I only went to Damon's once, a few months ago, and I was not impressed. In fact, I thought it was rubbish.Â
Â
It seems a bit out of the way for a Wetherspoons.

I prefer paying by card because you've got a record on your bank statement of where you've spent the money. I use my bank's app and you can see it straightaway. If you use cash it's all too easy to get home without any money and wonder where it all went.

You made the right decision. I'm not as tall as your partner and I refuse to sit in the balcony because the seats are so uncomfortable, so your partner would have really suffered.Â
-
Another option would be to jump on a train to Manchester and go to one of the many top restaurants thereÂ
Trains don't run on Christmas Day.

The Crown and Cushion have a pub quiz every week. I think it's on Wednesdays, but you can ring them to check. 0114 246 8600

A pint of Fosters is £3.60, but half a pint is £2.50. How can they justify charging that for half a pint?
-
Good trick, given you posted this in January and the article just posted says the premises has been closed since OctoberÂ
The article doesn't say the premises has been closed since October, it says "Edward's opened its doors on Glossop Road in October last year"

The Mulberry Tavern and the Church House.

Tia Anna was once on Britains got talentÂ
LOL. Amanda Holden described her as "beyond rubbish".

Is it true that OMG is now open only on Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun ?Â
No, it's open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Look at Climax, once a month. Used to be a highlight that was packed, again, now much quieter and nothing compared to what it was around 2006-10.Â
Â
Climax is no more. It's now called Proud:

Fairfield inn - amazing to think this iconic pub is returning to life!Â
I know people call it the Fairfield, but it's actually the Farfield, -no i before the r.

Certainly, reuse old threads if the topic is the same, but in this case it isn't the same. The topic of the old thread was a rumour about the place closing, the recent posts are nothing to do with this rumour so a new thread would be more appropriate. Reusing the old thread just keeps the rumour alive.

I've used the app in the Bankers Draft and it works a treat. The drinks were delivered seconds after ordering them and the food not long after.

Most people I know won't pay £6 for a pint at all in Sheffield, under any circumstance.Â
I'm with you there. I don't know anybody who'd pay that price in Sheffield.

Yes, it is. Thank you. & I can't see anywhere on there where it tells you what night it is held evey month. There is nothing under the events tab & it only seems to show past events, not future events. The next one I can see is the Xmas Glitterbal party, which isn't exactly a regular club night.Do they not do a regular monthly club night anymore, then? I'm sure when I last went it was the 3rd friday of each month.
Â
Climax is still usually on the third Friday, but this isn't guaranteed. Sometimes it's on a different Friday, -presumably for scheduling reasons, to avoid clashes with other events at the Students Union.
Â
They don't advertise it very well and it's often difficult to find out when it is. It might be on next Friday, 20 November, (the third Friday) but that's just a guess. There's nothing online anywhere to confirm it.

The Star & Garter had some loyal regular customers, but there were only a few of them, so although it's very sad to see it go, it's no surprise, really. I always wondered why it didn't get more custom from students, being the closest pub to the university, but maybe students prefer their own bars in the students' union, or the bars in town, instead.

and a certain famous local international celebrities birthday :-O So I am sure that there will be a special show in OMG/Desmpeys tomorrow night :-)Â
Thank you for the warning. We all now know to avoid OMG and Dempseys tomorrow.
-
So I have an important question. I'm asked by my dog ... which is better for karaoke ... omg or Dempseys? On the plus side of OMG they always let you sing if you put a song up and they give you a free shot for singing on the plus side of Dempseys they have a wide song choice and they have karaoke on downstairs pretty much every weekday on the downside of Dempseys they don't give you anything for singing and you may not always get your song called out it depends on the DJ and on the downside of OMG the song choices is limited and the only do karaoke on a Thursday so what are other people's experiences good or bad ?Â
Whenever I'm in Dempseys everybody seems to get their song called, although if there are a lot of requests you might have to wait a while before you're called, to give everybody a fair chance. I've never known them ignore anybody, which seems to be what you're implying.

But Sheffield's scene cannot properly thrive on two venues alone. It needs a diversity of LGBT run venues: cocktail bars, pubs popular for groups such as lesbians, 'bears', even a place that might hold a regular fetish night.Â
If Sheffield can't sustain the two full-time gay bars that we've got at the moment, where are the customers going to come from for any more?
Â
All this and more existed less than 10 years ago; for example Xes, Cossack, Affinity, Planet, etc.Â
The Cossack has been demolished for over ten years now, and it was closed for longer than that. Affinity was good for a while, but it ultimately failed and closed. Xes and Planet were out at Attercliffe and they were very successful in their day, but who would want to go out to Attercliffe these days?
Â
Yes, we do still have the Bronx Sauna or whatever it is called out in Attercliffe, but the steep prices that saunas charge are beyond the pocket of so many of us...Â
You can't class a sauna in the same category as a gay bar/club.
Â
Look at how many venues there are in Manchester: If Sheffield had proportionately the same number of gay venues per population it would have around five or six, including bars/pubs, clubs, a showbar and maybe even a restaurant.Â
Manchester's gay scene wasn't created overnight, it built up gradually. If Sheffield is ever going to have a larger, more vibrant scene, it will also have to build up gradually. New venues won't open unless the existing ones are seen to be successful.

Oh dear !!! Hope its not going to vanish like Icons et-al. Lovely friendly staff and good events like the recently commenced Sunday Cabaret with Professional Drag Acts:clap:Â
The barman tells me that OMG just rent the premises. The landlord is selling up, but the business is not affected.

Sorry..my bad..i was looking at the wrong bit of the map..it was on the corner of funival gate and union street..it was definitely around 2005 though. I don't know what is in that area now because I moved to Australia 9 years agoÂ

Â
If you came out of fuel and turned left up funival gate then took the 1st right that leads up to the town hall it was just on the corner on the left
Â
Left up Furnival Gate then right up to the Town Hall would take you up Pinstone Street. On the corner, on the left, where it crosses Charles Street, just behind the old Midland/HSBC Bank, was the Freedom Club, is that where you mean? I think it was run by Alan and Angel who took it over after the Planet closed down. I think that was a bit before 2005 though.
Â

Â
This was the Freedom Club, all boarded up in Green in this Google Street View picture. It wasn't open very long.

Â
Or this is the Nelson Rock Bar (now the Rocking Chair) at the corner of Furnival Gate and Union Street, opposite Redgates. I've forgotten its name during its brief gay spell, but a Google search suggests it was called Bar Miles.
Â
-
Opposite Redgates? That's not Charles Street then, or Norfolk Street, that's Furnival Gate. Are you thinking of what's now the Rocking Chair, used to be Nelson's rock bar, and something else before that? It was a gay bar for a short time, but that was well before 2005, it was more like the late 1990s.
