If you take time to read any of the RSPB 's reports, the decline of songbirds is though to be not greatly affected by the increase in Magpies, sure they will take a few chicks but so will quite a few of our much loved birds. The decline in songbirds is mainly due to loss of food and habitat in which our farming friends must take a major load of the responsibility.They have systematically destroyed hedges, killed off insects with poisons, planted envoronmaentally unsympathetic things like rape , linseed ect , filled in ponds all whilst collecting their subsidies, and now they can even claim subsidies for replanting the hedgerows they decimated in the first place. They can even claim money foy leaving a patch of land unploughed in a field in the that a skylark or lapwing [birds they alone put on the endangered list] might care to nest in it. Farmers dontcha just love 'em. Rant over Did you know Sheffield & Nottingham are the Magpie capitals of England. .

Thanks to Red Robbo for taking the time to reply , but it is still a mystery as to what has happened to the large number of rabbits on the Ripon Street fields and the area behind Alltools on Staniforth Road. Any ideas??

I can't believe that the council would spend money in trying to kill what are not really vermin or doing any harm in what is an industrial area. Can anyone from the council shed any light on this?

Up to about 2 years ago anyone wishing to claim land off of the council had to prove unrestricted use of the land for twelve years. I believe that this law has been modified but I don't know to what extent. The answer is to create enough of a furore over this if you don't like what is happening and if the council are aware they can take steps to prevent them having any title to it. As one previous contributor said let Mick Rooney know, he does seem to do quite a good job for the area. Just out of interest where is this????

Anyone out there remember Mick Taylor, Monty he would have left about 1969, his mate was black lad Carl Stevens [Friday] . He was a bit of a well known character. In inter school fights between Hulfield and Central Tech . He was with a gang of Hurlfield lads and the saw the tech lads at the Punchbowl he shouted charge and ran towards them but no one followed him and he ran on his own waving a milk crate. He got a right battering, It was a shame really cos most of the lads he charged were his mates that he knocked around with.He was out with them that night. Unfortunately he died about 5 years ago

I have two pals who rent nice houses to students and the state that the properties have been absolutley disgusting doors hanging off, rubbish thrown down the cellar broken fittings,,bills left unpaid. In future what I would do as a tennant is what one of them is now doing as a landlord and that is go through the house with him and take a video, Sounds a bit extreme but would settle any diputes that may arise. If you feel that you are in the right the small claims court will only cost about £30.00 up to a£500.00.,you can walk in an complete the summons there and then and when your landlord gets it he'll probably sort it pretty sharpish. No one in business wants CCJ's.

Don't if I 'm the only one but what always used to p*** me of about the early days of Radio Hallam was that it proffessed to be such a local treasure but most of the presenters couldn't even be bothered to learn the correct pronunciation of the local areas. They would be always coming out withe things like the Why- born estate, Bow Cheef, Green Hill, Darn Hall. Don't know if its still the same what I've heard of it still sounds like patronising crap.
