  1. I do stop at the red lights or i move onto the cycle path to get round them - which is entirely legal.
  2. i said at congested times somewhere. But even outside of rush hour I can beat cars down penistone road. There's so many traffic lights that the average speed is only about 20 mph which is easy enough on a bike.
  3. but that isn't true is it? You overtake the cyclist, accelerate to 40, then stop in the next queue and the cyclist catches you up again. Like I say its an illusion. I've been cycling down penistone road for the last 20 years and I regularly make a note of which cars are by me when I'm in hlllsborough. Without going through red lights I always overtake far more cars than overtake me and beat maybe 20 cars or more to derek dooley way. Unless its 3am or something. It only makes a difference where there are no traffic lights or roundabouts. All you do by accelerating to high speeds and then braking is use more fuel.
  4. i wish everyone would stop labouring under the illusion that in a congested urban environment if you can drive faster you'll get there quicker. Sure your peak speed may increase but your average will not. If you want to get there quicker, get a bike...
  5. Its possible to be incredibly offensive without saying a single swear word. It possible to say swearwords without being at all offensive. Blindly telling kids they shouldn't swear fails to teach them what is offensive and inoffensive language. my son says S h 1 t all the time, I don't see it as any different to poo. It isn't really is it...means exactly the same thing. but if he starts taunting or jibing his sister, I tell him not to and if he continues tell him severely not to etc. thats the difference, no swearing is a pointless rule, teaching kids how to communicate will help them as adults.
  6. hillsborough steel stock ltd, wadsley bridge. Got some 2mm sheet steel for not much from there (something like 2mmx2mx1m for 15 quid but im guessing a bit) http://www.hillsboroughsteelstock.co.uk/
  7. and the impending demise of the human race...
  8. whether its right or wrong, its helluva of lot of effort to go to just to prove a point. i would probably have got a bit annoyed about being turned down and then just found a different cake shop.
  9. all adverts are annoying without exception. Quite how anyone puts up with a film being interrupted by adverts every 20 minutes is beyond me. Thank f for the likes of Netflix and of course the BBC
  10. I can recommend: http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/schofferhofer-hefeweizen
  11. Could it be that your hot water dispenser is the thing that is causing the difference? Not just the difference in temperature. I'd argue you should be making one cup of coffee with boiling water, then the second when the same kettle of water goes down to 90 degrees. Also is 90 degrees supposed to the optimum temp? Whats the theory? https://www.thekitchn.com/do-you-need-to-worry-about-water-temperature-when-brewing-coffee-smart-coffee-regular-joes-216229 There's good vid on there. Basically, you pour boiling water into a not pre-heated cafetiere and the water temp will drop very rapidly. Also there's no mention of "burning" in the vid. There's an optimum temp for extracting the oils that make it smell and taste nice which is between 91 and 95 degrees but really its the quality of the beans that makes the biggest difference.
  12. There are a great many things that people will claim you should and should not do when it comes to tea and coffee making/drinking. All of it as far as I can tell is largely meaningless. However, I think that tea and coffee making and drinking is a ritual. I think people like and need ritual and having a cup of tea made through a specific method at the same time of day gives people some comfort or structure.
  13. this is like the "whoever posts last on this thread wins" thread and arguably equally pointless.
  14. i think given the medical professions don't have a cure for alzheimers, you aren't going to find one by posting on internet fora
  15. some men have small hands. I think its small handist that they haven't been considered in the above argument about sexism.
  16. if done with adequate caution at a slow speed when there's plenty of space and no junctions I don't really see the issue.
  17. On penistone road, for example, with slow moving traffic, undertaking is absolutely fine, legally permissible and safe, in any vehicle. https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/legal/undertaking/
  18. Personally i see filtering as being something that's a bit of a grey area (not illegal but not entirely advised in all circumstances) and definitely isn't something I do thinking I had the full weight of the law behind me, nor would I think if someone didn't see me as they swapped lanes that it would be entirely their fault. I do it (and I do it frequently) fully aware of how invisible I am and if there's any chance of a car swapping lanes, I proceed with considerable caution. I was behind a cyclist (woman, not that that's relevant, but I'd imagine most would assume its a man) who got knocked off doing exactly the above on penistone road. The woman in the car just didn't see her and swapped lanes. The cyclist wasn't expecting it. We can sit here all day and argue about who's fault it was but really its just a mistake by the driver (not seeing the cyclist) and a lack of defensive riding by the cyclist. I think I have noticed a tendency on fora and I have probably been guilty of this in the past, for cyclists to expect drivers to see them "because they should". Its not the case, as a cyclist you have to ride defensively for the sake of self preservation (I know you do,cyclone). Its not the fault of drivers that you have to ride like this, its simply because cyclists are small and so less visible relative to other vehicles. Ideally there'd be lovely segregated prioritised cycle paths to ride on everywhere, but there isn't.
  19. Yes i always thought this is somewhat overlooked. Really every train would have to be on their own line. I feel that it is terrible how such fundamental engineering principles are ignored in children's programs. Thomas should be saying things like, "Oh no! The signal person is unable to set the route to switch to the second line at the next points as the signalling block is already occupied!"
  20. like everything else relating to cycling. I think it could be said that no one has achieved anything posting about such matters on online fora.
