  1. Hi John. You're so right about Life Boys and BB. I remember even now the pride of having the Life Boy hat, jumper and socks! I also remember being in St Davids... contempories being the 3 Thiel brothers, Terry Macnamara, Gwynne Williams amongst others. Looked on as a forerunner to BB, but provides so many memories of early friendships...particularly a day out to the ancient city of York.
  2. Superb photos John. Brought back many memories, particularly as not been back to the Church since the late 1960's. The internal shot of the organ and front area reminds me of the annual Sermons as a youngster (1950's), when we seemed to be perched precariously on the temporary seating in front of the adult choir. Despite the covering over the bench seating, you could often see down through gaps to the floor which seemed to be far below.
  3. I lived on Adsetts Street from approx 1955 until our house was demolished in 1970 and well remember the cobble stones of the street and the large number of people who played football along Adsetts Street and across the bottom of Bland Street, which is of course very close to the site of your photos. Happy days indeed.
  4. I also started at FPGS in 1962 & remember the 4 names above. But no knowledge of what became of them. But there is a website: http://firthparkgrammarschool.wordpress.com/ which has photos of various form classes (on the home page under 'forms' I think) and there is one for Form 5A 1966/67 which includes Geoff Cook and John Lewis on the front row - I'm also on the front row. DY
  5. Ralph many thanks for the photos. Especially the photo of Neil R. & Les Cusworth, which brought back many fond memories of my time in the Life Boys and Boys Brigade and Sunday School at Grimesthorpe W R chapel. I was very sad that my first trip down to a reunion missed Neil's last ever visit by just 6 months. I've not lived in Grimesthorpe since our house on Adsetts Street was demolished in1969/70 - but the memories of growing up in the area are still easily brought to mind as are the people, even though it is decades since I may have seen some of them. Don.
  6. Brought up on Adsetts Street-No 28, I remember the shop fondly-used to buy biscuits there as a very young lad. They were stored loose in large tins on a rack against the wall-my favourites were half coated chocolate Lincoln biscuits-these used to go down a treat when dunked in cold tizer...... also had to fetch a concoction of Indian Brandy and Composition for my mother and Auntie whenever they were "off colour" from your aunties shop. Strange what you remember from your past! Don
  7. this seems to be a photo of (the late) Patrick Suter, who lived in the house on the corner of Clevedon Street/Adsetts Street-the house was directly across from The Prince of Wales (one landlady of this old pub Maureen Suter being his sister) and diagonally opposite Suters shop. Don
  8. NettieJ/Sheila/Walt-agree with your names. Phil Reaney is 2nd row up 1st left. teacher is Mr Ambler. Others I think I recognised are: Top row Rodney Haynes (1st left) & Colin Burdett (2nd right)-both lived on Wade Street. 3rd row up: Elaine Shaw (2nd left) & Diane Hanson (3rd left)-Adsetts Street. 2nd row up: Susan Blagg? (2nd left), Kath Fleming next to her, Susan Whitaker ???(5th left) & Shirley Gill (2nd right). Front Row: Michael ? (1st left), David Johnson (2nd left) & John Wright (1st right). Please correct me if I'm wrong and please fill in the blanks. Who would have thought that these old school pics could bring back so many memories.... I keep remembering other names as the days wear on.
  9. Also just read the book-good nostalgia that more than scratches the surface of the area, but more importantly gets you thinking of past (happier?) days in Grimesthorpe. Of particular interest to me was the route of the Grimesthorpe Feast Walk-like most other kids of the time I only followed Albert Parr until he got his annual car ride and then scuttled off back to the Victoria to see the finish. As it is raining again outside, I took to looking at old fotos and found this one. http://s1009.photobucket.com/albums/af215/benbob02/ From my age at the time (I'm top row farthest on right), this is a class of 9/10 year olds-looking more like little adults than school kids-Susan827 (Susan H.) is on the back row 4th from the left, I think. I'm sure some of you can name the rest.
  10. As you look at foto, Pauline is 2nd from right (smiling) on the middle row, with Joan Clegg (I think) next to her at the end of the row. Foto definitely early 1950's-other than that, I can't help with names-so there does seem a lot of young Grimesthorpe ladies to be named! Don
  11. http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af215/benbob02/img003.jpg This foto also from family album-but couldn't manage to forward it on previous post -still much better than last attempt about 4 months ago when I brought it on as a foto negative! Computer literate never likely to appear on my CV..... This again Grimesthorpe Reform Chapel and our Pauline amongst the paraders-but who are the rest? Messrs Wise and Alan W are there I think. Have a couple more skool fotos to put on but need a rest and a stiff drink first Don.
  12. http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af215/benbob02/img002.jpg hopefully have brought forward this foto found in the family album. Relates to Grimesthorpe Reform Chapel. Pauline Marshall on and also Joan Clegg. Can anyone help on identifying the others.
  13. Hi NettieJ - Ray visited us last weekend - also spoke to Karen, who is soon to become a grandma for the first time. They did actually live below the Hicks on Adsetts Street. Their homes were created by converting the old public house (the Dolphin) into two homes, with the Hicks' on the top floor and the Marshalls on the ground floor. Christine had a brother called Keith who has also been mentioned before on this thread, I think. Ray can't remember the place as 'the Dolphin', however.
  14. Yes Raymond is their father. They also have a brother (Ian). Do you know Karen/Wendy from the old days?
  15. Sally-welcome-see u got my letter! As NettieJ said, your mam was Lily of the Valley when May Queen at the Reform Chapel. As you said, she would have loved it on here. Don.
