  1. In the 50 years of decline in this area, cars drove through the area without stopping. The 'rat runs' and shortcuts just added to the general air of decomposition. Speeding cars in narrow alleys and pavement parking is still a problem but gradually the area has improved, the surviving small manufacturers have been joined by beer, food and creative businesses which have been attracted by its popularity with people. Historic buildings and housing have been redeveloped with some new construction now its time for the roads alleys and footways to be renovated and reassigned. Of course access is required for all the businesses and their needs, keeping it as a "working" area is essential to the character of the area-but through routes are not needed as there are enough already. This country needs people to spend money in the new businesses that you find in Kelham /Shalesmoor. People need to be attracted to the area by its charm(?) and interest and not discouraged by cars using narrow lanes as rat runs and shortcuts and blocking footways. The area has huge potential, lets not get stuck in the past. The area prospered before cars- it does not need them to prosper again. "... hipsters, cyclists and and hikers !!" and other species of people spend money, cars don't.
  2. Many local shops that deal in phones and repairs have a phone number and instructions in their window and can arrange pickup/delivery for sales and repairs. They are only closed to "walk in" business and still function in all other respects. I recently did this and was offered a choice of new and second hand phones with transfer of number etc. They also picked up and returned a laptop that needed some attention. I am not aware of any breach of Covid rules. Support your local business!
  3. You would be "penalised" only by the evidence, some of which would be derived from the "black box" and some by the investigating officer at the scene and presented to the magistrates/jury. The question in my mind would be why the driver was unable to stop. The evidence would establish the factors and their influence on the events. A "black box" and camera would be a boon to anybody falsely accused or blamed, a great way of forcing the Government, Police and Councils to manage and fix roads. Finally as a reminder to drivers to expect the unexpected and to drive within their limits. and those of the environment they are in eg children on bikes in an estate.
  4. Eat them. The income can then be used to manage a healthy breeding herd and maintain their habitat.
  5. Announced in June 2020 the theme of the current World Economic Forum is "The Great Reset" There has been considerable internet activity concerning "Great Reset" with reported links with groups usually associated with "conspiracies", be careful!
  6. Sheffield History have this OS map is dated 1963.
  7. When I first introduced 'black box' into the thread I did not mean a limited device but something that brings together all the technologies currently used. PSV, HGV, company, hire, taxis, delivery vehicles, dogs cats, prisoners, computer, laptop, valuable items, mobile phone users etc already make use of devices that track and are capable measuring many things they do. We have the ability to control parking without wardens. We have the ability to control speeding offenders without radar or cameras. We have the ability to reduce theft and apprehend criminals. We have the ability to prevent the untaxed, untested, unlicensed and uninsured from being on the roads.
  8. Or a return to what personal transport is about getting from A to B cheaply, efficiently and safely without endangering others or their environment.
  9. The average driver will say they are a better than average driver- which is irrational. What most drivers are roundabout(sic) average, they make the average number of errors and and suffer an average number of unforeseen situation. The ability to react is affected by numerous factors but all are compounded by speed and mass(velocity momentum etc.) The average driver overestimate their driving skills, understand risk or understand consequences. When travelling abroad there are far more important things to do and consider than wanting to go fast, including making changes to the vehicle. Instead of limiters, tachographs/black boxes should be used in all vehicles which report to roadside receivers or mobile phone network. The black box could be used to pay for tolls/parking/parking fines etc
  10. You may well be correct. My interpretation was that the bus companies were responding to the Government statement on January 13th and reported by ROUTEONE that "Bus service levels in England during the current period of movement restrictions are expected by the Department for Transport (DfT) to be “noticeably lower than pre-lockdown,” DfT Director, Local Transport In a letter dated 13 January, Mr Fidler says that it is “vital that service levels and patterns reflect reduced patronage, serve the right destinations without encouraging unnecessary travel… and represent value for money.” " ...a polite way of telling the bus operators what he and the DfT want them to do.
  11. The re-nationalisation of the railways means that the franchise system has ended and the train operating companies(TOC) are running services on behalf of the Government through massive subsidies. Originally reported by the Telegraph "One in five train services could be cut to slash rail spending " on Dec 26 , each TOC has subsequently reduced its timetable. eg TPE services to Manchester are now every 2 hours during the day. The Covid-19 Bus Service Support Grant works by operators applying for money that the Government has given to the LTAs (local transport authorities with the specific requirement to keep rural and key worker services going). The total money available has been capped to £27 million per week for England - London, hence the reduction in services like in daytime frequency of the 52a.
  12. The 52 timetable issued by Stagecoach and appear on TSY are the same PDF. There is no difference between the 52a First timetable and the 52a timetable that appears on TSY.
  13. Received £135 refund today after making a claim for over payment of application fees to register a power of attorney. Claim a power of attorney refund from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2017 but you must claim your refund by 1 February 2021. Its all online and you do not need the original paperwork - https://www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund Its is the Government website and the money is returned to the account the fees were originally paid. This is the MoneySavingExpert article
  14. A few naked people in hill streams miles upstream from the water treatment woks is no risk compared to the threat posed by hundreds of dogs allowed by their owners into our drinking water reservoirs.
  15. The First mention that their 120 and 52a services are enhanced Saturday services. Stagecoach are also changing timetables . See links in post #1
  16. "Interest Rates. Why So Low?" Is your topic about the cost of higher education? Young people benefit massively from low interest rates and low inflation but they suffer from not being able to raise the capital for a mortgage deposit. The "Student Loan" has a negative impact on getting credit. As explained the "Student Loan" system is about making an income based contribution to their University costs. The vast majority will barely repay the capital borrowed let alone the interest before it is written off after 30 years.
  17. Money has never been cheaper. Small unsecured money borrowing has always been expensive because the businesses that lend money still have costs and profit to make and have to cover risks of default. Defaulters costs are not a problem if other borrowers are willing to pay such high interest rates. The Personal Loan market is riskier now, so if you are taking out a Personal Loan today you will be paying a premium to cover the default of others and the potential instability of the Pound. Your Student "Loans" interest rate figure is wrong does not reflect the real cost -which is far less. The Government predicts that 25% of students will pay off the "loan"-thus reducing the real interest considerably. In reality far fewer will pay the full amount and many will pay nothing. The "Student Loan" is not a loan on a debt as the debt is wiped out eventually-most will just contribute towards the cost of their own higher education. Repayments at a 9% rate only begin when a threshold is crossed (England-£27,295 from April 2021) A £30000 pa job would mean an annual payment of about £700 A £27000 pa job -nothing. (Repayments also depend on when you took the "loan").
  18. The aim of any Chancellor in any mixed economy in the world is a steadily growing economy with a strong currency , low inflation and low borrowing. Interest rates are used to speed up, slow down the economy, but not without the risk of inflation and unemployment. Successive UK Chancellors have instructed the Bank of England to control inflation- which has a vastly more damaging impact on you savings. During most of this time the Government has let the BofE do this with a great deal of independence. The Bank of England sets the interest rate and borrowers and lenders in the UK follow. Currently Government has far too many people, businesses and institutions wanting to lend it money as its a safe place. It does not need to attract investment so can pay less (interest) for it. Higher interest rates would end up as higher inflation and mass unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcy. At the moment the Government spending is cheap but investment in many business sectors is at an all time low. Denis Healy wrote highly illuminating and entertaining texts about the foolishness of all economic theories and attempts at control or manipulation.
  19. This morning I received 20+ emails relating to Wordpress. I deleted all of them. I then looked at our Website and found that content had gone and menu did not work. The website is fully paid up but we have not used it for 3+ months. The website is not critical but the name etc, is important. I am clueless regarding websites. We have done virus and malware checks on the computer used-nothing. What should my next move be?
  20. The Government has instructed public transport in England to reduce service levels on buses and trains. Accordingly First in South Yorkshire, nearly all buses will follow a Saturday service. First timetables here, Stagecoach are also changing timetables here. Train operators have/are/will change timetables. Tickets booked in advance will be honoured.
  21. To write a timetable many factors are taken into account. In your example a delayed Yellow tram would be further delayed if it gave precedence to a TramTrain which itself would become delayed by the increased number of passengers getting on and off. The Yellow tram being empty will catch up with the TramTrain . Assuming that both arrive at their timing point having used the "Slack" built into the timetable any further delays will mean that return journeys will be late and unless time can be made up the whole system begins to wobble. I do not know what financial penalties Stagecoach incur for causing delays by running late between Tinsley and Parkgate but it is substantial enough for Stagecoach to cancel TramTrains at short notice. Drivers at Middlewood do know that they must leave on time because of the effect a late departure can have on thousands of others. "Gate" or 'gatelines' on the railway are the point at which tickets are checked, sometimes these are physical barriers which are only open and closed for certain trains such as Waterloo, Blackpool North, St Pancras, Euston, Paddington etc, some stations like Leeds have "gatelines" which remain open to all ticket holders. Passengers will not be refunded at Leeds if they arrive less than 10 minutes at the 'gateline'. Similarly Piccadilly, Glasgow C , Birmingham NS etc at 10min+ dozens at 8min+ and all 5m+. We all have sympathy at airports for the unfortunate and those who make genuine errors. Those who deliberately push the at the limits and rules and think they are an exception and care little for the impact on others, get and deserve little respect, so in most cultures being punctual means being prepared ready to go/leave/start/meet/treat/collect...
  22. Not often you see three place names with celtic/brythonic /Welsh origins. Long lane- Long has its roots in "lôn" which just means road. Roscoe - has its roots in "rhos coed" which means "moor wood". Rivelin- "rhyd felin" meaning ford (by the) mill. Nearby are: Malin Bridge (melin= mill) Don = fast moving river Racker Way (racker is a road leading down through the woods) etc,
  23. The Supertram timetable is now governed by the Tramtrain timetable which itself is governed by National train timetable which requires the arrival and departure of the Tramtrain at Parkgate, Rotherham Central through to Tinsley to the minute. A late running Supertram Middlewood to Meadowhall service could delay(or even cancel) a Tramtrain to Parkgate, this could cause cancellations of Supertram and Tramtrains and delays for the rest of the day. Railway train drivers (and guards/platform staff if present) should be focused on the safe despatch of a train. With trains up to ten minutes away from the "gate", not waiting for one late passenger can lead to a knock on effect on other trains and routes affecting thousands of passengers. Normal railway practice is that train doors are always closed, and after a safety checks, locked before departure. Then there is a despatch sequence (depends on train and location) after which the train can to leave.
  24. Some bus services are run on contract, particularly very early/late services on main routes and some rural services. If these are not running or are overly early/late direct complaints should be made to the authority and a copy made to the provider. In my experience the complaint was investigated and resolved to my satisfaction. On the other hand I would have no objection to an operator 'fixing' the frequency of a busy route by allowing early departures, curtailment or empty moves, so that everybody along that route benefits. At a bus terminus passengers arriving at departure times will cause the bus to depart late. Busy railways avoid this by closing and locking train doors up to a minute before departure, thus avoiding the need to restart the departure process.
  25. Every Labour leader has been subject to negative, paid for vilification by media owners who represent and act on behalf of... The Labour Party and its supporters must accept that. Leaders are too easy a target and the media will win every 'beauty contest' for the Tories. This is made easier if the leadership of the party provides the ammunition the form of mixed messages. Labour does not win an election with attractive leaders or popular policies, it wins when a tired, split and conceited Tory party upsets the electorate. Vitally important at that stage is that the Labour party has to have an electable leadership with policies that are not perceived as damaging or radical. With a sufficient majority and a united party, structural policies can be introduced that will improve the economic situation of the majority. The Tories greatest tactic has been the ability to persuade the majority of people that they are "well off" when clearly they are not and to be 'scared' that their limited assets will be taken off them by Labour. This group has been targeted and squeezed by unfair taxation in the form of VAT, NI, fuel, insurance, travel, etc providing the money for the accelerating profits and number of billionaires- yet still vote Tory. Why? History tells us repeatedly thatthe ideology of Benn, Foot or Corbyn does not win elections.
