  1. I might be wrong, but I think it was the Human League in the days when they used to stand behind plastic screens so that the punks couldn't spit at them. Got Dave Greenfield's autograph on a fag packet.
  2. X52 fast service to Handsworth. Went down the Parkway from Pond Street.
  3. I remember going to the Moscow State Circus at Belle Vue possibly 1970. It was a trip organised by the Sheffield Star. I remember it being pretty spectacular and not much like other circuses I'd ever seen,
  4. I remember seeing the Stranglers and getting the keyboard players autograph on a pack of Embassy No 10s. I think the support band were the Human League in their early days and they were playing behind plastic screens because the punks would chuck beer & gob on them. I also saw the Pretenders and I think Siouxsie and the Banshees there. I even played there at one of the Battle of the Bands nights. Can't remember who won, but we came last.
  5. don't know if this is any good: http://www.djhistory.com/interviews/dj-parrot
  6. I played in a band and we had a practice room on Shalesmoor and would often go there after dropping band gear back off after a gig. I remember the food being good and a reasonable price.
  7. I went to the infants (started 1965), then the juniors in Basegreen and finally back to the comp beside the infants so less of a walk after the hike to the juniors. A few names I remember are Infants: Miss Beale, Juniors: Mr Murton (Head), Miss Sandbrook, Mr Simpkins(?), Comp: Mr Hurst -English, Miss Davis(?) -RE?. There are others that I remember were decent teachers but can't remember their names. My mum also worked as a 'dinner lady' (one that looked after the kids rather than cooked) in the infants for 20+ years. Both the juniors and the comp are now housing estates and have been for a while but I think the infants might still be there as part of Sheffield Adult Education. However, with the state of Adult Ed and no funding I wouldn't be surprised if it is also now housing. I remember the air raid shelters at the comp on the playing fields and in my first year they recorded the George Best football tv programme there. It was great having famous football players hanging around. Had some great times and still in contact with some from school.
  8. I don't know for sure but I doubt that it was a listed building back in the late 60s. You could more or less do what you wanted to any building back then.
  9. The old building on Commercial Street that is now a Chinese Restaurant used to be the gas company building and as a kid I use to sit on the 95 bus in Commercial Street and I seem to remember that this building had an outside lift - the walls were obviously glass as you could see into the lift. I remember it at night and it was lit up. Does anybody else remember this lift or is it my memory playing tricks on me? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_United_Gas_Light_Company_Offices)
  10. My grandad worked there, not sure for how long, and probably left about 1970. He was Arnold Goodison and I think my gran also worked for a short time Dorothy or Dolly. I'm not sure what they did but I think Arnold was possibly on the main gate or clock in room. I still have the tankard he was given when he retired. I've also got some cutlery somewhere.
  11. Thanks very much for the info. I'll take a look next time I'm in Sheffield.
  12. I was recently looking at a pictorial history book of Sheffield and I saw the Jubilee Monument that was on Fargate and the Crimean Monument that was on Union St and South St. I don't think either of them are still there. So my questions are: Were they moved anywhere else? Why were they removed (or destroyed)? Does anyone know anything about them? Also for anyone interested there's a great website of Sheffield's public art (I found this from another message on this site so thanks to whoever posted it first. I'm just trying to spread the word on how good it is). http://public-art.shu.ac.uk/sheffield/thumb1.html
  13. My partner used to drive across to manchester every day for work and early one morning about 12 years ago she was in the area of the reported sightings (but we only discovered this after the event) and there was suddenly massive repeated banging on the underside of the car. She stopped immediately thinking there was something wrong. She got out and looked underneath, checked the wheels, looked inthe engine and then down the road thinking she had run over something. There was absoloutely nothing wrong and nothing at all in the road. Aboout six months after this we were watching tv and there was a programme on with two coppers talking about something strange on the Woodhead Pass and my partner said to me 'that's where I was when I heard the banging'. Also of interest maybe for the original poster is Strange South Yorkshire by David Clarke.
  14. I remember my dad bringing cracklin home on a Friday from Friedrich's. It was bliss and also the inner fat of the cracklin. Surprised both of us are still alive. Does anyone know if the shop still exists?
  15. George Best did a football TV programme (The Best in Football) at Freceheville Comp around 1971/72. He was there for a few weeks along with a number of other footballers but can't remember who they were.
