  1. In addition to the City Council elections, PCC elections and referendum (has there actually been any sort of campaign for the existing "strong leader" model?) there are 4 Parish Council by elections in Ecclesfield following the disintegration of the group of "independent" councillors elected in 2019. 2 of the councillors who resigned are standing in the by-elections they caused and the literature from the 2 warring factions of independents seems focused on flinging mud at each other. One of said factions consists entirely of people involved with (and focused wholly on) Chapeltown market, which is a very unhealthy situation when you stop and think about all the other businesses and voluntary groups in the local area. We don't need any branch of government, no matter how junior made subservient to the whims of one business.
  2. The kneejerk reaction of a lot of racists on social media was to blame asians. There were plenty of people ignoring the inconvenient truth that Barnsley has a very low number of asians before the Daily Fail picked up on that line.
  3. Visited today. Quite good. A few of the stalls I recognized from gift fairs at Elsecar Heritage Centre. It reminded me a little bit of the street market at Crookes, but on a smaller scale. A massive improvement from how Chapeltown Market was before.
  4. Plans are being made to give Chapeltown Market a revamp and a rebranding. Future plans are on the below website https://traxxsheffield.co.uk/ https://traxxsheffield.co.uk/morethan-market/ Market will be open on Saturday 4th July with plenty of new stalls. Hoping that this is a success and will get more people visiting Chapeltown.
  5. The "messaging service" is called Parler and appears to be a right wing version of Twitter. Personally I think there's plenty of other right wing websites all chasing after the same market of far right types looking for an echo chamber so I fail to see the point of it.
  6. Terrible news. And you wonder how many more city center venues will follow suit before long. ☚ī¸
  7. 2020 just gets worse and worse! https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/marmite-shortage-as-pub-closures-result-in-scarcity-of-brewers-yeast-a4465626.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1XtSX7IBhmHED8zb2QyRtyJNhcN7zPyP-jqdC_rFz__eiX1kJwOVx2QOw#Echobox=1591830932
  8. What shops do people actually want to see in the Civic Centre? Are we going to have to relocate the Post Office, Unstone Hill Farm Shop and Coffee Central to there if we want the Civic Centre to be more than just a car park?
  9. Given that Olivia Blake is Labour's candidate in said upcoming by-election, almost certainly yes!
  10. Central government may have ordered Sheffield City Council to build x many new houses. That's certainly the situation North East Derbyshire council found themselves in. Complete with local conservatives leading the charge against what Conservatives in Westminster had ordered North East Derbyshire council to do!
  11. Having moved into Sheffield from Dronfield (where the North East Derbyshire local plan has generated a great deal of controversy) last year I fully expect this to become a major issue in Sheffield local politics. https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/we-need-city-blueprint-planning-councillor-criticises-leaders-for-delay-on-local-plan-488896?fbclid=IwAR2E_N2Wn-ip4GP1DTcI5dVsiq7gePlRvyLCL9TsDU-BoY7P7hjkl5FniVU
  12. Sheffield is not without those issues. Seen it a few times in the area around the old Castle Market. 🙁
  13. Can't talk about Sheffield and Barnsley town centres without comparison with others nearby. And quite honestly there area fair few towns out there whose town centres put both Sheffield and Barnsley to shame.
  14. For all Leeds faults, it's got a superb indoor market that puts both Sheffield and Barnsley to shame.
  15. I'm afraid I don't always trust what they tell you on the news these days. Also worth noting that Streatham went very heavily for Remain in the 2016 referendum so if you don't like a Streatham MP standing up for what his constituents want then tough.
  16. Also completely wrong. John Hemming was much worse before he was voted out. And many Liberal Democrats would quite like Jess Phillips, the Labour MP who replaced him to join them as well. Also, if you want worse sitting MP's then then Chuka Umunna there are many, many worse examples from Jared O'Mara to Priti Patel to Caroline Flint to Mark Francois to Chris Williamson to Dominic Raab.
  17. Wrong. Results from the last general election https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streatham_(UK_Parliament_constituency) Labour Chuka Umunna 38,212 68.5 +15.5 Conservative Kim Caddy 11,927 21.4 -3.7 Liberal Democrat Alex Davies 3,611 6.5 -2.5 Green Nicole Griffiths 1,696 3.0 -5.8 UKIP Robert Stephenson 349 0.6 -2.6 Majority 26,285
  18. To be honest, I think most Liberal Democrats would still go for somebody like Layla Moran over Chuka Umunna if there were to be another leadership contest further down the road.
  19. Not a statement to give you confidence in the talent available in the Conservative party!
  20. Good on Chuka for doing this. A number of us have been on the same journey since the 2016 referendum. Fed up with the sheer unadulterated tribalism, spitefulness and failure to face up to reality from the main two parties.

  22. Yep. Rory Stewart is the best of an abysmal, delusional and dishonest bunch. He doesn't stand a chance as the Tory grassroots are entirely removed from reality and want ideological purity over all other considerations.
  23. The people in Labour calling for a by election for the ex-Labour MP in Penistone and Stocksbridge are very quiet about the idea of a by election for the ex-Labour MP in Sheffield Hallam for some reason. Mind you, given their poor showing at recent local and EU elections I can't see our Labour friends piping up about by-elections for defectors quite as readily at present.
  24. Change UK / TIG have split. Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith is one of those splitting. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48515505
