  1. Thankyou Darrell for the information. I have just had a look on ANCESTRY and a Thomas Gould married Frances Burton D.O.B 1890, in the year 1917, looking at the date of Frances D.O.B, It looks like Thomas Gould could just be Charles & Niomi Gould's son, if he was that would make him my g grandma's nephew................and his son Thomas Gould her g nephew or is that nephew once removed.............
  2. My dad was reading this today and noticed the name Joan Suter, He said he knew a Joan & Bob Suter that lived in his grandma & grandad's yard, on Addsetts Street, he said Bob worked as a lorry driver at British Steel. and that he had a brother called David Suter. I think he said 23 Addsetts Street was a shop and that one of the Suter's worked in there.......
  3. Hi Ivandarrell, I have been doing my family tree, my g grandma on my mum's side of the family, lived at no 54 Bothem Street, on the 1891 census, her name was Pheobe Gould, she was living with, it says her cousin but I think it was her brother and his wife. their name's were Charles Gould 1859 - 1911 wife Niomi Smith ( Dack ) on the 1901 census they have 3 children, Albert Gould 1891, Thomas Gould 1895, & Elizabeth Gould 1897. Still living at same address. Pheobe married a Arthur Chappell, occupation pig / cattle dealer. and moved to Kilton Hill, Pitsmoor. they had 3 children, George Chappell 1893, Doris Chappell 1897 & Annie Chappell 1900, Pheobe and Arthur separated and Arthur kept all 3 children. in 1903. My greataunt Annie told me that they never heard of Pheobe again, and remembered very little about her. I was wondering with you mentioning your uncle was called Tommy Gould and lived at 50 Bothem Street, the family might have lived there all there lives and might have been a relation to my g grandma.........because on my dads side of the family he had 3 generations living on Draper Street in the same house from about 1860 till around them pulling them down .......
  4. I have been doing my family tree and Herbert Hensman was married to my g g Aunt Ginney ( Jayne Terry ) Herbert Hensman's parents used to run the pub before him. 1891 census .....Joseph Hensman & Harriett Hensman lived at 14 Botham Street. 1901 census...... Joseph Hensman age 42 , Inn Keeper, Who Can Tell, 33 Botham Street ...living with wife Harriett Hensman age 38. 1911 census.......Harriett Hensman, ( widow ) Licence Holder, living with son Herbert Hensman age 19, son Lawrence Hensman age 18, daughter Doris Hensman age 15 ........ I have got a newspaper cutting from the Sheffield STAR ,dated Tuesday, 12 January 1971, it mentions and has a picture of the who can tell, but it does not tell you how it got its name, I have asked my dad but he has no idea. he said if Herbert had said that about when the pub was been built, someone asked the builders the name, and he shouted down "who can tell" and apparently it stuck... he said he should know, he had lived on Bothem Street all his life till then...
  5. My Great Uncle Cyril Coulson, 19 Addsetts Street ( Ginney ( Jane Terry ) & Herbert Hensman's ( who can tell ) nephew ).............. The very first Star walk race in 1922, was his very first walking race, he was 20 years old at the time. He didn't do very well in that race, but carried on power walking and ended up holding every British record at the time from 1 mile to 10 miles and in 1924 was selected for the Olympic games but didn't get past the final selection. In 1982 when the star walk was 60 years old, he was invited to set the Star Walk off, which he did ......

Hi - I have been doing my family tree, most of my ancester's came from Grimesthorpe, Aunt Ginny ( Jane Terry ) was my great grandma's sister and was married to Herbert Hensman, they didnt have any children of their own, but they used to foster children. I knew Ginny when she was an old lady, because she lived with my gran ( Elizabeth Wall , born on Chambers Lane ) & grandad ( Fredrick Coulson born on Adsetts Street ) for a while, before she went into an old peoples home...I have been looking on this site to see if there are any old storie's of what life was like in Grimesthorpe...
