    they have to.

This year (2024) they have a balanced budget - for which i think they deserve a lot of credit.

But they know they're heading for a short-fall. Funding is going down, costs are going up.

The term 'fire sale' suggests selling quickly, at far below market rate, which seems unlikely.

selling assets to pay for day to day spending is madness. It's clearly an unsustainable strategy. Sooner or later they will have to cut services to fit their budget, better to do it sooner than sell off community assets.

It's exactly the kind of project we should be doing IMHO. And once we had started should see it through in its entirety.

How much of the spend comes back to the treasury in tax? How much more economic activity and stimulus, and therefore tax back to the treasury is generated?

I have read that now the existing line is going to have to be upgraded to allow more trains instead. This will take 10 years with frequent rail replacement buses. The capacity has to be increased somehow.

I'm pretty sure humanity did an excellent job killing each other before guns came along.

    Yep.

BUT was not easy for an individual to kill 20 people just like that as happens in the USA. So letting any person have a gun is a stupid idea.

When you have an issue, who do you contact?

Online or telephone, or maybe in person?

I have always contacted the council directly, always online.

My local councils office is no longer open the general public, I guess that is because of safety issues. There are some nutters out there.

How many of your local councillors would you recognise if you passed them in the stree, do they live close by, perhaps they shop in the local supermarket?

Mine was Tom Hunt. But the only time I really needed help he ignored my emails Too busy building his career I suppose.

Over the last few months I have noticed in local press a lot of ideas been put forward on how to make Attercliffe either more residential or made into a shopping area of sorts.

My interest in the area is mostly historical also recording changes though photography but sometimes I think what could be done. Along Attercliffe Road are many nice buildings in varying state of repair some listed others not.

If a lot housing was built would you live there or would the area have to undergo major change before you would consider it as possible place to live?

The benefits would be easy access to the city centre or Meadowhall by public transport a lot of brown field sites to build on or is Attercliffe an non starter?

I wouldn’t live there, but if flats were cheap enough an investment might be worth a punt given how much kelham prices went up.

I have heard the same too. Helicopter flying overhead. Crookes has been steadily declining over the years.

Has it? Murders in that area are nothing new. Quite a few shootings in Crookes/Walkley in the last 20 years. So I wouldn't worry unless the number per year has increased.

Crookes/walkey side, yes. Early 1900. I did ask this- surveyor felt was more likely to be an addition, rather than original attic. True re: roof, tho also told this replacement should also have regs. Wondering if a previous owner was quite keen on doing their own renovations..

is surveyor local? If not, they won't know anything about what was built in Walkley. When I sold mine I was warned by the estate agent about this and told to make sure the estate agent pushes back on any buyer who claims the attic had been converted.

One thing you can check is whether on the same road all the terraced houses have an attic room. If they do, that's a sign they are all likely original.

    11 hours ago, mafya said:

Is the house registered with the land registry as a 2 bedroom or a 3 bedroom house?

if it’s registered as a 3 bedroom end house then the surveyor is being a jobsworth and the house did originally have 3 bedrooms when built.

If it’s registered as a 2 bedroom end house then the attic room has been converted and building regs will be an issue.

That's not true. The house I sold was a 2 bedroom house - bedroom 2 was in the attic and was original. On the middle floor there 3 rooms - a bedroom, a bathroom and a room that was too small to call it a bedroom legally.

Hiya - I tried to do a little search on this forum but couldnt find it easily - apologies if this has been asked before. In the midst if trying to complete a purchase a three bed house, whereby room 3 is converted attic. Unclear when the conversion was done, but there is some evidence of other changes in 2013, and a newer-ish roof which might back up this estimate. Unlikely to be an original feature. Unfortunately, the current owners didn't make these changes, and bought the place knowing there were no regs. This has now become my own knowledge fairly late on the buying process. Is this something that is common in Sheffield? Is it cause for serious concern - or par for the course with old properties? I am looking to use this as an office/spare room, so ideally want a safe and functional room, and also don't want to get totally screwed if and when we resell on one day. Any thoughts..?

Where is the house? Many terraced houses in Walkley have original attic rooms.

The new roof might just be a replacement - they don’t last forever.

    how old is the house?

Tom Hunt is the new leader and was interviewed on BBC news last night.

Only been a councillor for a year and won his seat with a majority of 98 votes.

Look on bright side, he can't be worse than previous incumbents.

All I'll say was when I emailed him to help resolve an issue with the council he didn't bother to even reply. Clearly concerned about his constituents. From what I've read he may be a career politician and this is all just a fast track to be an MP in a safe seat eventually.

The rose house could be a great pub in the right hands - smack bang in Walkley - get some decent beers on and it would get used no problem.

it’s had its windows boarded up for 6 months so who would go in there now.

don’t get the jospresso thing shutting down - always seemed busy to me.

    t

but it was tiny and never massively busy when I went in. Always wondered how it could be possibly make enough money for Joe to live on.

I’ve been picking up some negativity about the new owners on FB and from my neighbors, apparently they didn’t show up to run their business for a few days this week and nobody could contact them.

Unfortunately I think they will struggle without the post office. When I lived in Walkley two things attached me to Beaches - the butchers which had excellent quality meat and the post office. Am skeptical whether this new curry part is enough to keep it going or not. There are many options for takeaway curries in Walkley, so its a very saturated market.

When the great one was our leader, there were discussions about whether or not we will repay our debt, or leave it to the next generation.

There has been no announcement by Truss, that we cannot afford tax cuts because we need to repay our debt.

No government has ever repaid our debt.

    1 - No

2 - Yes but only for a limited period (and if so how long)

    3 - Yes

    * Insulation is not the panacea many people seem to think. We have a very well insulated house with a 3kW Solar system, in fact there is nothing practical we can do to improve it. And we only have our CH on about 4 hrs a day, and at only 20 degrees, yet our bills (still pegged at 2020 rates.....) were £1500 a year. I hate to think what they will be from next year, £4000 ?

Do you have a big house? Have never paid 1500 a year in my leaky Victoria terrace even with heating on all day.

Everyone blaming Brexit.  This was before Brexit.

Queues at Dover on the first weekend of the Summer holidays happen every year.

Dover port delays: families stuck on roads told chaos will last until Monday
Holidaymakers and lorry drivers trapped in traffic for up to 12 hours, with delays blamed on shortage of French border staff

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/23/port-of-dover-seven-hour-delays-border-checks-france

Maybe read the article properly next time?

It says it was caused by two effects - a staff shortage and extra checks due to the heightened security in the aftermath of terrorist attacks. Whilst in the last days we again had a combination of a staff shortage and *extra* checks caused by brexit.  A check on  passports that used to take seconds now takes around 1.5 minutes because each passport must be stamped. Why? Because as a consequence of Brexit we became a third country.

Was the same when I went to Switzerland a month ago - much slower because now they have to ask each person questions about what they are doing, when they will leave and then stamp the passport.

Well go on tell us how many?  Who's to say that Brexiteers are the ones queueing?

Watched Labour's Shadow Trade & Industry Sec, Nick Thomas-Symonds, (no I wouldn't recognise him either, he appears to have a lower profile than some of the SNP MPs), being interviewed this morning on Sky News on the subject of the Dover delays.

Sky - what's your take on things?   Paraphrasing to save time.  Thomas-Symonds, "Teresa May; Brexit; Tories: Boris; Partygate; etc, etc.

Asked about the French claims that the delays were due to Eurotunnel issues which turned out not to be true, Thomas-Symonds' response, again paraphrasing, "Er?"

Asked about the confirmed reports that it was actually the French officials basically being intransigent that was causing the delays, once again paraphrasing, "Well they all need to get around the negotiating table.  But I still blame Teresa May; Brexit; Boris; Partygate, etc, etc."

Personally, I hope our Customs are taking the same line with French passport holders.  Inconvenience them. " Sorry Pierre, get back in line and stay there.  Helmut's & Diego's families are before yours."

Its a simple fact a check that used to take seconds now takes 90 seconds. Even with all 12 booths staffed there will be long queues, where there were none/short queues before. It's the same at nearly all land borders in the world that don't have free movement.

  16. The mum claims all the kids playing the game make these kinds of statements. If true, then its unlikely to mean he would do it and locking up everyone who says it is pointless...the cop seems to confirm this by saying they lock kids up all the time for saying this kind of thing (are they all really about to commit mass murder?).

But if not true, then given they have mass shootings the kid probably needs locking up.

What really brings home to people just how selfish these Unions are is how it affects people on a personal level.

Some friends of mine were going to go on holiday to Newquay this summer by train. But they do not feel they can book it now because they cannot be sure the train will run. They would probably get the fare back (though it's load of hassle) but they will have paid for the hotel and booked off their holiday from work. Thus, I think, they have decided to not go, the third year they will have had no holiday.....

And that, in a microcosm, is why I do not think rail workers should be allowed to go on strike.

I'm sure the unions will feel sorry for my friends, not. After all they want to cause as much inconvenience to as many people as possible, ****ers.

Normally, in most businesses, a drop in demand (and these threats of strike action must be causing that) would mean less jobs and/or hours for the workers, so why should rail workers not suffer the consequences of their own actions ?

They will. If lots of people behave like your friends, then revenue is going to drop even more. The railways already run at a loss due to the EFH drop in demand. I suspect the strikes would further ingrain that, which will just mean even more money has to be saved from somewhere....

Maybe the British constitution needs an overhaul.

Johnson routinely lies to parliament every week during PMQs. So its odd that suddenly Tory MP's care about this in one specific case.

If you’re using an estate agent ask them for a recommendation, they will have an arrangement with a trustworthy firm that will give you a deal.

Best is to get a recommendation from a friend you know well, though as I found a lot of people could only say all the ones they had used were useless...

    i bought my e-bike 5 years ago, for £1800.

i use it for commuting to work (about 2 days per week), and a few errands, etc.

in 5 years, it's been totally reliable, requiring nothing more than new brake pads - once.

a similarly reliable car would have cost what? £6k? (or more, easily)

the monthly payment for a £6k loan, for 5 years, would be £120/month = £1440 per year.

    + insurance (our small hatchback is £600 /year) = £2000/year

+  MOT = £2050 (assuming no work required)

    + annual service = £2200

annual service costs of £2200? Either you have a very expensive car and are taking to a main dealer, or you have been ripped off there IMO...

Even my minis big service where they did everything was £600, a normal service would be well below that.

Similar how can an MOT be £2050??

I spend more like £700-800 a year on servicing, insurance etc. And I don't pay a monthly lease which is a very expensive way to own a car.

An ebike is fine for short journeys, but many have family living all over the country. So an e-bike would be an extra cost, not a substitute cost.
