Did you ever live in Parson Cross? (Part 2)
peterern replied to TheBatt's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I remember having to be careful negotiating the corner at the bottom of the eightfoot. It was a bit top heavy. I hope Harry is keeping well in Cheshire. -

I always thought you worked at Newboulds. Or was that Rennie Bessen off Fulmere? I broke a tooth on the eightfoot on Boxing Day 1962. I was distracted by Michael Kemp, hands in pockets and grit put on the slide by Mrs Mansel. I landed on my chin and crashed into the railings just below the gaslamp. I ended up in casualty at the Royal Infirmary and shipped off to Charles Clifford next day. I remember Gallahers well. -

I think Bernard was a year younger than our Tony (who is 70 in July). I think Pete Booker had the bike you mention. The family were motor bike mad. Ted Auger had a lovely jag which was a rare site on fifties Parson Cross. Cars werent common then as you say but my dad had cars from the mid fities onwards, but no jags. I dont remember the three wheeler car but do recall Harry Hunt,s double decker sledge which was a rarity. Didnt he work for Fletchers? -

I think the O,Kanes lived at Doras for a while before moving first to Blackstock Rd then Milnrow. Dora married Alan Booker and they live on Hartley Brook. -

Yes Tony F does have 2 sisters as you say. Hilda was a regular at 387. I dont think she ever got over her loss. I always thought Tony was an Elvis lookalike because of his quiff but definitely based on Tony Curtis. Meeting Geoff Hayes in a while for a nostalgia meet up and Ron Betts off Fulmere Rd. Anyone remember them? Wonder what happened to Lindsay Ward -

My mother used to say that when we were little Tony Fairchild used to volunteer to take us (twins) out to give her break. I often wonder if thats how we once ended up in Ecclesfield park!. I believe he was killed when travelling in the back of a truck and it overturned at speed. I remember seeing huge crowds on the front on the day of his funeral. I,m not sure what year that was. -

Yes Pete I do remember serving you in the Tavern the last time you passed thro. but that must be 30 years ago or so. I remember you used to knock about with Eddie Auger before going in the army. Good to hear from you. Glad you know about our Steve,s book. I do remember the young kid getting crushed by the pipes on the field. -

I noticed in this week,s retro a letter from Barrie Pollard from Australia late of Wordsworth Avenue saying hallo to his friends. Would this be a relative of Raymond? -

Was that the Roger Kemp (or Terry?) who used to be a mechanic at Law Bros at the end of the 60,s early70,s.? If so, he bought my old Riley for £10. He didnt want the car (which had no chassis) just the beautiful walnut dashboard for a car he was building. I bought the car a year before for £40 and it was a beautiful car, but only did 16 miles to the gallon. -
I seem to remember it closed because they didnt serve food and lost trade as a result. A shame because it was well situated and had a lot of character.

Anyone remember Birley bowling alley in the 60s
peterern replied to Leslump's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I first went to Intake bowl abut 1962/3. I saw Barry Greenhall (left handed mechanic) bowling and fell in love with game. Still at Firth Park nearly 40 years later. I believe Neil Warnock worked at Birley for a while before beginning his professional career and eventually football management around that same tme. -

A great night at the Learning Zone centre last night with authors present as well as David Blunkett. It was great to see some old faces i,e Dave Baldwin, Keith Howard and David Platt (off Milnrow)Janet Taft and Barbara Neath (off Wordsworth). Great film of Sheffield in 1971 plus free wine and biscuits. What more could you want. -

It used to be the smell of those plastic head rests on the coach seats that made me feel sick. Mind you the 20 fags probably didnt help. -

If I remember right it was upto the driver to clean the coach after the fishing trip at Laws, because cleaners didnt work on Sundays. Some were better at it than others. Pity the Monday morning school trips. I only worked in the office and that was 40 years ago so I may be wrong or my my memory playing tricks..
