  1. I hope you mean the people blindly defending him or making comments like this: (or just saying Labour's rubbish - or the like!) Because we're Sheffield, we always vote Labour (exept Hallam) so we expect handouts (Apologies - no offence meant ) and not people trying to understand the reasons behind the spin on this one! I think that's totally understandable and some great comments - Blackbeard - very interesting stuff!
  2. Interesting article - I think the important thing is being straightforward with people about the real reasons for decisions - Mr Clegg is giving me the impression he thinks we are a bit stupid in the North!
  3. Interesting .. http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/mehdi-hasan/2010/07/nick-clegg-public-conservative
  4. No not really .. Liam Byrnes' letter, I was assuming, was a joke that is part of some Cabinet ritual - I would guess a lot of ministers leave handover notes in a similar vein - not great but that would be my guess. In that sense I wouldn't call it a soundbite, no ... Nick Clegg seems to me to say anything, regardless of the facts, and hopes that people hear it, don't consider it, and then believe it to be fact - I think it works as lots of people seem to believe his quotes even when they're not based on truth. I mean that he was asked direct questions and, instead of answering them properly, he reverted to the Liam Byrne letter quote which is a bit lame That's not an answer to a specifc question.
  5. Getting confusing! In my original post I meant that Nick Clegg had been asked specific questions about Forgemasters and had answered by referring right back to the letter left by Liam Byrne again - and I meant that I was tired of this soundbite excuse to everything ... Obviously as this story went on there were questions about the Andrew Cook letter - sorry if confusing ... I don't know if anyone watched the programme on BBC1 last night ..? I am not at all a 'blinkered Labourite' as some accusations on this thread - I just can't bear that some people are hoodwinked by soundbite politicians these days - and don't bother to check their facts - Nick Clegg's technique seems to rely on that! - Shout an empty soundbite and don't bother with the truth - once your inaccurate statement has stuck in people's minds, it's worked! He is a politician of our times!
  6. Sorry I couldn't put a link to The Star article as this wasn't available at the time I posted the comment I mean the endless references to the letter left by Liam Byrne when the Coalition took over - 'there's no money left' ..
  7. Reminds me of the George Bush classic: “I have opinions of my own - strong opinions - but I don't always agree with them”
  8. .. or do you think he was mounting a takeover bid for Forgemasters?
  9. It's ok, I think it was a crude joke by Liam Byrne - but I believe that's what it was .. It's interesting to me that the coalition govt wheels this line out at every opportunity instead of explaining their actions .. I'd just like to hear an answer to this, not the same old lines .... http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/jul/22/labour-tories-sheffield-forgemasters-sleaze-row
  10. I know I may be labouring this (for want of a better word)! but I think it's important http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=6523783#post6523783
  11. The Star: Forgemasters - I Stand By My Decision (not available yet on Star website but is on page 4) ... could I say in the most polite way possible - please could he drop the old chestnut about 'the letter' from Liam Byrne - it was a joke - a crude and inappropriate joke maybe - please leave it and don't insult us - my assumptiion was that this was a houses of parliament ritual of some kind as obviously no-one would leave that kind of note otherwise. Also - please could he drop the 'Labour writing blank cheques' line ..? Please tell us the full story on the reasons behind the decision including a response to fellow Sheffield MPs queries and leave the soundbites alone now .. Disappointing ...
  12. I know - what is wrong with everyone .. I feel that people are being brainwashed .. very worrying ..
  13. Aren't your figures April - June here and the Coalition only took over in May
  14. I'm sorry but I don't understand your comment. In what way is anyone saving the country by turning down a loan to one of our city's businesses that could have actually generated a huge amount of revenue in turn? My point is that this didn't make sense and I think we should know the real reasons behind it ... That isn't about spin Also - in what way do you feel the Coailtion govt is saving the country .. specifically? Genuinely interested .. are you sure you really know that that's happening? What specifically do you think they are doing to achieve that?
  15. This is getting more complex - Forgemasters .. http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/Pressure-for-inquiry-into-Forgemasters.6436067.jp A transparent Value For Money review would be interesting - I can't really understand what the problem would be with that if none of this is true (re influence of donor, etc)
