  1. Hi Chantelle how lovely Thank you for replying I would love to see you and Ginny again I will send a private message if I can remember how and give you my details love to you all
  2. I am trying to find friends Gillian Townshend who married Pete Lomas and Virginia Marsden who married John Gresham. I was a bridesmaid for both of them and wondered if they still have any wedding photos. A long shot I know. I believe they have re married but I don't know their current surnames. can anyone help? Thanks.
  3. I also went to a grammar school. At the time of the changes I felt that the grammar schools should have stayed as they were complete with the 11 plus even though it went on how you did on the day. Whether it was fair or not I cannot say as I was told by my headmaster that I wouldn't pass. Incidentally most of my friends went to a secondary modern and were far more intelligent than I was and went on to more successful careers. So is it the educational system which determines the outcome or the individual?
  4. hi I went to Holland with SUT in 1966. 1st trip abroad with a friend courtesy of a £28 gift. That £28 gave me 3 holidays that year. Those were the days. it was a good year to go as all the boys talked to us as we came from Sheffield and of course we had just won the world cup and they had watched the football from the Wednesday ground. We went to the Alkmaar cheese market and to Zuider Zee where people still dressed in the old Dutch costumes. strange but I never went anywhere again until the 90's
  5. Every children's Christmas party at Crookes working men's club it was the Nolans. We watched them grow up through the years.
  6. Hi number 14 was after the off license coming down toward the main Rd also Mrs Amy Shaw was my grandma from the 1959 directory. granddad had died in 1947
  7. We used to go down Chapel Walk to the café every Saturday to see the groups. We asked each group where they were playing that night before we made a decision who to see. Once decided we would go to C & A to buy our outfit. We got to know some of the lads really well and if you arrived early enough to the venue they used to get us in free if we carried one of the drums or a guitar into the venue.
  8. Hi my grandma and family come from number 14 Olivet Rd. When grandma died my cousins stayed in the house until it was demolished. They finished up living at Hollinsend. As children we used to go to grandma's on Christmas eve and go around carol singing to the neighbours while aunties and uncles exchanged their presents for us. Happy memories.
  9. My first holiday was in 1966 - a very good year. Myself and two friends went to Bridlington at Easter. My dad drove us Friday from work and fetched us back Monday. We nearly drowned in the harbour as the boat trip we went on was hit by a huge wave and started to keel over. Fortunately it righted itself and we were safe but wet through. Later on in the year one friend and myself went on the SUT coach trip to Holland. It was just after the world cup so we had a whale of a time talking to the Dutch boys who of course had heard of the Sheffield Wednesday ground. As I said a very good year.
  10. hi this is a total longshot to try and solve the remaining mystery in my family tree. here goes. my grandma said her cousin went down on the Titanic she was a young lady and was possibly a member of the Salvation Army. she would have to be linked to either the Bower or Thompson family tree to be a cousin of grandma's or related by marriage to those names. does anyone out there have anyone in their family tree who might fit the description? many thanks if you can help
  11. Hi I do remember the locked doors - as if that would stop us mixing - we always found a way. We used to wait for the boys at the bus stop but it was the one not in view of the school as Miss Furtado watched. Unlike you I had a good experience at school and although I was glad to leave I remember it with fondness. sorry I don't remember a Ruth Thompson. However, I do remember Jonny Worrall and Tony Heap who were the heartthrobs at the time.
  12. Hi yes Denis was Sandra's brother. I think he was about 3 years older than Sandra. They lived on Stannington View near the cemetery gates. ---------- Post added 18-11-2014 at 16:39 ---------- thank you for this. I had a feeling it was Miss Clements from all the references to her throughout the thread. the head teacher at the time I am assuming it was Mr Peck said that I would never pass my 11 plus as he didn't rate the school I had been to before. I proved him wrong and went to High Storrs
  13. I went to Lydgate lane only for 1 year. 1957/58. I remember a teacher standing in front of a blackboard and teaching us Jerusalem. Anyone know who she could have been. I also remember attending a festival of some sort in a field. we had to do country dancing and Scottish dancing. does anyone else remember this? On my first day I was introduced to a girl called Sandra Lumb and we stayed friends for years. Any memories?
