  1. Hi VickiT I've sent you a PM. Looking forward to hearing about our side of the Theakers!!
  2. Used to take our Grandma's dog for 'a walk round 't lump' - (the area of houses that had been built in a square shape) in the fifties and sixties - don't hear that phrase nowadays!
  3. Sorry! did get carried away with old memories. My Great Great Grandad John Maw Theaker and his siblings originally came to Sheffield in the 1800's from Belton (between Doncaster and Hull). He married Anne Burton and their children were Thomas Burton Theaker (our Great Grandad),Samuel,George Henry,John Maw,Clara,Kate,Frank William,Annie Elizabeth. Thomas married Mary Anne Firth and they had George, Thomas, John(Jack) and William (our Grandad) so if there are any Theakers out there that recognise any of those names....I would love to hear from them!!
  4. Hi Fareast Yes, there was a bomb site - right next to Grandad's house - which has now been knocked down to make way for block of flats! Saw a dead cat hanging from the fence at the back of the site, caught by it's collar - made a mental note never to put a collar on a cat! There was a wooden gate in the school wall next to the entrance to the "firm". He'd let us go through there where I think there was a large sports area covered in reddish shingle? The river runs by the side of it. Used to take Grandma's dog walking round the "lump" - the area of houses next to Sawdon rd and StalkerLees rd,Frog Walk and the cemetary, no way would I do that today!!! There was a grocery shop on Stalker Lees rd - used to sell round choc ices on sticks. Not as good as Taggy's when he came round!
  5. Hi Fareast, that was my Grandad Bill! - used to go into school with him during school holidays.Spent many a happy hour 'playing' teachers in the empty classrooms. He did live on Sawdon road opposite Lockwood and Carlisle's firm. I think they made aeroplane engine parts, my Grandma was the caretaker there! Don't recognise any of the Theakers mentioned. Happy days!
  6. Oh yes! Miss Booth, remember her 'sausage' dog she used to take to school?! Mr Askham, Mr Norris, Mrs Bullas - very strict!(not sure how her name was spelt, too long ago!)
  7. Reminiscing about Abbey lane junior and infants school. Old school friends from Abbey Lane school -Help needed remembering names of teachers from mid '50's to early '60's. Anyone out there with a good memory?!
  8. Remember the row of shops on Glossop road at the top of Broomspring lane? Davy's bakery, the surgical appliance shop, ladies dress shop, Thorpe's fruit and veg, Guite's off licence? Jim the barbers.
