Who played Jungle Jim and/or Tarzan in the late40's/50's?
Jossman replied to billhaley's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Lex Barker and Gordon Scott. Johnny Sheffield was "Boy". Tarzan actors depend on the era you are searching for. -
Looking for information on Private W J Lupton
Jossman replied to gracie's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Interesting, we had an Albert Lupton an ex Royal Marine from WWII who taught PT at Owler Lane Sec; Int; in 1956. I wonder if he could have been related. I imagine he would be in his late 80's if he is still with us. -
British Rail goods yard fire, 1966
Jossman replied to pitsmorian's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
My mate from the Navy was in the Fire Brigade, he attended the National Carriers disaster and was very badly burned. He has never worked since. He still lives in Sheffield. -

How did public houses run during the First World War?
Jossman replied to Texas's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I remember in the early 50's seeing young lads carrying trays of beer in the mornings. This was on Penistone Road and was for the furnace-men and hammer drivers. Imagine this in todays PC and H&S world. -
My apologies Janner and a sad story regarding the Tyne. We had similar on the Lincoln in the Fez '64. Our CERA jumped over the side and was never seen again.

Obviously you don't like Ex MAA's Janner.

Sorry, I don't want to hijack this thread to Royal Navy, but I thought Janner would like pictures of his "Old Ships". Thanks for your forbearance. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/rba93/hmsunicornmpl805.jpg

Here you go Janner. From one old Matelot to another. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/rba93/tyne.jpg

What's on your "must do" list when you visit Sheffield
Jossman replied to StJohn's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Going up to Sheffield on the 17th July. On the 19th I will be in the Shakespeare at Hillsboro' enjoying a few pints with my old school pals. Then the usual things. -
Notre Dame High School in the 50s
Jossman replied to GOLDEN OLDIE's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
My apoligies, it was De La Salle where my mates went. Both Hillsboro' lads. Not being RC, I'm not up with the schools. -
Notre Dame High School in the 50s
Jossman replied to GOLDEN OLDIE's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Two of my mates attended Notre Dame in the 50's. Kevin Meehan later to join the Royal Navy and Jimmy Sellars later to become a Metallurgist. Do you know them>> -
"Roger And Out" at the Frog & Parrot
Jossman replied to CHAIRBOY's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Hi Roger, This is Pete Swann. You were my scoutmaster many moons ago up until I joined the Navy at 15. You knew my sister Anne. I called on you a few times at the "Pig" after I left the RN. Good to know you are still around. I have many fond memories of you. Keep well. -
Any one go to Owler Lane Intermediate school
Jossman replied to ALZYMER's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I am up there myself on Thursday, 17th July, for a long weekend. I am meeting some schoolpals from Hillsboro' Infants circa 1950. Looks like the Shakespeare at Hillsboro Corner will be taking a bashing on the Saturday Lunch. I may have chance to see Pat but my schedule is pretty full. We'll have to see. Good to see your meetings are progressing. -
Does anyone in Hillsborough remember Walter?
Jossman replied to Blacksheep's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Back in the early 50's I knew Walter as did my Mum who nursed him at Middlewood Hosp. We used to talk in the "Old Mans Hut" in Hillsboro' Park. I used to give him neckties in exchange for "Bits" out of his bag. On joining the Navy I used to bring him Duty Free ciggies when I was on leave. My Mum is now 89 and remembers him well. Walt is a much loved character of Hillsboro' and it has been a priviledge to know such a gentle man. -
Just tried to open your tangrammedia link and got an immediate warning from Macaphee site advice that warned to proceed no further as your link is a Phisher. You may wish to check it.

Jossman replied to ALZYMER's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
So pleased to hear you had another good get together. Seems all the hard work paid off. I have spoken recently to Pat on the phone and she is thrilled to bits. Maybe one day I will be able to get up to Sheffield to see Pat and have a lunch with you all, until then, good luck. Pete. -
Trying to trace old regimental badge
Jossman replied to RosyRat's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Is this the badge?? The spindle is a gun barrel. The star above indicated a 3rd class Artisan, maybe yours has no star which would indicate a 4th class Artisan. Hope this has helped. -
Trying to trace old regimental badge
Jossman replied to RosyRat's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Rosyrat. I can tell you with great certainty that the badge is that of "Artisan" in the Royal Navy. It was worn on the right, upper arm of action working dress. The badge and branch finished around 1960 to be replaced by "Mechanician". I was a Master at Arms in the Navy as per my avatar of a crown and laurel. -
Jaqueline campbell- are you on SF and did you contact me?

Jossman replied to ALZYMER's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Have spoken to Pat and she told me all about your small reunions, I hope you have a lovely time. On a personal note I have just made contact with a girl from my year who was my girlfriend until I joined the Navy. It has been brilliant to talk with her on't 'tinternet, so we have all had a result. Happy days. -
How many Expats would move back to Sheffield
Jossman replied to sandie's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Everybody looks back with great fondness to the city of their birth, but unfortunately progress takes over and sometimes not for the better. Sheffield is no longer the city I looked forward to coming home to when I was in the Navy, but, I always like to re-visit and then leave with great disappointment. Sheffield will always move on but happily not with me in it. I will always be proud to be "Made in Sheffield", but sadly there are much nicer places in the UK to spend the rest of your days.
