  1. Food and unhealthy drinks are shoved in everyone's faces all day long. You can hardly go into a bookshop nowadays without there being a cafe selling 400 calorie creamachinos 'and why not add a slice of cake?' Waiting for mealtimes to eat and just putting up with being hungry until then seems to be a thing of the past.
  2. Thanks folks I'll have a look at the suggestions later!
  3. Is the tip still accessible does anyone know? I checked the website and it doesn't mention any issues but I'm sure I read somewhere that it would be closed.
  4. I have tomato plants that have become huge and produced lots of tomatoes - problem is, most of them are still totally green. Only a couple have ever ripened? Is it normal to take many weeks, or has something gone wrong?
  5. Just thought I'd post an update on this: I found an old hoe in the garden, and spent quite a few nights going round chopping slugs in half! Also, I bought some nematoad worms from Amazon. You just mix them with water and spray all around. EXTREMELY successful, slug numbers reduced dramatically very quickly. I left the plants in my greenhouse until they were a bit bigger, and then planted them out in copper rings as an extra defence. This time, basically no slug damage at all. The courgette plants have grown rapidly and are quickly producing more lovely courgettes than I know what to do with! Very pleased, thank you all for your advice!
  6. Yeah I think learner drivers can (or soon) go on motorways now, but I don't know if it's compulsory. I'll have to look it up. I grew up in central Liverpool and passed my test without ever having been on anything like a rural road! I think you should have had to have completed X number of hours training in a variety of situations, ideally.
  7. I don't think the driving age should be raised. By 18 you're an adult and should be able to live independently and that includes being able to get around and get to work, which might not always be possible by public transport. Starting at 17 makes sense to give people the chance to learn and pass their test by age 18. I do however think there should be better driver training, for example mandatory training on rural roads/motorways, and more restrictions on new drivers such as limitations on the number of young passengers you can carry. I basically don't believe a 17 year old who has just passed their test should be allowed to put four 16 year old friends in their car and go tooling off on rural roads that they've potentially had no training on, depending where they live. It's madness. BUT they absolutely should be able to take themselves to work or wherever else they need to be.
  8. I found having an unused credit card negatively affected my score. Getting rid improved it. Although I had had it for a long while.
  9. I think it'd be extremely sad if clothes/art/design/architecture/whatever couldn't be inspired by the full variety of human culture.
  10. Is it a recent thing - could it be the light waking her up? Is it possible to blackout the room if so?
  11. I would have thought so, your first period won't happen without hormonal changes happening in the first place surely?
  12. I use Abbey as they have several branches and their own 24 hour service out of Barnsley, which we have had to use once for an emergency and also use for other things like buying wormers on a weekend, very handy. The Retired Greyhounds use them so they always have hounds in and are hound experienced which is also important to us for our lurcher. Obviously less useful if you're not based oop north
  13. I bought some plants from B and Q several weeks ago and they seem to be growing well in my greenhouse, that might be an option? I'm sure there are better places to buy from as well like a proper garden centre!
  14. Thanks for that I'll remember to do that. I've just moved them in to larger pots still in the greenhouse for the mo and they seem to be doing well so far!
  15. I'd be very surprised, it's very popular and busy. I hope it doesn't anyway!!
  16. That's brilliant advice thank you! I'll have a look at those copper rings, I don't mind spending a bit, especially as that's something that can be re-used over and over
  17. I started off a load of courgette and squash plants in the house and then planted them out, as it said on the packet to do that in May.... only for every one of them to be killed by slugs eating through the stems! Luckily I kept some back in the greenhouse so I can have another try. My question is, should I just keep them in the greenhouse for longer until they're a lot bigger? Will the stems eventually be too thick for slugs to kill them in one go?? Or, should I do something else? I'm new to growing veg and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! I've got some pepper and tomato plants in my greenhouse too. I also have some pea and bean seeds - should I plant these straight out? There's already an A-frame in place, but if they go straight out will they be instantly killed by slugs?
  18. I have quite a loud exhaust because I got sick of the maintenance costs and difficulty of obtaining mild steel exhaust bits for an old car. It worked out cheaper to have a stainless system made up that's louder than normal but much longer lasting.
  19. Don't forget that an interview is a two way street, and it's your opportunity to ask them questions. Do some research about the college and the course in advance and think of some related questions to ask at the end of the interview. This will show that you're serious and have done your homework, for example you could say something like 'I see that there's an opportunity to do XYZ as part of the course, can you tell me more about that'. It might also be good to ask about extra curricular activities and opportunities too, to show you're keen to get involved.
  20. I tried this and it took forever to scan everything and it said they didn't want loads of them (for example wanting some out of a box set but not others seemingly at random), and the ones they did want they were offering naff all for. More effort than it's worth!
  21. Thanks for the replies folks and for the recommendations which I'll be following up. I know a few people have mentioned reasons why they might not want the work, and I appreciate those totally, but as barleycorn says my issue is why not just tell us that? There's just no need to pretend you're going to call back or come round or quote, just say you don't want it and we can both not waste any more of our time.
  22. Depends on the house and the rental agreement if rented or covenant if owned I would have thought? My last (owned) house specifically forbade keeping farm animals.
  23. Moved house recently and there's some rewiring work that needs doing, new consumer unit etc, but we cannot get an electrician for love nor money. Tried several and they either don't answer the phone or promise to call back and never do or promise to come and look and never turn up. The last one we tried (personally recommended by our new neighbours, so we know he's been good in the past) went so far as to turn up and see what needed doing, promised to get back to us with a quote...... and was never heard from again. Doesn't return our calls/voicemails. What's going on? Is there a glut of electrical work and they don't need any more? Do electricians not want tricky work in older properties?
  24. Stream/download from Google Play Music for me, we have a family subscription. Use it on a variety of devices - car (via Android Auto), phone, BT speakers, Echo, PC/laptop. Nice to have to same interface and for it to remember the albums and types of playlists I like across all devices. Easy to discover new and different music too. I've not used physical media or been in a shop like HMV in years to be honest, far too clunky.
  25. Oh! haha yes ---------- Post added 06-04-2018 at 16:49 ---------- It's also due to the increasing numbers of retired people compared to workers - smaller families and a longer life expectancy. Something has to give somewhere.
