General Post Office, Fitzalan Square- its future?
Wardsbitter replied to green pea's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Sheff 71 Thanks for this.It shows just what a magnificant building the GPO is and also a question on how this building can have been so abused- lying in the middle of the city as it does. Its been worse treated than the old Town Hall, also gutted. The safeguarding of these buildings is something that the council has a responsibility for over and above the owners. -

Do we need one? The GPO is surely an iconic Sheffield building and its current state can't be a good image for the city -

So is there a way to flag up public concern about the GPO? Local media ain't doing it. -

Park Hill is beginning to look interesting but there is a lack of infrastructure round the place[stores/shops/pubs].The need to keep the city centre accessible hence the furore over the bridge link. I still think we would have been better demolishing to be honest but we have got it now. -

Nice mixture of exhaust fumes and illicit substances sometimes wafts across the square, perhaps a place to linger during lunchtimes perhaps? But if the GPO goes there remains only the cleaned up White Buildings, King Ted and his pigeon wire and the Bell. Good Night Gentle Readers-Til The Morrow, Wards Bitter -

Someone mentioned the Old CourtHouse/Town Hall. A coat of paint on the chipshop and the Police Offices taken over by Howells. The Cannon will never be a pub again. The whole area is an eyesore. -

Joker You aren't joking. The city has a gold route up Howard St direct to the heart of the city which avoids the bad impression that you get proceeding up Flat St.Sheffield has got a lot to do.The Planners have a right job on to match the success of the heart of the city. -

Its getting quite worrying. Many of the windows of the GPO have been left open or smashed for ages so pigeons are getting in.Its impossible to secure it so many of the pipes have been thieved, There seems to be little work going on in regard of the building or positive plans for it . The Star has done a two page piece on T J Hughes but on the conservation issues facing the city centre and suburbs- nothing. -

Can you think of any other building we have lost that would be as great a body blow to the conservation minded amongst us as the GPO? -

Having observed the state of the General Post Office in Fitzalan Square for some time I have seen no improvement in its overall condition. Supposing it got to a state where it was proposed it was demolished do you think there would be a public outcry? -
Meade House is named after Bill Meade. I know little about him apart from the fact that he was the father of Alf Meade, one of our veteran Labour Councillors.

WallBuilder, I am not sure what you mean by access group. The Wadsley and Loxley Commoners? Birch seems to overrunning the place and I find myself bemused by the argument that its being persecuted. Will the cows be kept safe? That seems to be an important point. Wards Bitter

Anyone know anything about Wardsend Cemetery?
Wardsbitter replied to tango2's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Not a war memorial but a memorial to NCO's and privates who died in the Hillsborough Barracks in the 1860's. The reason why it was erected remains obscure unless there was some sort of epidemic. I would have thought the Barracks would have clean drinking water supplies so cholera can be ruled out I suspect.Looks like natural causes as there is nothing on the obelisk to indicate disease. -
certainly threads all over the show on this one. Still its the holiday season, the media in overdrive and ,God Help Us, football is back. Blame me ,I've joined in as well. Think I'll go back into me cave.Dangerous things forums. But then look at Caesar in the Capital.
