  1. Hello each, The story about Meadowhall being a prison is an urban myth and came about because the design is of a central hub with arms radiating out from it, technically architects call this a 'Pan optican' and the Star ran a story about the layout during its construction. Pan optican was a popular layout in the 19thC for building prisons, as one warder could, by walking around the hub, see down each arm to make sure the inmates were not getting up to no good. look it up on wiki. 2. Hello each, A name to conjure with The Big Gun ! I went past it on the bus on an almost daily basis once going then coming from work, it seemed to sum the town up at that time; ‘The Big ‘Un. The first time I went in was as now legal apprentice drinker, just after I turned 18 making it late 1968 with some lads from work, at about 6 pm ready for mi first ‘black un’. “A couple int’ gun then inter town, Ye Ha” . It stood on a corner of ?? St and frontage on the Wicker, on the right hand side going into town. It seemed very posh to me; a sprung back rest with red velvet covering, wood panelling on the walls, cubicles with tables and chairs in in them and a carpet. It also sold food; Liver, chips, mushrooms and tom’s for approx. 2/- all heroic size portions, but that came later. As we stood there that first time all in our muck, and working togs signs to all that we were maeisters, a Bar maid just stood there looking at us in in disbelief (this was also my first remembered withering look from an adult female, melted mi bone marra’). “Bloody Hell! Get round t’ back, what do you think this is a circus? No not that way” as we tried to go through the connecting door, “OUT, OUT! OUT t’ way ya cumin.” Then to a mate who foolishly said something along the lines of “ I’ ve got money, I’ve earned mi money and al spend where I like”. (Even today I’m sat chringing writing this). “OUT! OUT! Bloody Hell! I’ve got money. Any body thinks they can come in ‘ere nowadays , OUT! ar’ ya fresh outa Wadsley? OUT!” All this to the amusement for several hard types, the kind who when in a pub you avoided making eye contact with if you knew what was best for you, sat in a corner cubical who began calling; “Out Out are ya fresh outa Wadsley” later one of the lads said he only let ‘em get away with it because it was bad form to tackle a woman. So we went out into street had a brief confab; did we slink off defeated or stood to our manhood and go in for a pint? Foolishness got the better of us so we went into the back door. The landlord(?) reading a paper on the bar glanced up then looked back down, totally ignored by everybody in there, talk about tumble weed rolling past. Then the same bar maid appeared “Right lads, Five pints is it”? Eee lads, I’ll tell ya, I’ve had to sling a team of tramps outa Best Side, what’s world comin to eh”? Then I realised she had shoulders and biceps like a weight lifter, those old siphon pumps made a woman out of her. Went in many times after but did I (we) know who was boss - yep we did.
  3. No, your wrong you don’t know that I “mean well” as you are not telepathic also I don’t want you to think you are doing me a favour by allowing me to act in a manner I see fit. As you have pointed out we all have a life story I unconditionally shared aspects of mine, including what I had done to try and alleviate its continuing toxic effects, with others, in what I consider was a positive and sensitive manner. Whether they read or don’t read, consider it or not, its up to my peers as to what they do next. I don’t pretend or want to have responsibility for their living of their lives. What I do care about is that you waded into me in a, firstly, unrequested response making false allegations about me and then continued in a hostile, rude and aggressive manner. Guided by your previous comments, I have no interest in what your religious beliefs are, or how you came by them. That information may be of interest between you and your local parish priest, Buddhist Centre, evangelical church, other faith group, emotional or medical professional but not to me. I will not however attempt to harangue you into silence regarding them. Neither will I be drawn into a debate as to the existence or not of an abstract entity, just not interested. As you have brought the circumstance of bullying and your being bullied into these postings I will recommend visiting the bullyonline.org (new and old websites) or look up The Tim Fields Foundation web pages. 'Hurt By Abuse' is a website (to which I have no ties or obligations) providing links to web addresses of where and how abused adults can access help and support via several different organisations in the UK, Europe and North America. As stated a very worthy group of people doing a thankless task. KTF
  4. People do care, please don't knock those who try to provide it. 'Hurt By Abuse' is a webpage for an organisation staffed by Roman Catholics, funded by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Sheffield Hallam Diocese Visit their site as well as providing how to access help and support via several different organisations it also carries a review of the film Spotlight. A very worthy group of people doing a thankless task - recommended. KTF
  5. Hello each, Off topic? Only for DLS college? Soapbox? What a strange response. Writing as a friend do you think you need to look in the mirror? I thought the topic was about about physical, emotional abuse and possible sexual grooming that had occurred at a catholic teaching establishment over a generational time scale, that's what my reading of many of the posts voluntery contributed to this thread indicates. What I wrote was in part to signal to any survivors reading this thread - letting them know that they are not alone, that this survivor is not ashamed of their being attacked by adults and it also known a strategy known as 'Identification' used to establish shared experience and aid a survivor. It is my life experience and it happened to me in a catholic teaching establishment in S.Y. and I'm prepared to stand before a judge in a Court of Law and state my case regarding my case under oath - that's not Soapboxin' mate. As I said 'Hurt By Abuse' is a webpage for an organisation staffed by Roman Catholics, funded by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Sheffield Hallam Diocese (which covers much of the geographic area of S.Y.) and they spend most of their time being over worked in response to the demand from Roman Catholic schools in S.Y.. Visit their site, then collect funds for a very worthy group of people doing a thankless task. KTF
  6. Hello each, sorry I'm late coming to this topic. I never attended DLS but had the full Monty S.Y. Catholic upbringing, being eldest of 9, like many my Dad was an economic migrant; pit then steel worker. Christening of course, Confession; as my soul was dammed for eternity at age 6/7, First Communion all in white and terrified after being told that Jesus would burn my tongue out if I had been 'bad' between that morning and yesterday’s Confession, Conformation; 'the Bishop will ask you a question and if you can’t answer it you will be refused, have to leave the Church and school (all my mates) and be dammed'. RC infants Monday morning Mass register; "what mass did you go to? Did anybody see her/him there"? If not, wham! Corporal punishment present at all and every turn, despite my having a speech defect from early years, I was as a teenager at secondary made to stand on a desk and read aloud to much teacher led laughter and on several occasions caned for 'wilful stuttering'. "I see it as part of my religious and teaching duties to toughen you up for life" said he and he didn't stint himself on that. I saw contemporaries vomiting when called out to the front by him. Little girls (always little as in tiny) having the backs of their (bare) legs whipped with rubber hosepipe taken from a science lab' Bunsen burner for talking in line. All in the name of Catholic schooling, if I recall precious little learning took place; power and control yes, learning no. So for me RC schooling was not a; ‘hard knocks fairly given’ by people who really, really loved me, wonderland. So I can't identify with those from Rotherham and district (rest of SY) posters to this forum who had similar experiences but it never affected them as they were too tough, yeh right. Ask your selves would you today let a teacher treat one of your children or grandchildren as above? If not, why not, if it was so beneficial to you? Their actions destroyed and continue to destroy my life. In wider SY There was a RC school in Rawmarsh, Swinton, Dearne Valley area who had a teacher put up in court and found guilty for his violent behaviour; I remember reading about it in the Star this in the early 1960's. There was also the scandal of a Nun taking an RC school to a Tribunal, held in Sheffield, where the frequent drunkenness of several senior members of staff while on duty was made public and widely reported, again in the Star. In later life I went onto gain several level 4 and 5 academic qualifications, working in academia then the criminal justice system. I have while trying to keep my life together vis extensive, audited, study and supervised training learned that the grooming process leading to sexual abuse has Emotional and Physical aspects deployed over a period of time to ensure that the process will be successful. Importantly for this topic that abusive sexual gratification can be obtained not only via bodily penetration or intimate touching but more so from physical and emotional violence. Sheffield Hallam Diocese has a website page called "Harmed by Abuse" with contact details for a very nice lady. If need be give it a try. Unfortunately she is on her own, in more ways than one, but very helpful to me when I (post Saville) sent into S.Y. Police a thirty page letter outlining my school days experiences and got a D.S. who questioned my mental fitness for ‘carrying baggage for fifty years’ before humorously saying what I had faced and “was not upto coping with was ‘a strict Catholic disciplinarian’, who obviously had good and bad days” (comments accepted today as being used by apologists for abusers). However, before his (the DS) bursting out laughing he did say that what I had provided was a lengthy list of instances of what were even then termed Common Assault and as such were punishable by law. Then the CSE scandal broke in Rotherham and for me it all ended there. KTF
  7. Hello there Biggsy, in the late 1980's I was working on the site of a disused steelworks which would quickly become a large shopping experience, when I went to a wedding. Socialisng with tu'ther side one asked me where, do you work so I told him and he said its been in the Star that the muck s unstable that true, at which I said, No you should see all the iron thats going into it to firm it up. Said tu'ther un, have they found the Retort House yet? Whats that sez I? Its where they used to make their own Acetylene and store it in 2 large pits, brick lined about 25x15 ft deep and wide with Calcium Carbide warehouse next to it sez e. Heard nowt sez I . Mentioned said conversation to the surveyor on Sunday morning, come Monday afternoon, Tuesday the place was swarming with very concerned important people very unused to wearing boots and hard hats carrying plans, maps, photo's between themselves laying out tapes. Later lots of lorries dumped large loads of limestone near the flyover which quickly vanished into the ground. Surveyor said remind to never again ask you what you did at the weekend.
  8. Thanks all for the good advice . phil
  9. Hello, Recently been given an Aspire 5630. It looks the bees knees but, it fires up OK then nothing, nothing works in any of the utilities works, no software can be opened, internet cannot be accessed. any advice please? philip
  10. Hello Biggsy, Thanks. I'll bet there are lots of industrial usage 19thC tunnels under the town, they had the machines, the know how and pride to drill them. All the local pits were joined up during the 192/30's so that the miners could escape and coal still be got out if the Headgear was bombed, the steel works could have done a similar thing. Brightside Lane and Attercliffe Common are/were dead straight and flat, ideal for cut and shut excavations same way as the London Tube was laid. The Tram Depot was at the Rotherham end of the 'cliffe, where the cables went up into the air then all the way into Sheff'. The Depot later became a bus depot its gateway and boundary wall were still standing until a few years ago on the edge of present Meadowhall. I remember it had an offset layout and I think that the patch of green on the corner of Weedon Street and 'Cliffe is whats left of the site. Phil
  11. Hello, There is a tunnel from Kelham Island up to Moorhead. Its was dug out to route the electric cables from Sheffield Tramways power station there up to Moorhead. My old mate Terry Trince was working for Carter Horsley and they had to go quite a way in from the Kelham Island end to do some remedial shoring up work putting in steel beams e.t.c. , he said it stank and was full of rats. Also very deep so as to miss the sewers and such. The route would take it past the old Firestation and Snig Hill cop shop.
  12. Hello, Nolan Sisters? Never had 'em down as political thinkers They were never away from Kimberworth Park WMC in the seventies, great act filled a 500 seater Concert Hall every time.
  13. i'm Not able to read minds but you try to do so, possibly food for thought would have been a better phrase from me. You introduced pigenholing so not guilty there. but what about the Nolan Priciples? Would you abide by them or expect your elected politican to abide by them? ---------- Post added 23-08-2015 at 20:17 ---------- Hello, I have very mixed feelings about our Eric but he went and put himself in harms way when tramping, living in squalor and dicing with death. He does say that he realises that his salvation is only a street away so he's not like the poseur in the Pulp song Common People. re 'prophetic redolence' = future smells, stench of rot, appreciate the use of the language. Thanks
  14. Hello, Questions to ask politicos of any party, do they know about the Nolan Principles, if not why should I vote for you? If you know do you agree with Nolan or have reservations? will you ethically tie themselves to employ the Nolan Principles in your political career? ? The Nolan Principles The Seven Principles of Public Life were defined by the Committee for Standards in Public Life . They are: • Selflessness Holders of public office should act solely in terms of the public interest. They should not do so in order to gain financial or other benefits for themselves, their family or their friends. • Integrity Holders of public office should not place themselves under any financial or other obligation to outside individuals or organisations that might seek to influence them in the performance of their official duties. • Objectivity In carrying out public business, including making public appointments, awarding contracts, or recommending individuals for rewards and benefits, holders of public office should make choices on merit. • Accountability Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to their office. • Openness Holders of public office should be as open as possible about all the decisions and actions that they take. They should give reasons for their decisions and restrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands it. • Honesty Holders of public office have a duty to declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest. • Leadership Holders of public office should promote and support these principles by leadership and example.
  15. Er No. Pointing out that it appears that the techniques of propaganda warfare that were once the preserve of the military and spooks in times of national struggle and by totalitarian regimes to psychologically enslave their populations are now being used against the people of the UK by a political elite is noble. for alternatives to your thoughts See The Nolan Principles The Seven Principles of Public Life were defined by the Committee for Standards in Public Life .
