Hi, the buzzing sound is likely to be from the solenoid on the gas valve. As you have a repair contract with them I would advise contacting British gas to arrange for one of their engineers to visit to check the gas valve. If it is the solenoid buzzing it shouldn't cause any danger but a new valve still shouldn't be buzzing so they may well replace it.

It will almost certainly be the ball valve in the domestic tank which is passing slightly(this would explain why there was water built up during the night but the level dropped once your husband was up/ running taps etc).
