  4. Two other names from Mowbray Street were John Mosley and Peter Green. John left and ran a repair shop in Darnal and Peter had a shop in Swallownest selling car parts. John sadly died a few years ago, Peter is retired and keeps his hand in with CCTV work and repairing vintage radios. The other guy I remember was Eric Bland, team leader for Decca, he had one arm, but his metal replacement arm was great when soldering as it had an attached pair of pliers.
  5. I seem to remember it being called the bridge of thighs, as if you looked up when travelling under it, due to it being all glass sided, you could see the ladies thighs. Of cause I never did look up as I was far to busy watching the road!!! Must have been built late 60’s.
  6. Not sure that this helps but here goes. From UK Motorhomes.net Can I sleep in my camper when it's parked on the road or in a lay-by? It's very difficult to give a straightforward answer, the problem is that many bits of legislation may apply, including the Caravan Sites & Control of Development Act, and recent legislation covering gypsies and travellers. As a motorhome or campervan is classed in law as a 'caravan', sleeping in it may constitute 'camping'. Our interpretation of the law is that you cannot 'camp' on land in England & Wales (the law may be different in Scotland and N. Ireland) without the permission of the land owner. As far as the highway is concerned (this includes lay-bys) the land owner is normally the local authority. However, whether you are moved on or not will depend on the attitude of the local authority or the local police. Our opinion (and it is only an opinion) is that you are unlikely to be moved on if: The vehicle is not causing an obstruction (but remember that there is no 'right' to park any vehicle on the road); there is no specific local by-law prohibiting overnight parking or sleeping in vehicles; you are not in the same place for more than a day or two. Having said that, we don't encourage overnight parking other than at official sites (sometimes known as 'wild camping'), however we know that many people prefer it. Anyone considering it must be aware of the risks involved, and must have a responsible attitude to the local environment and other users of the location. As the old saying goes: 'Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs'. We know of several locations formerly used for overnight parking, that have been lost to all motorhome users because of the irresponsible actions of a minority. For what it's worth, during our 28 years of ownership of campers and motorhomes we have never been moved on from any lay-by or roadside stopping place in the UK - but we only use them as an overnight stop on a long journey. From Leicester CC web site. With reference to overnight parking on the highway, motor-homes left on the highway shall be parked in the manner outlined above. In answer to your enquiry about overnight sleeping, the practice of camping, cooking and sleeping is not permitted in any of the council-owned car parks in Leicestershire. Whilst there are no such prohibitions relating to the use of on-street parking places, the police, local authorities and landowners do have powers to take action where any trespassers are camping on land unlawfully. This includes the public highway. Under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, the Police and Local Authorities have powers to enforce the removal of unauthorised encampments. Section 77 of the Act states that enforcement action may be taken against persons residing in a vehicle on any land forming part of the highway, with penalties ranging from seizure of the vehicle, to fines or even arrest. Motor-home owners should be mindful of this when considering overnight parking arrangements.

  13. Yes I remember it well. From the top of Donnington Road turn right and just before the entrance to the park on the left were two large gate posts. Through those and up the drive was the farm. The old gentleman and his wife ran the milk round and when I knew them c1955 they delivered Express Milk delivered by the dairy to the farm. My father also had his milk delivered to the farm as well so each morning we collected the days supply ready for delivery. Later a riding school was based there and every Saturday and Sunday horses used to be lead down the drive and around the area my sister was one of the stable girls. I think the farm was demolished when the flats were built.
  14. I can remember my Dad just before going to bed fetching the coal shovel and sticking it into the living room fire lifting the burning coals out and taking them upstairs to the fireplace in the bedroom. Once there they would heat the room before they went up to bed. Now that’s what I call recycling (or very dangerous)
  15. When I worked at Wigfalls Mobray St workshop we had a gentleman called Stan. Stan was the original laid back guy. Stan worked in the radio repair shop but was moved upstairs to the TV department. My boss wrote a little ditty about this and I can still remember it 50 years later. At last he’s gone and oh what glee They need our Stan to mend TV’s. But will he work not on your Nelly You’ll find our Stan sat watching telly. Sad or what.
  16. Barnards started as two toy shops one in Woodhouse and the one at Manor Top. Not sure which they had first. They lived on Woodhouse Road up a short lane between two houses. The sweet shop was originally a sarsaparilla bar run by an old couple who lived on Ridgehill Avenue. When they sold up Barnards purchased it and converted it to the sweet shop. The hairdressers up stairs came later. When Barnards closed it was taken over by Alan Thorpe. Next to Barnards was a bakers. At the other end of the row of shops was a butchers run by an old lady (well she was when I knew her) and her son. The family had a chalet at Humberston fitties. It’s still there walked past it the other day.
  17. Remember Sellers Salve from the Wicker Herbal stores. Used for boils and other skin complaints. We always had a tub in the first aid box.
  18. We used to play on the slag heap (c1955) the tunnel was bricked up when Mansfield Road was made in to a dual carriageway. The slag was still burning and if you scraped off the surface it would smoke and burn. Just further down Mansfield Road was a small electrical shop, strange character very scruffy as I remember. This was in the days when you could get ions and kettles repaired.
