  1. Of course there was a sign at Townend but this is just a continuation of the border from the Shirebrook. Check any old maps, it's plain to see.
  2. The border was the 'Shirebrook' which runs between Lister Crescent and Seagrave Crescent.
  3. You are more than welcome mate. How the ell you remembered that I was the lad on the bike god knows, but yes that was probably me! I had more time off school than at it due to chronic asthma. hence the bike riding which strangely seemed to help. What didn't help was the folks who reckoned I was wagging off, but they'll all be pushing daisies now. My latter years at Bents green open air school worked wonders. I never did find my mate Rab, he had a tough time in life., Nor South African Chris, what a character he was!! I'm sure we must have bumped into each other in Hopkinsons chippy at times, he had a son who used to stand alone, directly in front of the loudspeakers at the Saturday morning Top Rank disco, never spoke to anyone! Keep kicking.
  4. Some names there I also remember, John Kerrigan, Dennis, Charlie. I left the year you started. Wonderful, simple days.
  5. Very sad news about Olivia, RIP. Does anyone recall seeing her at High Storrs school in 1973?
  6. My mate Ray was the DJ there.
  7. Still searching for old school mate Robert. We attended Bents green school in the early 70s so he would be around 65 now. He lived at Gleadless townend then but may have moved to Heeley. He had a younger brother Mark and sister Lesley. When he left school he worked for a number of years at PCL components on Arundel gate. Anyone know of him?
  8. It would have been a recording on schools TV.
  9. We rushed from The Lion to the Old Arra at 10.30 for the extra half hour, so I assume it was always in Yorkshire.
  10. Desperately sorry to hear this mate. I wish you all the best 😔.
  11. .......for the moon landing? As an 11 year old I was at Bents Green school watching it on the school telly, a great big metal contraption on long legs with a surprisingly small b&w screen. Also remember seeing the 'moon rocks' at Abbeydale industrial hamlet.
  12. Linley lane. Can remember 'helping' the police to wash their cars at the police house as a toddler.
  13. Always sad when this happens. I searched for someone recently only to discover she had died years ago at just 25. As you say, gutted.
  14. There is an obituary for a Fred Kent on google. Died last year in Grenoside.
  15. If that's five ways at Owler bar, It would have been Fannys, always a good night and pie and peas thrown in!
  16. Realise this is a very old thread but would anyone remember Greg's surname?
  17. I was in a band in Sheffield in the 70s, we used part of Camels 'The snow goose' as the intro to our set. Saw them live a couple of times, really good band.
  18. Some cracking songs in that top 20, Happy days. Think I've got a 'Top of the pops' album with almost the same listings!
  19. Dorothy Vernon died in 2014.
  20. Oh yes, the Christmas parties, er 'good humour'.......more like 'wink wink', especially on the back staircase 🤣🤣. They were wonderful days, Walsh's was probably the most 'Grace bros' of them all, strict but fair. I worked on the TV dept, can't believe the amount of money we used to take looking back. TV's are the same price now as they were then, so the majority were on the 'never never'. There was a period when we were selling over thirty a day, big money in those days. The shop really used to go to town at Christmas, I loved it. I left Sheffield years ago, believe most of the stores are sadly gone now.
  21. Merry Christmas all. This time of year always reminds me of the old department stores, I worked at Walsh's in the seventies and Christmas was always a great time. The stores were bustling with shoppers, the staff dressed up, mince pies on the departments. Although there was competition between the stores it was always a friendly rivalry, It's a knockout competition at the city hall between ourselves, Coles, Cockaynes and Roberts, (which we won!) and after work pile into the Mulberry tavern or across to the Claymore or perhaps Brown Bear. Sadly the internet has spelled the end for most stores, and the friendships which were made in them.
  22. Took your life in your hands stepping out the front door 🤣
