  1. personally i think that the h&m addition will be an improvement to sheffield. it is definately much better than primark etc... it's disposable, affordable fashion for the youth market.... students will lap it up, i'm sure topshop, burtons etc won't be too happy that it's moving in. after all, there are 35,000 odd students in sheffield or something? i don't agree on the marketing thing about it 'tricking' people to go in....... they don't advertise goods at £2.... that's matalan, tescos or somewhere. the only ones i had seen with prices on were £30+ price range. i enjoy shopping at h&m's (meadowhell isn't a good one). there is usually good choice and the clothes look a lot better than anything out of topman/burtons etc.
  2. the whole point of decent graffiti is the fact that it's a visual expression of the artist's statement which may go otherwise unseen/unheard. even if this work was in a gallery i'm guessing you wouldn't go inside and even see their point of view anyway. this way you will see it....... so they make their point. it is very hard for an unknown individual to get art into art galleries, it's just not that simple. there's a clear difference between mindless daubing and well thought out pieces of art. surely you can distinguish between the two and appreciate the latter for what it is. maybe part of the blame lies with society, if there were more places available to practice and express/create such work, there wouldn't be such a need for it to be done illegally on private property. it's easy to blame the person doing it, but what about the cause that made them do it? visit the banksy website, read it all. let us know your thoughts please anyways i know that we all have our own opinion, the above is just mine
  3. t020 think ur getting a bit mixed up here..... tagging is bad i agree, that sort of graffiti is a mess please just read a banksy book actually visit his website- http://www.bansky.com please tell us what you think here's a list of books if ur interested in looking into this artform more- http://www.duncancumming.co.uk/resources.cfm?Book=64&ID=1#Resource64 and i really don't think sheffield has a bad problem with graffiti, maybe it's just because you are here more that you see it more.
  4. and it's obvious what you are trying to get at......... even if he hasn't painted the outside of his house, so what? graffiti is art and should be out there for the masses to see.
  5. honestly this is so stupid!! what proper graffiti artists create should and is by many considered to be art, go look in the book shop, there are many books available. i don't know if it's just a generation gap thing, i am young, i appreciate art and design and definately find graffiti to be interesting, it's a reflection of the youth of our society and (if u go and look at some books), it also can tackle current social/political issues as art in an gallery does. i don't know if it's the conservative culture that exists in many british cities to keep things surpressed but why not decorate our grey and boring cities...... other european cities do not have a problem with it. it's art, it's an expression. anyways, appologies for grammer etc.... i know there's not much point in writing this as the older generation clearly do not 'get it'!
  6. i went into town yesterday, it had it's ups and downs... tried to speak to the council but they weren't having none of it, said i'd have to write a letter outlining what i wanted to talk about before i could get a response/interview. went to nomad but it was shut, spoke to john there and have arranged a meeting went to roundabout project but the john there was busy so got to arrange a meeting spoke to 3 homeless people, who told me what it is like living on the streets. one estimated that there are currently 20-30 people living rough in sheffield, and it is at its lowest at this time of year. also.... does anyone know if there is any legistation about erecting temporary structures etc... my project could take this direction but my tutor thinks there isn't any point in doing the project if it's going to break the law!
  7. Plain Talker, i will be trying to visit the king's centre, didn't realise it was only around the corner from our campus. do you know what nights the soup wagon is there or what days there would possibly be anyone around to speak to? thanks to everyone's help so far. i'm going into town this arvo to check out these places of support.
  8. there are people in this country that sleep rough. to quote- "There are many different types of homeless people. The mentally ill, the chemically dependent, those who are unable to afford housing, men, women, families, even those who prefer this way of life are included among the vast cross section of homeless people in every urban instance. Each group of homeless has subjective needs based on circumstance and location." whether i create something that enables the homeless to stay warmer at night or feel more secure or provides a meal then that's ok. but basically i'm trying to find out what they need to improve their quality of life. is there anything else unclear?
  9. ok, well this isn't specific to only sheffield then.... as there are many homeless around the country and the world
  10. my dad's a corgi gasman.... and he charge's about £40 to tap a gas supply
  11. skar those look really good. are they all in sheff? saw those john peel stencils around town, they were top quality too. how many of these are around town? think i've seen about 5?
  12. yeah sorry i meant the salvation army.... gonna go to these places and see what's what
  13. hi i'm looking into what the current state of homelessness (is that a word?) is in sheffield.... i'm doing product design at sheffield hallam and i want to design something that will make an improvement to their lives. it may only be something temporary and only make a small difference but i still see it as an interesting opportunity for a project. i know there are big issue sellers about and have seen the 'soup run' that was on division street car park. does anyone know if this is still there and which day(s) it is too? i'm after any opinions on the matter or info (i read the thread about the blond lady around west street so thanks for that) and any places that offer advice etc. i know the samaritan's is near atkinsons/stokes tiles... other places like this would be a valuable resource. ultimately i will be going out to speak to the homeless around sheffield to hear what they have to say and what problems they face. thanks for reading, any help much appreciated Tom
