  1. I came from the Cross when it was a decent hard working area. Not now. I do pitty those who can't get out for their kids sake. I left to get my lad in a decent school, but then our council had to mix things up a bit. Shipping all the crap no one else wants to our school.

So you have moved from the Cross to S10. What makes you any different from the chavs that you complain about? Dont they deserve the same chance that you have been given?

What was the turn of events that made the Cross crap? The "shipping" of children from different areas to schools happens to every part of the city, Dore included. Why is Dore still a "nice" place, But the Cross isn't?

  3. Anyone hear Jimmy Carr mention Sheffield last night?

He starts the show with a few statistics and the first was:

"Shefield has the most fillings and bad teeth, finally something to put on that welcome to Sheffield poster"

At least we got a mention :)

Which poster was he talking about?

Switch your web cams off posters! Jimmy is checking out your teeth. :suspect:

  4. Stop acting like a child.

Oh come on Cyclone, that is weak! what’s next? An attack on my grammar and spelling?

To be fair, you have tried to give me a bashing in previous threads! You should have realised by now, that I am not the sort of person to take unfounded trite laying down.

Perhaps I have been a little harsh on you in previous posts, but you reap what you sow.

You do make some valid points, but the way that you sometimes express them leaves something to be desired. I quite enjoy conversing with you, and there is nothing wrong with a good debate, but press the brake pedal on the arrogance, as it will only be met with the same response.

I am sorry for previously offending you, and hope that we can put this behind us, as I can guarantee that our paths will cross again.

    All the best. Viney :)

  5. Grenoside is only one exception. Burncross, Chapeltown, High Green, Ecclesfield, Deepcar, Stocksbridge, Worrall, Hillsborough, Outibridge, etc, etc.

Then there are the council estates in Dore, Lodge Moor, Totley, etc, etc.

Funnily enough those council estates are no different from the surrounding private housing, which does give truth to the lie that there is a north south divide. Maybe there is, but it isn't one of investment wealth or any other money measure. It is one of people.

If anyone is to be ashamed as stated by the OP, I'd suggest that some people need to sort themselves out and realise that it is up to them to make their places better.

Viney40, you're quite obviously a smart and articulate bloke but you seem to have a huge blind spot here.

There have been several flippant replies to my OP. There have been several intelligent replies. I tend not to contend the intelligent replies unless they have an underlying intent to cause argument.

Sometimes, a flippant reply has an undertone of intelligence. That is how (rightly or wrongly) I perceived your first reply. I admit to gently teasing you in order to qualify your views. No offence intended, that’s just my way.

After carefully weighing up the views of all contributors, I consider your view, and those that hold the same view, to be correct.

It is down to the people.

Thank you for your input. :)

  6. There is definately a North/South divide in Sheffield. The north side is situated to the north, whilst the south side is situated to the south. Might I hazzard a guess that the dividing line is the City Centre?

    Its just a directional issue.

Another "jump in" poster that has not read the OP, or the thread. Don't worry crookesey, you're not the first.

  7. I agree - I don't think the council is averse to ensuring all parks are equipped with sound, safe play environments or even skimp on investment - however, when things are continuously vandalised a burned for fun there's no wonder why investment is withdrawn.

Simple answer is down to education and social interaction between people in each locality. It's difficult to tar people with the same brush as there is such a diverse range of people within each. However, you could argue that people within the wealthiest southern districts of Sheffield are in fact better educated and as such bring their kids up in a environment where socially acceptable behaviour is of a higher standard, as largely are values.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen within other less affluent areas of Sheffield, but factors such as the environment around individuals i.e. schools or even walking down the street can influence the way we behave - especially younger people, and you can see vast differences between North & South Sheffield.

    I'm from North Sheffield BTW

Does this apply to Tony's council estate in Dore residents? Are these council estate resident's automatically offered a higher level of education because they live in Dore?

  8. In that case I misunderstood. I was under the impression that there is a geographical element to affluence in the city, with grenoside being an exception (hence me point it out). I realise that it's not actually North/South, doesn't the South West of the city contain the majority of council wards that are considered affluent? And the North West contain the majority that are considered deprived?

    Ward map here.

Crime map - correlates quite well, although it's a larger area and you need to find the boundaries of Sheffield yourself.

Page 10 of this PDF has a map showing 'Financial Exclusion', the East of the city is all red, the south and west, not red.

    Apology accepted.

  9. You seem to loose the thread of a conversation so easily.

See what you did, assumed that Tony was labelling everyone in the area, rather than just talking about a prevailing attitude.

    Then.

Tony never argued that all the people of the area were the same, which you clearly imply (in bold).

You also didn't bother to offer your own thoughts on why there is a divide, which you think there is (the point of the thread), but don't think is down to the people.

If it's ok with you, I'll get on with some plastering now. :)

Is that it? Is that the result of all your sleepless nights, trying to think of a way to discredit viney? Have I indulged you by replying to your previous posts, only to be confronted by an anticlimactic none point?

I should feel flattered by your fan mail, but feel nothing but disappointment.

All those years at Uni’, being encouraged by your science lecturer to enter into informed, reasonable debate, down the pan due to your leaning towards the arrogance of your youth. What a waste.

For your future reference, here is where you went wrong (plus a little free advice!):

Lose the user name. A cyclone is a force of nature that sweeps through an area causing massive damage very quickly, then moving on. You are a quick thinker and a quick typist. Unfortunately, you type quicker than you think! Slow it down a little. Think before you type. Maybe change your user name to “draught”

    (that’s advice).

“draft” is another word that is pronounced the same way as “draught”. It has a different meaning, but is still pertinent to my reply. If you draft your replies, you can check them before you commit yourself in haste.

You selected snippets of conversation from this thread (not the whole conversation/‘s), and pieced them together to suit your means. This is commonly known as “editing”.

Editing can be a very powerful tool in the hands of the adept. You are not proficient in editing therefore it is best that you don’t attempt it again (more advice).

Read the OP carefully before jumping in. Your reference to Grenoside being in the North, shows your complete ignorance of my metaphor! And finally, I asked for advice on my observations. Hence I did not make an uninformed statement. I only made statements after weighing up the information that had been presented.

  11. I hope so. Stick to your guns if the car owner wants support! We were treated with complete contempt over the damage done to our vehicles. And to add insult to injury, the same bus driver still uses our street when the council have banned them from doing so.

    I will Mathom :mad::thumbsup:.

You stated in your previous post that there was at least one witness to what happened on your road and there must have been more. Get everyone to come forward. If a bus still comes down your street after a council ban, You can't lose! Make 'em have it!!!

  12. They will get away with it because they only have to deny that this happened. Several cars on our street were damaged one day when a school bus driver (who shouldn't have been going up there anyway) allowed kids to hang out of the door and aim kicks at all the car mirrors. The bus company just denied it ever happened. This despite my neighbour's daughter who was on the bus saying how scared she'd been when the driver let these lads do this. All we got was abuse from the bus company.

They wouldn't be able to deny it if witnesses came forward.

  13. Yes, we are very lucky. Where we are we enjoy a better climate than Wellington. In fact, Wellington has a reputation for one of the worst climates in the country. I would say our winter is about on par with a Sheffield summer - baring to occasional heatwave of course. In winter, I could ski in the morning and play tennis in the afternoon, so yes, we are very lucky.

Dont you get fed up of searching for your ball in the snow?
