  1. I can think of one company in Sheffield that would still do that.
  2. Scary thing is I drove past there at around 9.10am this morning too !
  3. It'll become finally when testing is complete just like any other advertising hoarding around the country, showing something different every few minutes or so.
  4. The railway station is definately Beauchief, I have a book somewhere taken on the same platform as the train leaves and it is the exact same layout with the building on the far platform. If I find the book can I post a copy of the picture on here for reference or willl I be infringing copyright ?
  5. Something fishy about that post ! It was there again this lunchtime, brought a smile to my face as I was driving. Could it be a new idea to make people happy whilst they are driving by putting up happy pictures on billboards.
  6. What people also forget is that for HS2 to succeed it has to do what it's called and be High Speed. To get into Sheffield City Centre via either Sheffield Station or the old Victoria Site would mean not have the long straight or flowing curved track that will enable the trains to travel at the high speeds designated. If the high speed tracks were to be built into the city centre than more expensive tunnelling or heaven forbid wholesale demolition across swathes of land into the city centre would have to take place. The council are totally clueless on this and other matters.... I mean who in their right mind would knock down a less than 25 year old sports stadium that they are still paying for building ? And also don't forget the station is not just for the benefit of the people of Sheffield but for South Yorkshire in general. It will no doubt end up being called South Yorkshire Parkway or something similar.
  7. Christmas 1977 and my present of choice a Hornby 'OO' set with a GWR Pannier tank, 4 miscellaneous wagons and an oval of track. I've still got them and they are still in working order the only thing i've replaced is the old battery operated transformer for an electric one. Needless to say i've added more track since then and more rolling stock but still run the Pannier with it's original wagons.
  8. A huge tract of that land which I believe was council owned on the corner was taken up by the roundabout (sponsored by Swann-Morton) and road widening and the gardens / public land was at one stage used for off road parking by local residents (illegally). Swann-Morton's boundary is further back and closer to the boundary wall of the old cottages. Land that was derelict and abandoned for over 20 years to my knowledge, maybe longer. The car park helps in keeping cars off the roads where no doubt local residents would have probably complained in the past. Swann-Morton have created jobs by using that land for a factory unit as well as placing planting areas wherever possible. ---------- Post added 26-09-2013 at 18:03 ---------- If you come in at the bottom of any company you will always I suppose be paid less than someone who has been there a few years. It's not slave labour by a long chalk and you I believe that in some cases wages are reviewed after a trial period of working.
  9. Which bit of public land was it then ? ---------- Post added 26-09-2013 at 13:09 ---------- And your proof of that ? They do pay above the NMW and applications forms can be picked up in reception. ---------- Post added 26-09-2013 at 13:10 ---------- The healthcare scheme is no longer BUPA and is a much better scheme than now then many schemes available in the high street. Don't forget the pension scheme too.
  10. At 5pm it was causing even slower than usual traffic way past the Derek Dooley Way and on up the Parkway. It looked like their were 4 cars involved and one had come straight across the carriage way and hit another head on at the bottom of Flora Street outside the double glazing showroom.
  11. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work for the company, we work hard and reap the benefits as employees. 81 years young this year and still going strong and not resting on our laurels. As for the tract of land mentioned above I can only assume that is the piece of land that lay derelict and overgrown for many years on Owlerton Green, that was used for dogs to foul, occasionally rubbish to be dumped and also on occasion illicit transactions taking place behind the bushes. A company that is proud of it's local area and of it's heritage that yes does give it's employees 10 weeks holiday a year, a subsidised canteen, a healthcare scheme and many more priviliges. Many people are all too quick to knock a business, but in this day and age Swann-Morton are a company that the people of this city should rightly be proud of, especially in the current climate. So before you go knocking it, get the facts, know the facts and think about what Swann-Morton does for the local employment picture and local businesses it supports in it's production.
  12. Mr Potts and his eye popping stare, he was one not to mess with and another teacher that used to strike fear was the raised voice of Mr Licorice !
  13. When Home Bargains first opened in Hillsborough I decided to pay a visit having never seen the place before. What a culture shock it was, the stuff was cheap, some branded, some unbranded, tat and non-tat so I could sense at what type of person the store was aimed at. The main shock was walking down one aisle and seeing people taking things off shelves opening them taking a swig from a bottle of cola and putting back on the shelf, the same was done with a pack of biscuits by someone else. I also saw someone taking sun tan lotion from the shelf, opening the bottle and then applying the lotion to themselves before replacing the bottle and walking out of the store. Needless to say I have not and probably will not visit said store again. Is this really what society has come to, like a pack dogs roaming the plains for any free and tasty morsel that they can scavenge ?
  14. If it was on Broad Street then the councils website is incorrect as i read it. Areas where we propose to introduce camera enforcement Boston Street bus gate Broad Street bus lane Charter Row bus lane Ecclesall Road bus lanes South Lane bus gate Spital Hill bus lane If cyclists want to use the road instead of the many cycle lanes then let them, but if they get in my way i'll knock em' off. Also a red light in this country normally means stop behind the white line on the road and not keep cycling past the line and onwards.
  15. I do remember Nasim Raja, I think, she was tall for her age if it was her. The corkscrew was pretty new back then and we got a certificate to say that we had ridden on it. It is a life time away but they were good days.
  16. Blimey I remember that incident and am trying to rack my brain as to who she was.... we had to all get out of the pool too if I remember rightly.
  17. I did a YTS straight from school in the 80's, a one year course £26.25 per week and to be honest it was great fun. I worked in the wages office of a firm down on Corporation Street with a day release to Impulse Technical Services learning computers. Met some great people and contacts, the firm kept me on, stayed there for 6 years and moved on to another place when my boss moved on and not stopped working since. It's not done me too bad to be honest.
  18. So the police have the right to move anyone on from just pitching a tent in a public place.
  19. And the award for the thread with the worst puns goes to..... Just curious what does the law state about pitching a tent somewhere like that, is it covered by local bylaws ?
  20. Oh god yes, Pete Flynn... on the occasions I was allowed inside during the colder days I used to sit on a stool at the end of the bar and was told that if a policeman came in to say... "i'm going upstairs now Uncle Pete" and go behind the bar and up the staircase inbetween the two bars.
  21. On Pinstone Street as you looked at it from the left.... a paper shop (became GT News), Bradleys Records, a jeans shop and then Radio Rentals on the corner is how I remember it. I used to go to my dads place of work which was in St Pauls Chambers above straight from school in the late 70's early 80's. I bought my first ever 7 inch record from that branch on Pinstone Street, still got it today, they also used to sell a lot of ex-jukebox stock with the middles stamped out and you would get a plastic middle that would pop out every now and then. Happy vinyl days.
