  1. Just in case anyone's not seen it, here's a link to the photo of the 'Who Can Tell' on Picture Sheffield.... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s21772&prevUrl=
  2. Here's a thatched cottage on Bonet Lane. Must have been before the one you mention. http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;y00047&pos=1&action=zoom&id=47345
  3. Just to clarify, was that Firth Brown Tools as Firth Brown was across Carwood Road? I used to have day release at FB in 1959 and went to an old Victorian school somewhere off Carlisle Street East. Don't think it was on Forncett Street as I recall it being on a hill. The nearest shot is a boy's school on Lyons Street mentioned on here ..... http://www.sheffieldscoutarchives.org.uk/groups/Groups_76_100.html
  4. Just a reminder to everyone, Forncett Street ends at the junction with Lyons Street which is adjacent to Carwood Road near the Corner Pin. Here's the pub on Carlisle Street East with Lyons Street to the right of it. Forncett Street is behind the pub to the left off Lyons Street at the end of the low wall and out of sight. Carwood Road is out of sight to right just out of pic. and meets the junction with Carlisle St. E. ...... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;u08508&prevUrl= All I can remember about the plot of land bounded by Carwood Road, Carlisle Street East, Garter Street and Petre Street was the ambulance room accessed from Carlisle St. E. and also Vacuum Melting, where my old deceased pal worked for a while in the early 60s. This was accessed from near the top of Garter Street. There were more shops below that one stretching down to Carlisle Street East but I don't know what they were. The tops of some of those buildings can be seen a little down the hill through the windows atop the internal brick wall on the pic. below. The pic shows the Vac. Melt. plant with the new additional 2nd furnace in 1965. It's the one on the right I believe, with more glazing on it's control room, as I remember going inside the one on the left a few years before...... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;u08905&prevUrl=
  5. Hello stpetre, It seems my tap (see post 646) could well have been made between 1934 and 1946 in the area you mention. Carlisle Street East and Savile Street East were as you say for 'heavier stuff' however there were some light machine shops on the right of the yard at 37 gate on Savile Street East in my time at FB. (1959 to 1966). My box (see post 646) could have been ordered in from outside suppliers but could, I suppose, have been made by onsite carpenters. But that's another storey Regards, Peter.
  6. I think your assumption is most likely correct. Closer scrutiny of the Graces Guide page shows up this pic of the New engineers' tool dept of Thos. Firth and John Brown in 1934. Presumably this was the 'old tool premises' prior to the new 1946 premises you mention. The top right pic shows 'wire drill manufacture'.... https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im1934v157-p630.jpg Still don't know where that was though and presume it became defunct in 1946.
  7. I have a 1954 hardback produced by Firth Brown of the history of the Company. The only brief reference regarding your question states that... In 1946 a separate tool steel department was set up in extensive new premises. However it doesn't give locations. It then goes on to say further down the list the same info as in Graces Guide on my previous post i.e. ... In 1946 Firth Brown Tools was formed as a separate Company to take over manufacture of engineers' tools. Unclear to me too stpetre. Interestingly the 'Speedicut' name is shown on this 1946 ad. on the Graces Guide page in my previous post. https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im19460130MT-Firth.jpg
  8. Have just noticed this post number 9 in 2011 on this page from June Warrender and that her account is closed. My mother, who died in 1999 aged 81, used to talk of the Warrenders. The family lived on Adsetts Street Grimesthorpe. I recall that June's dad, Mr Albert Warrender, had an Excesior motorbike similar to this in around 1950... https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=fCn35Lmg&id=FAAEBB7C0611A254F47354AB196CB2B8A2BE035A&thid=OIP.fCn35LmgeYUSDDGxDeuxXwE6DG&q=excelsior+motorcycles&simid=608005923155282201&selectedIndex=24&qpvt=excelsior+motorcycles&ajaxhist=0 Hope things are ok with June. Peter.
  9. Thanks for that input stpetre. I have in the past seen on online shops old taps stamped with any of Firth Brown, or Firth Brown Tools, or Speedicut. Here's an advert for Thos Firth and John Brown Ltd taps which shows that, contrary to my previous thoughts, they were indeed marketed and not used just internally. I dealt only with much bigger products when I was in Forgings Sales 1961 to 1964... https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im194411AE-Firth_Brown.jpg Further research shows that the public company Firth Brown Tools was formed in 1946 for the purpose of acquiring from Thos. Firth and John Brown Ltd., the tools dept., which had been established in around 1900. See here.... https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Firth_Brown Peter.
  10. Hi all, I recently acquired, shown below, a further two items to add to my small personal collection of Firth Brown memorabilia. The box would have contained ground thread taps, presumably in an insert that has since disappeared over the years. The tap shown was acquired separately and may not have been the same size as originally in the box. The items are marked Firth Brown and NOT marked Firth Brown TOOLS. I'm assuming that they would not have been marketed but used at Atlas works as shown on the box. Does anyone know which departments, if this is the case?? It's good to handle some good old FB items. https://photos.app.goo.gl/CNnSrdbHcvwLYV8R2 https://photos.app.goo.gl/1l3PS3l4QHQoWoJT2 https://photos.app.goo.gl/rlI70xsB23fmbEyi1 https://photos.app.goo.gl/QzIPop72fYhHlaMU2 Peter.
  11. Hi GOLDEN OLDIE, Re your last paragraph, I lived at Shiregreen between 1957 and 1966. Years later I was a Local Government Officer based at the Town Hall but occasionally in 1977 or 8 ish I would man the cash desks taking rent on a Friday Morning at the Housing Office on Bellhouse Road. Sometimes did Parson Cross.
  12. Hi Brian, The stamp mark in the middle of the three shows a date of 15 Feb 1954. It has the day and year in Arabic numerals but the month (middle one) in Roman. To add to my post number 643 and in particular to the buildings shown on Picture Sheffield, here are the same buildings which I snapped in 1990. Click on each pic to enlarge.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/1On7n14bTCcVSksc2 https://photos.app.goo.gl/KoJTh21Gopzl2cwx1 Here's a pic I snapped a few months ago of the rear of the President Buildings, behind Savile Street East. My car is standing on the spot where there was another building a few metres across a yard, accessed through 36 gate (the dark area to the left of the tree). I snapped the pic on a Sunday, hence no other cars. I first started work aged 15 in Feb 1959 at Firth Browns in the Progress and Planning Dept which was in that building, now long demolished. Just out of sight in the block on the pic, at a right angle, is a doorway to a corridor. This led to the post room where the envelope mentioned was franked by the ladies there just 5 years before I began work across the yard! This takes me right back to those times. Click on the pic to enlarge.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/UAGoYlC4DLMfKns22 Peter.
  13. Hi brian1941 and All, Below are pics of an old envelope which I have recently aquired for my personal collection of Firth Brown memorabilia. It would have been franked in the post room at Firth Browns Head office on Savile Street East on 15 Feb 1954. In the early '60s I used to dictate letters when I worked in Forgings Sales office, which was near to the post room. https://photos.app.goo.gl/qCzN6kcTyaVuhOwf2 https://photos.app.goo.gl/qIxLtrz0VJE2Atgk2 I'll add to this post later as I'm just coming to grips with Google pics Meanwhile, here are two links to Picture Sheffield showing the Head Offices snapped on 5 Aug 2005, as they are now, the President Buildings office park... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;c01487&prevUrl= http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;c01484&prevUrl= Peter.
  14. Hi All, Below is a link to a Picture Sheffield pic of Vulcan Road. I used to travel to my then girlfriends house in Bramley near Rotherham from Shiregreen in the early 1960s I would go down Jenkin Road on my Lambretta, along a short stretch of Meadowhall Road and then Weedon Street, Sheffield Road and then up Bawtry Road. I recall coming back via Vulcan Road for a change sometimes. Did it bear round to the left after the bridge on the pic onto what is now Meadow Hall Way and exit onto Meadow Hall Road or did it exit at Weedon Street from what is now Meadowhall Drive? I can't remember after all those years http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s27241&pos=26&action=zoom&id=29651 http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s27241&prevUrl= Regards, Peter.
  15. Yes they have been on before illuminati, however it's lovely to look at them again. Thanks, Peter.
  16. Hi Brian and All, Here's a link to a previous post. It's a bit fiddly but if you can pause this 1948 film at 1 minute 12 seconds, the hotel I mention can be seen at the junction of Saville Street East and Norroy Street. It's the Victoria which we have discussed in recent posts. It's just past the big clock on the opposite side of Saville Street. I couldn't remember the name at the time of my previous post. The big advertisement above the doorway says 'Liquor and Ales'. The brand name is too small to make out even when I use the zoom facility on my computer. https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11641916&postcount=595 Peter. ---------- Post added 07-09-2017 at 11:13 ---------- Hi KathS, Sorry I can't help and I hope someone responds with the information you are seeking. Firth Browns was a massive place with several thousand employees. Time has moved on and sadly only a few people respond to this thread now. All the best, Peter.
  17. I spent a good half hour glued to the screen. Absolutely fascinating! What an eyeopener and well presented. Peter.

  19. Hi Person6, You're very welcome. I know my post wasn't quite on your particular thread subject but thought you may find the connection interesting. Regards, Peter.
  20. Hi Person6, dabbott313 and All, Here, for convenience, is the Dinnington Heritage site you mention. On here are some buses belonging to Fosters Coaches which was founded by my wife's Great Grandfather in 1911....... http://dinningtonheritage.weebly.com/transport.html Also see this thread 'Fosters Coaches Dinnington' which my wife DawnHelen and I responded to on posts 2 and 3 initially..... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=11091384&highlight=fosters+buses#post11091384 Peter.
  21. Hi Mick, Thanks for your responce. Yes there are similarities between the photos and video, although my car is a 1956 Austin a30 snapped in 1966. The Rover in the '80s video is some 30 years younger than my car. How time flies eh? Incidentally, all the photos on my last few posts were of my dear late first wife. Peter.
  22. Hi Mick, Thanks for the Marty Wilde video. It takes me straight back to those times Regarding your question about 'St Rebor'. It was the name of Margaret's parents house on Church Lane in Bramley near Rotherham. It was on the house when they bought it in the 50s. I have wondered many times where it originally came from. The house was built in the 20s/30s and may have had the name for many years but her parents had no information. There is an old church at the bottom of the lane but not with the name in question. Here are a few more pics at St Rebor in the early 60s..... http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/peterlaurence/media/Margarets%20Albums%20075_zpsfldxxqja.jpg.html?sort=3&o=151# http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/peterlaurence/media/Margarets%20Albums%20074_zpspbeiskie.jpg.html?sort=3&o=152 http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/peterlaurence/media/Scan-111207-0008_zpsujq86syo.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/peterlaurence/media/Scan-111207-0007_zps0frirfvp.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1 Hope this subject is not too far off Thread but, however, it is about a young lad who's formative years were in Grimesthorpe from birth in 1943 until moving to Shiregreen in 1958 Peter.
  23. Hi Padders, Thankyou for your kind words. I'm sorry to hear of your sad loss. Best regards, Peter.
  24. Hi Mick, Here are some clearer close up photos in the early '60s of the young lady who became my dear late first wife. They always take me straight back to those times ..... http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh629/peterlaurence/Margaret%20in%20June%201962_zps19dybpb4.jpg http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh629/peterlaurence/Margarets%20Albums%20013_zpso4mzghjl.jpg http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh629/peterlaurence/PetersPhonedownload10Aug2014037_zps16c89e21.jpg http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh629/peterlaurence/Margarets%20Albums%20050_zpsmuntsnhp.jpg Peter.
