  1. Well good luck with that. Whether you agree with directives imposed to protect vulnerable children or not (and I think many are a little over the top). I have a feeling that your actions will not do you any favours, I really can't see you getting any support from the press on this issue.

Like it or not, a school is not a public place and as such any guidelines set out to you when you are allowed on the premises should be adhered to. If nothing else it is good manners to comply with the requests of your hosts. I suppose by wanting to go out of your way to annoy people this says a great deal about you. I think maybe you just crave the attention this will bring you.

Yeah, I also think that this guy is an attention seeker. That's fine, It's his choice. Be cool Goon, don't fuel him.

  2. Having read through the thread and the various links it would seem that this is the most likely reason:

Nail on the head max! Several years ago my daughter was in the National finals for cheer leading at the Manchester Arena. The whole family turned up to offer their support with cameras at the ready. The officials warned everyone not to take photo's as it was against the law, and if caught doing so, would have their cameras, phones etc. seized! About two weeks later, we received a sample photo of our daughter with her team mates at the Arena, available for purchase!!!....

  3. Without being there, the BMW 4x4 driver sounds in the wrong. Surprisingly :)

His vehicle would be far easier to reverse and I didn't know about the law regarding reversing buses, but it does make sense.

Yep! clearly in the wrong pem123. After eveyone on our side of the queue decided to mount the verge, he had a good quarter mile of reversing space! :hihi: His face was a picture though, as I passed him in his full arms folded glory. I think that he was beggining to realise that he looked a little bit silly!

  4. This doesn't surprise me, i drove down there this evening and whilst trying to drive through the narrow section of road outside City Schol (bearing in mind it was my right of way) an idiot came speeding up the other way, trying to get through at the the same time, flashing his lights and beeping his horn. Even though he was in the wrong, and taking into account there was nobody behind me he was so impatient that he couldn't even be bothered to wait 10 seconds till the road was clear.

Those bumps and road narrowings cause more problems than they solve.

Your'e right jaffacake! I have experienced this many times. Perhaps these folk think that they are more important than other road users.

I don't think that the bumps and road narrowings cause the problems, more the dumplin's that don't abide by them.

  5. I think we do learn, to a degree. On this continent at least we have avoided a repeat of any atrocities on this scale. What worries me is that as this retreats further and further back into history, a repeat becomes more likely. And it's worth remembering that one of the reasons the Nazis were so popular was because of their other policies, which were very populist and simple in nature; they appealed to a lot of people, and a lot of those people voted for them not imagining the horrors they would unleash.

Today's neo-Nazis are similar. They only talk about the populist issues of the day; immigration, housing, unemployment. This gets them some support. But you don't have to scratch the surface much to find the old murderous hatred underneath. But so far they are still fairly powerless, and let's hope it stays that way.

I'm glad they are using Schindler's List in schools. I saw it at the cinema, and gave out some anti-fascist leaflets afterwards, but to be honest I was still shaking with emotion and really just wanted to go home.

    What a wonderfull post. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

  6. Stubborn or wat!

But little know to others is that a bus driver isnt allowed to reverse his vehicle on a public highway without either a company officalm somebody who holds a current PCV license or a police office to watch him back, so the bus driver might have been waiting for one to arrive!

He couldn't have reversed if he had wanted to, there were about about ten cars up his butt! Honestly dink, you should have been there, it was a right giggle.:hihi: If I wasn't such an easy going character, it would have given me "road rage". :hihi:

  7. On my way home from work tonight, along Stradbrook Rd (around 6.00pm), I encountered what I thought was a major traffic accident! The traffic was backed up from one of those "down to one lane traffic calming areas". Eventually, (after about 15 minutes of waiting) the people at the head of the queue began to mount the grass verge and drive past the obstruction. I followed suit. On reaching the obstruction I could barely contain my laughter to find that it was a bus driver and a four wheel drive bmw at loggerheads as to who should give way!! Both of these stubborn fools were dealing with the situation by sitting there with their arms crossed and staring each other out. Surely the bus driver had a schedule to adhere to as the bmw driver had a home to go to..... did anyone else witness this? I'd be interested to know how long this dispute went on for.

  8. I went to Tapton and remember being set a homework by my English teacher at the time (year 8 - 13 years old) to watch Schindler's List...I must admit I fell asleep about 10 minutes in (no reflection on the film, I think I was very tired!!) and have no idea what it's about. If I remember rightly though it was black and white (?) and this didn't overly impress me at 13 years old!!

I strongly advise that you watch it now that you are older and wiser. The reasons for the black and white thing will soon become apparent. Well worth a watch Impecunious.

  9. try reading the book, Schindler's Ark. A much harder medium than film, but all the more worthwhile for it.

To be honest UnkleBob, the written word is usually my media of choice. However, on this topic, I have chosen to use film, as it cannot be misinterpreted by the imagination. Granted, Schindler's List is not devoid of Artistic licence, but original footage that I have viewed cannot be questioned. From the outset, the very title Schindler's Ark conjures up a slightly misleading account.

  10. Here's a sad case of road rage. Upon leaving Morrisons Catcliffe, I planned to go into the city centre, so went up onto the slip road of the Parkway... noticing a gap in the rather sticky traffic I pick up speed along this slip road to nip in.

Unfortunately the chap I plan to nip in front doesn't seem to like the idea of me doing this and speeds up, slowly closing the gap to an uncomfortable level. By which time I am committed and running out a narrowing slip road so I have to squeeze in, effectively cutting him up. My fault on some levels I guess.

To which said motorist seems to lose his rag, repeatedly flashing his lights and then following me down the entire length of the parkway, flashing his lights and zooming up my rear bumper the whole time. Getting a bit tired of this nonsense I figure if he continues to follow me I'll head to West Bar police station and see if he wants to reach a resolution there. Fortunately (unfortunately?) upon reaching the 40mph zone of the parkway passed Matalan another chap pulls in behind me (who also then gets a good flashing from the little road terrorist) as I was in the second lane at this point, and I lost him in traffic.

What would you do in this situation? What should you do? It did leave me a little shaken , angry and puzzled, I have to admit.

Easy! don't cut people up! Wait patiently in line until a courteous driver lets you in. There are plenty of us about, otherwise no one would be at home posting on SF by now would they?

If for any other reason, you get a mad flasher behind you, simply pull up, get out of your car and approach them.

Then you'll see how brave they are with their flashes.

If, however, the flasher turns out to be a double hard geezer, get back in your car and DRIVE LIKE THE WIND. :)

  11. All the people who have a problem with this issue, is basically because you live in a godless society.

As soon as religion is mentioned, everything just doesn't make sense.

zee1, I don’t think that you can call these people Godless without the facts, perhaps they may worship a different God than you. I think that most of them are just on the wind up and, judging by your reply, have managed to drag you down to their level. Don't bite zee1, keep "your" faith and live and let live. :)

  12. I think (for what it's worth!) that this thread has been started to stir up a debate that should not be entered into. There are many different cultures and religions in our City, like it or not, this is how it is. If Muslim's have achieved their right for their children to correctly practice their religion at school, then so be it. They are not demanding that other religions take part in their practices, are they!?. Live and let live is the key. I have a thread on the forum at the moment, that perfectly illustrates the dangers and consequences by breaking the fine line between discrimination and jest. I hope that the moderators of SF will not come down on me too hard for my post, if so I will retract. I am not here for conflict, just fairness. :)

  13. it was used in silverdale school back in the 90s not sure about now though, they also used the last episode of black adder goes forth as an example of the first world war, great stuff and it really sticks in your mind.

I was at King Ecgbert’s. I didn't take History as an option, so I'm not sure if this part of history would have been covered if I had. It certainly wasn't part of the general curriculum. I would be interested to know if it is now taught to all students at Eggies.

    .

  14. I think Schindlers List is one of the finest films I have ever seen and all children should watch it and discuss it at school.

I have always wanted to go to Auschwitz, and Birkanhau.Maybe next year.

As a typical lad from the 70's, I always thought Star Wars was the greatest film ever made! After growing up a little and seeing Schindler's List back in 94, I realised how wrong I was. I couldn't agree with you more nosy nellie.

  15. Birkenau was the main extermination site; the rest of Auschwitz was more like a prison to hold political prisoners and slave labourers, etc.

Probably more information than you can bear here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz-Birkenau#Auschwitz_II_.28Birkenau.29

I don't know what to say after reading that PeteM01. I do not possess the words to describe how it has made me feel. Perhaps everybody on this forum should take the time to read it, it would put a lot of petty arguments and name calling into perspective. We should all spread the word. Thank you for your most informative post.

  16. I've been fascinated since i went to visit Anne Frank's house as a child and always wanted to visit Auschwitz, think it is something everyone should do.

It wasn't how i imagined in terms of how people saw birds don't fly etc...i think if you were there alone it would feel like that but it's so busy! I didn't expect so many people visiting.

Auschwitz 1 is like visiting a museum but Birkanau gives you more of a feel for how it really was.

You leave with a feeling of disbelief and true horror.

Please forgive my ignorance. I have never heard of Birkanau, probably due to the lack of teaching when I was at school. What happened there? and why was your visit more upsetting than that of Auschwitz?

    Genuinely interested.

From what you have said, it would appear that Auschwitz is quite the tourist attraction. In some ways I feel this is good, but on the other hand I find it quite upsetting.

  17. that would be very nice...but when a forummer starts a simple thread on christmas lights in firth park and then others slate the area......or some one asks a question about an explosion in s5 and another posts blowin the scum up in that area.......it gets a bit tedious.....why cant people just be able to ask simple questions without getting people making stupid comments ????

I don' know the answer annb3811. Perhaps it's just boredom as you suggest. From a personal point of view, I put it down to immaturity. And that's fine, everybody goes through it, and hopefully emerge as a well rounded individual. :)
