  1. Yes St Petre, The pic number is s19320 . The zoom is Copyright but I hope the page will come up below if you click on Searching Picture Sheffield. I believe the Crown was on the bottom right corner just out of pic....Searching Picture Sheffield
  2. Hi Jean, I would have loved a ride in the Austin Sheerline which I believe belonged to Dick Mellon. However Mr Turner (Pop) gave me a ride down to school once. He saw me when he was getting his Austin A40 Devon out at Firth Park. Here's a pic of the bookie's car in the same colour I saw as a child on Adsetts Street outside the Vic. in the early '50s..... 3. Here it is but no signs showing....Picture sheffield
  4. Would it be the Wellington you are thinking about which is opposite the bottom of Moss Street on the corner of Cleveland Street? Here's a link to a pic....Picture sheffield
  5. Could this be it?? https://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s20220&pos=16&action=zoom&id=22739
  6. Hi geotom and Phil_T. I agree that the negative was copied the wrong way round, No criticism of Phil_T intended as it's an easy thing to do if you are unsure!! Have just held a miirror to the photo and immediately realised that the Victoria Hotel would be just out of sight on the corner of Grimesthorpe Road, before the shops. There was only one zebra crossing on Carlisle Road. which confirms the location to me as I lived only yards away on Adsetts Street below and opposite the rear of the Vic. from birth in 1943 to 1958.
  7. Hello SueB54. My Dad used to take me fishing on a pond in the late '40s/early '50s which I recall was opposite the end of Osgathorpe Road across the junction with Barnsley Road. I've not been there for many years as don't live in Sheffield now. I understood it was used by employees of Firth Vickers where he worked. Here's a link to some pics of Osgathorpe House. The first three show a pond in the grounds of Osgathorpe House. I wonder if this is the same pond before Barnsley Road was laid down just beyond it??......https://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?&searchterms=osgathorpe+house&action=search&keywords=all%3BCONTAINS%3B%osgathorpe%%3BAND%3Ball%3BCONTAINS%3B%house%%3B&page=1#rowNumber0
  8. Hi Kevvy. It was nearly 40 years ago but, yes, that sounds like the right place. I seem to remember going around the back to deal with matters and being very happy with the work done. Many thanks!
  9. I think it was Walter Fox's where I had a sunroof fitted in my Ford Cortina around 1981/2. They had to cut a hole in the roof.
  10. Here's a link to pic from 23 Jan 1980 on Picture Sheffield site. https://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s38179&prevUrl=
  11. Hi gaz786. I should have mentioned that I left Grimesthorpe in 1958, 61 years ago, having lived on Adsetts Street since birth in 1943. The apparently shop front half way down Clevedon Street was still the same as on the pic. from as far back as my earliest memories. so I'm talking maybe 70 years ago. I remember the chip shop at the top corner too.
  12. Does anyone know if the house on Clevedon Street on the right past the van was once a shop. It has a gas lamp attached on a bracket to the wall near the doorway and what appeared to be a shop front can be seen just above and beyond the van. I lived on Adsetts Street from birth in 1943 and it always confused me. 13. I lived at number 5 from birth in 1943 until moving to Shiregreen in 1958.
  14. Hi Melanie3, just in case your uncle hasn't seen the film of motorcycle training mentioned earlier on this thread, here it is ….. http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/dear-sergeant-or-story-rough-riding-motorcycling-course Regards, Peter.
  15. Hi Melv, Just pointing out for future reference that the pic you posted, whilst correct, has the incorrect image number 20955. The correct image number should be s18376. I don't understand why this happened but no harm done.
  16. Yes, it is the Nelson from Norroy Street at the junction with Greystock Street to the right. Saville Street East is just out of shot left of pic. I had spotted the mistakes a while ago which also confused me at first. I have, over the years, advised Picture Sheffield of errors on several pics which they kindly corrected. Not wanting to overload them at the time I spotted this one I didn't report it, but will contact them online tomorrow.
  17. Hi Melv, I never went in the Victoria. Sorry but I can't find any answers to your questions on this occasion.
  18. Hi Meltman, You may have seen the pic below before. It was taken on 18 April '66 shortly before you started work in the building with the red doors, which can be seen right of pic with the Nelson attached. Then past Greystock Street the Victoria can be seen at the junction with Saville Street East. Part of Firth Brown Head Offices, where I previously worked from 1959 to 1963, are across Saville Street East........... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s18375&prevUrl= I finally left FB in Aug '66 for the second time, exactly a year after you started in the lab and photographic department. I had no idea what was behind the red doors, thought it was a garage. Nor of cutbacks in workforce either as hadn't noticed any changes in my department. Blissfully naivety of youth eh?
  19. St Petre, I have a hard back A4 size souvenir brochure issued by Firth Browns on the occasion of the visit of the Master Cutler and his Guests on April 8th 1954. It shows the history of John Brown who commenced business on his own account in 1837 and Thomas Firth and his two sons Mark and Thomas, who founded the firm of Thos Firth and Sons in 1842. In 1930 Thos Firth and Sons Ltd and the steel producing interests of John Brown and Co Ltd amalgamated to become Thos Firth and John Brown Ltd and the history of that Company is documented up to 1954, the date of publication. To throw some light on your question, near the end of the brochure a paragraph refering to 1954 states..... ''The works in Sheffield occupy a site approximately 1 mile long and 80 acres in extent, containing about two and a half million square feet of buildings in which some 6,000 people employ their recources.'' ---------- Post added 24-04-2018 at 12:47 ---------- Hi All, The two buildings pictured below have been discussed on here at length in the past, but I hadn't found these pics of them derelict before, snapped on 29 Oct 1985....... Lord Nelson PH from Norroy Street with Greystock Street on left...... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t07323&prevUrl= Victoria Hotel from Saville Street East with Norroy Street on right. I could see the building from the opposite side of Saville Street East when sitting at my desk in Forgings Sales Office at Firth Browns 1961 to 1963, although it was rather blackened and had chimneys at that time....(Norfolk Arms, the white building at junction with Princess Street, can be seen far left of pic)..... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t07321&prevUrl= ---------- Post added 24-04-2018 at 14:42 ---------- dp59, I understand that there have been a number of tragic incidents over the years involving cranes. Here's a previous post of mine, which you may have seen, about when I personally almost became a statistic...... https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11784418&postcount=728
  20. Hi jane2008, There were thousands of people working at Firth Brown's as it was a massive site. It was nigh on impossible to even see them all, but you may be lucky enough to get a result. Would you know what sort of work Bill did or a department name as this may stir some comments?? I wish you success with your search. Regards, Peter.
  21. Hi melv, Not much happening on this thread now Thanks for the clear pic. I have looked at the plaques many times over the years and dread the possibility of them being either stolen or vandalised. Yes it's sad to see things changing down there. I intend to have a look around next week when I call to see my daughter in Sheffield. Here's the Picture Sheffield photo taken on 5th Aug 2005...... http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=zoomWindow&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;c01427&prevUrl= All the best, Peter.
  22. Nice to hear your story fairthorny. I also used to sail my boat in there in the '50s. Like yourself, I now live 120 miles from Sheffield. I visit my family in Sheffield and occasionally look around the old places but not as often as I would like though.
  23. You're welcome John. The shops were very much like those at Firth Brown's further down the road on Saville Street East where I worked between 1959 and '66. As an office junior aged 15 I first had the privilege of experiencing those sights, sounds and heat as I walked through the shops with documents. Also had an overhead crane licence in 1965. Have you seen this film of Firth Brown's in 1957?.... http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/firth-brown-tour-works Peter.
  24. There are around 5 minutes of good quality sequence near the end of this 1963 drama film, with Sally Geeson, of inside ESC River Don Works and also outside at the junction of Brightside Lane, Hawke Street and Upwell Street. If you don't want to watch the full 55 mins.film, run it forwards to the sequence, which is between 48mins 50 secs in, to 54 mins, 20 secs...... https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-wings-of-mystery-1963-online
