecclesall Road). Teresa Wright (no relation); Philip Scholey, his father had builder’s yard on Sharrow Vale Road opposite Hunter’s Bar School; Edgar Wallace, also Sharrow Vale Road (born, I think 1935) on same day as Edgar Wallace died; hence the Edgar). Any information greatly appreciated.
  12. Listen to (Sheffield's own) Tom Wrigglesworth ranting about changing suppliers http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00y92mb#play I heard it last night on Radio 4 Extra. It is very wry and disturbingly accurate!
  13. 21 years after moving to 7-digit numbers. It's as though people in 1985 were still quoting their telephone numbers with 5 digits. ...as Tom Wrigglesworth's parents do 51 years after moving to six digits...

  16. Hello, Sheffield Comedy Festival is back and starts today. There is some fantastic comedy on offer starting today with 2 fantastic shows from the Edinburgh festival. Sheffield comedian Tom Wrigglesworth brings his Edinburgh award nominated show Tom Wrigglesworth's Open Return Letter to Richard Branson to the City Hall tonight. I saw it on Tuesday and it is outstanding. Highly recommended and deserved its nomination and all the 5 * reviews. Tom is definitely one of the best stand ups in country. Also Zoe Lyons brings her Miss Machismo to the Lescar. Zoe is a very funny comedian who won best joke of the Edinburgh festival last year and was in the top ten again this year so you are guaranteed to laugh. Also at the Lescar is Ladies night - whoever says women aren't funny needs to go and see how wrong they are as Karen Bayley, Lou Conran and Mel Moon will raise the roof. I am not an organiser of the Festival just a comedy fan who wants to see the festival get bigger and better each year from the support of the people from Sheffield! Festival detail can be found here http://www.sheffieldcomedyfestival.com/index.html

  18. Having watched live stand-up on a weekly basis for almost the last 20 years, I thought that I’d give my recommendations for who to see during the Sheffield comedy festival. Having read through the brochure, I’m amazed how many shows are under a tenner for a full one hour show. These are my personal favorites. Kai Humphries - (Oct 2nd, Lescar, £6). Catch him before he’s famous & charging a lot more. Sol Bernstein – (2nd, Lescar, £6). Just one word “LEGEND”. Geoff Norcott – (3rd, Lescar, £6). The smooth southerner. Gavin Webster – (4th, Lescar, £6).Comedians, comedian. Comics go to watch Gavin on their night off! Jason Cook – (5th, Memorial Hall, £12). Writer of BBC2 series ‘Hebbern’. Had me in stitches just last week. Jim Smallman – (6th, Corperation, £6). Since moving to Wales rarely plays Sheffield. Hobgoblin Comedy Award Heat – (8th, Royal Standard, £4). You usually find a gem at these nights. Steve Gribbin – (9th, Lescar, £6). If you love music & comedy, you’ll love Steve. Lloyd Langford – (10th, Lescar, £6). Last time I saw him he dressed as a banana!! Eddy Brimson – (10th, Lescar, £6). Hemels best. Tony Jameson – (11th, Lescar, £. Brill show for football/computer games fans. Duncan Oakley – (22nd, Royal Standard, £6). Musical, off-the-wall, crazy & hilarious. Sam & Tom – (22nd, Royal Standard, £3). Last seen with Stapleface. Sketch comedy at its best. Christian Riley – (23rd, Lescar, £6). Worth the entrance fee just to hear his Arctic Monkeys cover. Keith Carter – (23rd, Lescar, £6). Keith brings a new character to the stage, so new I’ve not seen him yet! Carl Hutchinson – (25th, Lescar, £6). Chris Ramseys tour support act & all-round nice guy. Matt Reed – (25th, Lescar, £6). Buy him a G&T and he’ll have you in stitches all night. Silky – (26th, Lescar, £6). Saw him for the first time 2 weeks ago & I’ll definitely be back for this one. There are also loads of kids shows on during the festival, but, as I don’t have any kids I haven’t seen them. However, I’m thinking of borrowing one for the day on Sat 18th so as I can actually get to watch Phil Ellis in his kids show ‘Fun & Gamez’. The feedback I’ve heard from this show in Edinburgh is phenomenal. Almost 30 shows. I tried to make the list shorter, but didn’t want anyone to miss out on some top shows. Hope to see some of you at a few of the shows. If you see an ugly old bloke with bleached hair, come over & say hi. BB.
  19. Ah Tramlines, good old Tramlines, our third year with the festival, and what a festival it has become. In past years we’ve thrown parties at The Great Gatsby, The Redhouse, DQ and The West End. This year we’re very happily taking on two venues who were absolutely integral to the very creation of the festival in the first place – The Bowery and The Harley. In true Tramlines fashion we’ve attempted to encapsulate a wide variety of acts and genres within our line up; some are familiar faces at Cool Beans events, some have never even set foot in the city, some have even shamed themselves at past Cool Beans events by insulting all crowd and staff in the venue. A mixed bag I’m sure you’ll agree. And if you don’t agree we BANISH you from STEPPING FOOT on this PLANET. Now, some of the details on the Tramlines website and in the Tramlines programme aren’t correct. You have 500 acts to deal with, sometimes things can get confusing. Big shout out to Alex Deadman who I believe was in charge of sitting at a desk sweating away and programming all the info. So if you’re out and about and on the **** and can’t remember what’s cracking off, whip out your smart phone and check out this Mega Blog of Dreams & Desires. 20. You should have gone to court - If they've been falsifying documents that's perverting the course of justice and someone should have to go to prison for that. Personally I'd have a word with a solicitor, you'll get a free initial interview and maybe even get a "pro bono publico" representation. I recently took a train journey for the first time in over 30 years and have to admit I was a bit nervous about making a mistake and ending up in bother. As well as my tickets I took screen dumps of the online booking process. If you can, try to find a recording of Tom Wrigglesworth's radio programme about his experience of a train guard's treatment of an elderly female passenger who made a mistake with her tickets.
  21. Hi sadabbott. I lived there from being born 1948 till 1966. I think the shop you're referring to was Tinsdales as mentioned in earlier posts. Am interested to know where you lived on Green Oak Rd . ---------- Post added 28-04-2013 at 20:46 ---------- Hi pennina. I used to knock about with Stubby and Sid. I couldnt place a Pam but I do now remember a Mick Beever. I also remember Steve Wrigglesworth and Becky Law. Stubby an Sid were part of the crowd that had a massive kick about every Sunday afternoon. Probably about 15 a side sun, rain or snow. Stubby had a brother, I think, that lived near Derby and we used to get a team together and go over and play them now and again. You're right. The park was always well kept but was absolutely sodden in parts all year round.
  22. The years approximately 1961/2 ish. I was born in 1947 and attended All Saints C of E School. 1952 to 1963. Pam Beever had a brother Michael, they lived on Lemont Road, Becky Law lived on Aldam Road, also remember Michael Wright (Bergy) Roy Stubbs, Stephen Wrigglesworth, Syd Smith, Gail Billing. They were the people who hung around in Green Oak Park. Happy days. The park was always well looked after and we were always careful not to annoy the "parkie".

Watch Wil inhabit the world of Grease and the Pink Ladies, Carry On films, and female superheroes/ supervillains.
