  1. I live in Crookes and like the area. It is a mixture of families, students and older residents who all seem to rub along well and create a lively and vibrant atmosphere. The high street has been spruced up a lot in the recent years and there are some great shops, restaurants, cafes, takeaways, charity shops (quality bargains lol!) and pubs. Commuting to work, Universities, hospitals, many other areas of Sheffield is easy too. My road has all types of residents on it, and i wouldn't let the to let signs put you off, my neighbours rent their house and are a lot better neighbours than a lot of the owner occupiers I've lived next to! Only issue is parking that can be tricky, however this is not limited to Crookes and is the same in many other areas of Sheffield with majority terraced housing and narrow roads. We all seem to manage, many people have 2 cars and/or a van and there's always somewhere even if it's not always in front of the house :-) Altogether no area is everyone's cup of tea, but lots of people enjoy living here and consider it to be a sought after part of Sheffield.
  2. Thanks all for your replies - so helpful, I now have quite a long list of places to ring and get a quote from. Hopefully it will be a question of simply cutting a tiny piece out of the ring to make it smaller, there are no stones on it (well there are a few however they are in the 'second part' of the ring which is the bit that is welded to the ring part, if that makes sense!) It is a beautiful ring and I'm certain one of the jewellers you have recommended will do a good job of it. Re white gold (my ring is yellow gold, about 100 years old now, and still very yellow indeed lol!), you definitely need it replating every so often, as the top layer (the 'white' bit) rubs off with wear, even on the most expensive rings, and the ring becomes yellowy in colour as the bottom layer is exposed.
  3. I have a very special ring which is currently too big to wear without worrying about it all the time (even with sellotape wrapped round it, which is somewhat unsightly!) Where could I go to have it 'shrunk' (if this is posisble) and how much approx would this cost? The ring is originally made from a gold pin so it's literally a band of gold with the thickness of a pin/thick needle. Whether this will make the task more or less difficult I am not sure! Any advice please?
  4. The Blood Donor Centre in Sheffield is open late on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also if you go to the Blood Service website, you will find details of one-off sessions all over South Yorkshire/Derbyshire, a lot of those held on Saturdays/Sundays so it is easy to pop in on a morning at the weekend. I am so glad someone has started this post, I have been meaning to do this myself and if it helps to get even a handful more people to start giving blood, that would be fantastic. I have always struggled to understand why there is seemingly so little awareness of blood donation and such an obscenely small number of able people who donate, whether it is lack of awareness? fear of needles? anything else? I think all of us who donate blood should try and do something to raise people's awareness of it and encourage more to try it and carry it on throughout their lives. It is one of the most worthwhile and meaningful things a person can do. Re blood transfusions, I think it is only a problem if you had one after/before a certain year?
  5. Depends where you live, but I know someone who used to work at the Rising Sun in Ecclesall (on Abbey Lane). They were always taking on part-timers, quite flexible hours and you didn't need experience. I 'd give them a call. From my own experience some years ago looking for a part-time bar role, local pubs are worth a try. They don't always need experience. Areas such as Ecclesall, Fulwood, Nether Edge, Broomhill - don't know about other places though.
  6. Well mine is a used car so hopefully it will be a nice extra! And not one of those that sends you to dead ends all the time:-))
  7. Thanks for that, looks like I will have to check what this particular car is like!
  8. Hi, if a car has sat nav supplied by the manufacturer, does this normally mean the sat nav is 'embedded' in the car or can it be taken off? Thanks:-)
  9. Well at least you admitted that it might just sound snobbish lol! Aha.. of course you would say that, you live in Whirlow...some say that Whirlow starts at the bottom of Whirlowdale Rd at the traffic lights next to Robin Hood pub..or is that still Millhouses? Never mind, it's best not to get in a debate on which area starts where and whether any areas are better than others - too much has already been said on the subject here on the forum!
  10. Just goes to show that it isn't just the so-called 'bad' areas where incidents like this occur. Mind you, while I lived in Ranmoor there was an armed robbery at a Threshers wine shop and an incident where some armed thugs broke into a house and threatened a woman. I actually walked into tesco minutes after it happened, the police and ambulance were still there. Later on I found out from one of the staff that thank God nobody was seriously injured.
  11. I suppose you could say it is a problem with the internal structure of the building - and we are only discussing the exterior? It is certainly somewhat overwhelming, colourwise!
  12. I believe Archer Court is the new flats complex on Archer Rd, just before you get to the big Sainsbury's. I've seen "for sale" signs outside some time ago, can't remember who the agents were, but one of the big names. Might be worth ringing up a few, like ELR, Blundells, Lewis Wadsworth, to ask. Hope this helps!
  13. I might be moving to Nether Edge/Abbeydale Rd soon (it's off Abbeydale Rd, near Sheldon Rd) and would really appreciate some quick advice on the following: -where are the nearest supermarkets and other essentials eg late night grocers (I have a car but would like to know about places that are very close!) -what's the car insurance like, I'll have to change it from Broomhill where I live at the moment -any info/advice on crime - anything to be particularly concerned about? It seems a really good catch as it's very close to the nice bit of Nether Edge even though it's on the main road. But I haven't lived in that area before and would like to find out what other people's experience was/is of living there! Thanks a lot
  14. THanks for this - would he have any properties in the areas I'm looking for? THat seems to be the main problem..
  15. Hi there Am looking for a flat as I have to move out of my current one unfortunately (it's above a restaurant and this is causing problems!) Does anyone know of private landlords who own large numbers of properties in Sheffield whom I could contact? Estate agents never seem to have any properties that aren't overpriced and the choice is not vast. In my experience renting from private landlords can often be the best option.. Also, if you know of anyone renting out a good studio/1 bed flat with a washing machine in S10//S11 (probably unrealistic as S11 is so expensive!!) /S7 or possibly S8, please let me know on [email protected] or reply to this post I'm prepared to pay up to £350 (would rather not go as high though, unless the rent is inclusive of any extras!) Many thanks
