  1. Earlier this year I lost my father Mr Jack Foster, who was known to many in the Sheffield area. During the 1950's Jack was called to National Service and was eventually selected to join the SAS Parachute Regiment deployed to the jungles of Malaya, during the 'Malayan Emergency'. Following his passing and the recollection of his earlier memories as relayed to me, I have now written ‘Jacks Story’. ‘Jacks Story’ tells the story of the Army experience of that typical Arbourthorne lad, being drafted into National Service at only 17 years old. A rebellious youth who challenged the Army regime and spent a period inside the notorious Bielefeld Military Prison in West Germany. He would eventually settle to Army life, and later being selected to join the SAS Parachute Regiment. Deployed to fight in the jungles of Malaya during the ‘Malayan Emergency’ (Britain's very own ‘Vietnam’). Many of these older Soldiers are still with us and so humble as to what they experienced in their earlier lives and ‘Jack’s Story’ so typifies this. Today being Remembrance Sunday, I feel as a later generation we should be so grateful for the sacrifices that these earlier generations had endured. ‘Jacks Story’ is available in both Kindle and Paperback formats published on Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jacks-Story-Mark-Foster/dp/B0CLHT53Y8/ref=sr_1_1?crid=63T06KLWQOVA&keywords=jack%27s+story&qid=1699912099&sprefix=%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-1
  2. Jack played football in earlier years, and later ran the Midhill Club football team for many years. Yes there were (and probably still are 2 manhole covers on that field) adjacent to the club (Earl Marshall). So I remember them playing their home games in Graves Park. This is such an interesting thread, of the names that have been mentioned and memories of the Sheffield building trades.
  3. I have followed this thread with such interest, as my dad Jack Foster was a Bricklayer from Arbourthorne, and he worked with many of the people already mentioned in this thread. Unfortunatly Jack has recently passed away, and was well known in the Sheffield building trade of the time. Some of the people I can remember him working with are Bunny Gray, John Evans, John Sherwin, Brian Harrison, Tommy Lockwood, Pete Dyer, Geoff Hopkinson, Jack Wasden, Tony McDonagh, Brian Stokes and many more over the years.
  4. Yes there are now 2 sets going eastward, one for the right turners (new junction) and a replacement of the origional signals where the bridge was, to allow access from Kenneth St. So why dismantle the bridge ? (and just keep one set of signals) Why do planners insist that the best way forward is to slow/stop traffic (so called traffic mangement )what about pollution, cost of fuel etc
  5. No need for signals at the new junction, if the over bridge had been kept in situ for right turners, and the most pointless signals outside the Trades club, just restricts traffic flow. A road which carried traffic so efficiently, now reduced to a crawl at times, with pointless signaling.
  6. Driving along Centernery Way between St Anns roundabout and the New Wortley Rd roundabout, (adjacent to the new Tesco). What used to be a straighforward dual carrigeway is now home to additional sets of traffic lights, and the removal of an overpass (replaced with a traffic controlled junction). My concern is what a fiasco this section of road is now going to be, once the new Tesco actually opens. I can envisage both Pargate and Fitzwilliam reaching gridlock because of this. Why couldnt the dual carrigway remain as unrestricted, without all of the signalisation, what is wrong with traffic planners (surely their job is keep traffic flowing, and not just to snarl everything up like this). I expected something like this from Sheffield CC, like the hair-brain schemes at Woodseats, and the inner Ring Road, but Rotherham now seem to be slowly catching up (bus gate at Herringthorpe roundabout), from what was a town where there was such a noticable difference in smooth traffic flow, we now seem to be following Sheffield lead on how to actively discourage car users.
  7. Harrys 'shown face' and turned up for work this evening, and it seems the Look Leeds producers have had to acknowledge the 6-0 defeat of their team with all 6 shown. Harry introduced the sport and acknowledged it as the main weekends sport story. Well done Harry (it must have been difficult)
  8. If the scoreline was the other way around, i am sure we would all be treat to a full 10 minute 'Marching on Together' slot, showing all 6 goals, interviews with Brian Mc D and the players, as to how they achieved this famous victory - but they didnt, so enjoy the moment. It was the same when they lost 0-5 to Blackpool a couple of years ago, hardly mentioned by Harry and co, and then straight onto a slot about the Rugby League.
  9. Brilliant,- was that was the other L**ds based (biased) TV Station?
  10. After the humiliating defeat of the once mighty Leeds, by Wednesday at the weekend, how will Harry, and the Look L**ds production team be forced to cover the story tonight? 'A contraversial sending off, saw a 10 man Leeds side lose away, to Sheffield Wednesday, now to the weather with Paul' 6.30- BBC 1 - Enjoy the moment.
  11. Maybe better sound proofing could be installed to reduce the nightime noise. Lived here over 20 years never been as loud as past few weeks (new plant/machinery ?). I think residents ought to be aware if further noise is to generated by expansion of the works. This on top of the Bail Hostel development news !!!
  12. Typical as to why Stocksbridge is so insular, and fails to attract the investment to redevelop. How dare I question anything that the steelworks does or emits.
  13. The noise was a continual deep rumbling/whirring type noise, the strange thing is/was that walking up manchester road, until you get to the co-op you could not hear much. After the co -op/hole house lane the noise was much louder, even noticable inside with double glazing. Which leads me to wonder if anything is left open, or noise reduction measures are not working.
  14. As anyone else in Stocksbridge noticed recently the increase in noise being generated at a nightime from this plant? Over the past few weeks the 'low humming' type noise has been more noticable than previously even with the windows fully closed. I am not sure as to contact with regard to this (if any maintenance work is being carried out or new machinery installed etc, if this has contributed to the problem). I have lived up here many years and am aware of the background noise that has always occurred, but after walking up Sitwell Avenue last night, i just couldnt believe that the level of noise being generated by the works, would be accepatable in this day and age. I am sure this level of noise at a nightime cannot be good for health, or sleep patterns for residents within the vicintiy.
  15. Could well be Foxes (Tata) in Stocksbridge, the rolling mill makes a continual humming/whirring noise, and can be very loud on certain nights (with the wind/atmosheric conditions. Summer does seem to be more noisy than winter
