  1. You can take your bike on a train subject to the by-laws of the TOC - the restrictions are increasing because of increasing use. Sheffield, Blackpool and Manchester trams were operating 25 years ago. No tram system (above plus Croydon, Birmingham and Nottingham) in the UK allows bikes on trams. Bikes are allowed on the Docklands(light rail) off peak. Nexus (heavy rail infrastructure and trains) does allow one bike per carriage on a trial on some of its network. The trial will decide the design of next fleet of trains. The bikes will not be carried in tunnels or over the bridge. The data (including passenger comfort)collected will influence future policy and design. GMIT, Cycles on Trams Working Group on the 18 June 2010 issued a 37 page a report on why they and the operator objected to the introduction of trams on trains GMIT also: 15th January 2010. The Implications of the Carriage of Bicycles on Trams 8 pages Will link when I can to the .pdf Forgot about the Edinburgh tram-

  3. There are "general restriction" on taking items onto the tram- first and foremost physical and personal safety. One thing the tram does very well is to promote mobility amongst those who have difficulty. This is policy and legal requirement for all forms of transport. Bikes do not fall into this category. The design of our current trams mean that the steps restrict the movement through the tram and that there is competition for space and movement in the doorway area- vestibule. The added space needed for "bikes" increases this competition". Any injury or damage to property by the action or Stagecoach can be recovered through their insurance or through civil court. Surely you are not suggesting that there should be more limitations on people with disabilities or need to shop or take their children out? Mobility chairs have restriction already. People with other disabilities might need a space in the vestibule. Prams contain people- and are restricted. Travel on trams and trains has doubled in 20 years. 20 years ago there was guards vans with luggage space which could be used by bikes. On a few tourist and urban routes there were outright bans or a limited number or booking requirements. Slam doors and narrow corridors were a big consideration. The increase passenger, the removal of guards vans and the increased popularity of cycling has created a much greater demand which cannot be met, hence the huge increase in denial of bike access on trains and trams. A Google search will reveal these arguments in detail
  4. Polio can be spread through the community by someone who shows no or very few symptoms. A non vaccinated traveller from the UK could pick it up overseas and return, show no symptoms and spread it around back here. Ignoring procedure, deliberate reactivation, historical lost collections and human stupidity can conspire to re-introduce the disease.
  5. I sympathise with with our Derbyshire cousins. Those that drive over from Sheffield and elsewhere often act like sheep when it comes to parking. We use the road between Sheffield and Disley every Sunday. On certain Sundays nobody parks on the Ladybower/Bamford Clearway on other Sundays you have to straddle the marked median for a considerable distances. But rarely is it half and half i.e. one driver parks others follow. The same behaviour occurs between between Wynnats Pass and Rushop Edge were drivers now block the footpaths and damage road edge and grass verges.
  6. I can only think that your experience of suburban rail travel in London or other big cities with large networks is limited. Why would commuter rail systems make up problem as reasons to ban or severely limit the carriage of bicycles eg London commuter travel between 07:00 – 10:00 and 16:00 – 19:00 and many bans and limitation and advance booking required at other times. You ignored the rules on carrying luggage on Supertram now you are ignoring the rules on luggage on trains. The "unused" wheelchair area is for people to sit or stand or for walkers and other aids and prams. Having two bikes is also quite common solution to suburban cycle bans. There are no restraints for the bikes and staying with it is not going to help in an emergency. Holding on to a rail with one hand and the bike with the other will not stop the bike moving on a swaying tram. Physical injury (falling, tripping over, slipping, gashing etc.),property damage(clothing, bags, tram furniture etc.)are covered by Stagecoach insurance if. There is the additional and significant cost of insuring and modifying vehicles to carry bikes. Who pays? You payed for one space and occupy four. The velocity of getting through the doors might be the same possible on an empty tram but highly unlikely in reality. Reality is called "dwell time" which is the length of time at platform. This directly effects journey time and therefore the timetable. Dwell time will increase: The bike is longer and so will take more time to get through the door. Usually it will be one at bike at a time not two. A considerate cyclist would leave a bigger space between them and the person in front. The passenger behind would slow down to leave a bigger space to avoid potential physical injury or property damage. You have to slow down to take the required 90 degree turn. You will slow down everybody behind you as try to block the vestibule trying to arrange/position your bike. There is the criminal law and civil law aspect of the TramTrain as it operates on NR track. The TramTrain has a very rigid timetable which has to be adhered to If it is established that the evacuation time on the recent Moscow disaster, was far longer than planned due to behaviour associated with luggage there will be changes to all public transport rules and design restricting all types of "carry on" items.
  7. I am assuming that the first step of protecting yourself against unfair redundancy and getting the protection and free legal advice, would have been to have become a member of your trade association, professional association, union, guild etc., years ago. Those are my experiences and therefore the basis of my advice.
  8. 1 It is not an arterial road- at best a one way street. 2 In the same way as Fargate. 3 Roads are often segregated, cyclists need to have a bell.
  9. Sheffield trams and tram trains do not have adequate space or restraints to protect passengers from physical injury, dirt and damage to their property by bikes. Insurance claims would require Stagecoach to pass on this cost to all passengers. Operationally the tram timetable would have to slowed down because of the need to increase dwell times thus creating fewer and longer journeys, and more standing and congestion when there was none. Allowing bikes to be anywhere near the doors unrestrained would be a serious hazard and potentially fatal in an emergency evacuation. Netherthorpe Road? The conductor could be anywhere on the tram, the delays in finding the conductor would add further unpredictable delays. Solution is get two bikes, one for each end of the route, or get a Brompton + cover and you get to use buses and trains as well.
  10. Last mainline journey of Flying Scotsman. Due to the incidents of trespass on the line between Derby and Birmingham many trains were cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes. Tens of thousands of connections missed and tens of thousands of pounds+ to be paid by taxpayers in compensation to mainline passengers from Cornwall to Edinburgh, Sheffield to Southampton etc. Flying Scotsman operators have repeatedly been told that costs incurred will be transferred to them by Network Rail. The operators of Flying Scotsman have pleaded with enthusiasts not to trespass and websites no to publish times and routes. Can we at least do this for Flying Scotsman journey for now, to prevent Network from allowing steam on mainline.
  11. Exactly the type of Trust I meant. Not expensive to arrange and easy to administer. Can be very trick/impossible to change.
  12. Very often people seek to find a cause when none is known and interpret events from hearsay or information peddled by solicitors and discredited medics. Its natural to do so and a natural reaction to the shock. In the 90s more and more parents (like us) realized that there were changes in child development after MMR . The MMR at the time was given at the age when the greatest development in speech took place. So often the child had already developed some speech. We both saw this What in fact was shown to be happening was a coincidence in timing of the MMR and the development of speech and social interaction. The solution you suggest won't work and are easily proved wrong. Its not something specific in MMR or in neither anything to do with overwhelming te body, there are far more vaccines give more frequently and normally combined in up to 6 vaccines together , typically in the UK:. diphtheria tetanus; whooping cough (pertussis) polio Haemophilus influenzae type b,(pneumonia or meningitis) and hepatitis B Pneumococcal (PCV) vaccine Rotavirus vaccine MenB vaccine MenC vaccine, given as a single jab containing vaccines against meningitis C Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) Children's flu vaccine (annual) Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, second dose 4-in-1 pre-school booster, given as a single jab containing vaccines against: diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis) and polio HPV vaccine, which protects against cervical cancer 3-in-1 teenage booster, given as a single jab containing vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus and polio MenACWY vaccine, given as a single jab containing vaccines against meningitis A, C, W and Y MMR is first given at one There is no scientific process associated with Autism. Of the thousands of studies made, not one supports this view.
  13. Most of the world is not made up of " (t)he supermarket, the swimming baths, parks, play areas etc etc...". It should be totally acceptable for parents to know if any establishment which caters for a large concentration of children, permits regular attendance by non-immunized. This simple measure who remind parents who have not thought about it, forgotten or don't care to get the job done, leaving objectors to arrange for themselves what they do. It would also increase the herd immunity. Children should be offered immunization 11, 14 without parental permission and reminded 16 and 18.
  14. This is very confusing are you saying that there is a link between GM foods cause Autism? What evidence is their that Russia "... dont vaccinate their kids..."? I read "They dont vaccinate their kids, and children that devolp health problems will require pharmacutical help from the state"? as Non vaccinated "...children that devolp health problems will require pharmacutical help from the state"? Am I correct?
  15. What is the link between Autism and measles apart from a bent solicitor and forged research created by a discredited doctor? What is the link between "big pharmac(e)utical companies" and Autism? Why do criminals, fraudster, far right politicians, conspiracy theorist, fringe religion, quacks and fringe medicines knowingly harm our children to promote their cause. What are the experiment being done ? There are people who will be harmed by your dated guesswork.
  16. Whatever you do, do not do anything to jeopardise your current situation by taking time off etc. to give the firm to dismiss you. Do not rely on hearsay as every redundancy is different in the way it plays out. First contact you Union rep or local union rep to make sure that they are aware the firm is making people redundant. Make an appointment with the area Union rep. Do not under any circumstances speak to anybody, read any documentation without being provided without a copy, verbally agree or sign any documentation presented to you. Find you original contract, any promotions or changes in conditions, your P60s etc. and makes There are statutory rules and rules negotiated locally(workplace)with your Union.
  17. Dignitas? seriously? The amount you pay will depend on location, facilities and needs. Location is obviously your choice. Facilities are your choice even within a unit. If you need a bit of help then why not pay someone to do it at £10 an hour private arrangement at you home, £20 and up for a company. A home to retire to, just means renting or buying a managed or leasehold house or flat around £10 000+ a year. Sheltered accommodation is usually a more basic or smaller and might trigger a little bit of government help. Cost more as would Residential homes Residential Care homes between £500 a week and £1200 might trigger a little bit of government help . Nursing homes between £800 and £1500 a week and unlikely to be offered unless a Continuing Health Care plan To get any real money from the Government you have to have at least two very serious problems e.g . Blind + Dementia Selling your home ahead of when you need to saves on inheritance and what the government can take away from you. Creating a trust can enable a surviving partner or children protecting up to 50% of their inheritance. Good idea to plan early. At this stage do the work yourself, independent advice is not always impartial except for a solicitor and setting up a Trust advice.
  18. Will the number of transactions the solicitor is payed for increase or decrease?
  19. A 60" TV in a box does not have sharp and oily surfaces to injure or damage and anyway if the a staff member decides that a new 60" tele in a box, " could be reasonably expected to cause or does cause obstruction, inconvenience or danger to any person"(Bylaws 9.1b). Any authorized person can then insist(9.2) on, moving it a safe place and/or on making the item safe or having it removed(9.3). So if your view is similar to that of an authorized person, the 60" TV, would not be carried. (Supertram by-laws ) 9. Bicycles and luggage 9.1 No person shall cause or permit to be brought onto, or permit to remain upon any vehicle or any tram stop: a) any bicycle or other wheeled vehicle (save for wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams) unless authorised by the Conditions of Carriage; b) any luggage or other article which by reason of its nature could be reasonably expected to cause or does cause obstruction, inconvenience or danger to any person (whether a passenger on the system or not) or damage to any property (including but not limited to the system).
  20. Multimodal has a several definition but it is less associated with the public transport and more with of items freight using different carriers. Intermodal has several definitions but is more associated with passenger transport when transfers between modes of transport occur than with freight. Needs to be a very clever boy. The idea of putting a bicycle inside a city tram is fraught with problems particularly at rush hours. Probably the costs of being sued by the public being their greatest worry. Many UK railways limit the number (usually 2 or 3) and times (total rush hour bans and compulsory reservation) when bikes can be carried and they can use criminal and civil law to enforce these rules. Buses and trams do not have such powers.
  21. The trams and tram/trains are not designed to carry bikes. There are no storage areas or restraints. There is no protection from damage to the person or damage to clothes and property by bicycles. There is no insurance to cover these. The design means the bikes will block emergency access and disabled access. Journey times particularly at rush hour would be extended. No ability to control the number of bikes being allowed on particularly during the rush hour. There are two obvious alternatives and still use the tram: Get a bike for both ends of the route. Get a Brompton with case. Can be used on buses as well.
  22. To the candles makers and tallow merchants , the renderer of carcasses and glue makers, the laundries and solicitors etc. I will readily sign a statement that on penalty of death that I will not engage in any of these activities. I won't sign the petition because it is so unfair on solicitors. Until the proposers can show me that no harm will come to solicitors both financially and from under-work, I will withhold my signiture. They could also get a team down from Scotland to show how Welsh and English solicitors could survive without leasehold work.
  23. The thread is about smoking next to eaters not the ability of the human race to destroy the planet through its actions. It is most certainly not a moan. Belittling the impact of an activity that kills 1.5 million people a year plays straight into the hands of those who profit. Calling people moaners and hypocrites for protecting their health and that of their families, friends and colleagues is ridiculous. It is not moaning or hypocritical to turn back the image smoking being normal, created less than a hundred years ago by mass advertising on a scale never seen before. Claiming the hypocrisy of the tiny majority of steak eaters are somehow representative of the millions who have to, or choose to eat out is wrong. People are more likely nowadays to not want or have, or put with smoking near them. Why pick on steak eaters? Is the image of the steak eater an easy win? Or is it more difficult to explain the comparable harm related to the global and local effect to put produce a kilo of 'vegetable', energy, chemicals in the form of fertilizer, insecticides, habitat destruction, land destruction and the need to burn or rot down organic waste. The tons of airline fuel daily polluting the higher layers of atmosphere. The tons of fuel burnt in extra "tomato miles" on our roads.
  24. Eating out is a function and a necessity for most who eat out in this country. From the nursery, the school canteen, the college canteen, university residences, works canteen, office microwave, the lunchtime café, food hall, staffroom, residential property. etc., etc.. In ever increasing numbers in the big cities flats have inadequate facilities. The nature work you do often mean working away from home. I am very sure that the vast majority of this population, steak is not affordable or on the menu. Neither does the vast majority of people who go out to eat socially chose steak. Finally a steak eater can without any hint of hypocrisy protect their family and friends to protect them from diseases which kill 1.5 million a year.
