Hi Jean, I would have loved a ride in the Austin Sheerline which I believe belonged to Dick Mellon. However Mr Turner (Pop) gave me a ride down to school once. He saw me when he was getting his Austin A40 Devon out at Firth Park. Here's a pic of the bookie's car in the same colour I saw as a child on Adsetts Street outside the Vic. in the early '50s..... Hi geotom and Phil_T. I agree that the negative was copied the wrong way round, No criticism of Phil_T intended as it's an easy thing to do if you are unsure!! Have just held a miirror to the photo and immediately realised that the Victoria Hotel would be just out of sight on the corner of Grimesthorpe Road, before the shops. There was only one zebra crossing on Carlisle Road. which confirms the location to me as I lived only yards away on Adsetts Street below and opposite the rear of the Vic. from birth in 1943 to 1958.

Hello SueB54. My Dad used to take me fishing on a pond in the late '40s/early '50s which I recall was opposite the end of Osgathorpe Road across the junction with Barnsley Road. I've not been there for many years as don't live in Sheffield now. I understood it was used by employees of Firth Vickers where he worked. Here's a link to some pics of Osgathorpe House. The first three show a pond in the grounds of Osgathorpe House. I think it was Walter Fox's where I had a sunroof fitted in my Ford Cortina around 1981/2. They had to cut a hole in the roof.

Hi gaz786. I should have mentioned that I left Grimesthorpe in 1958, 61 years ago, having lived on Adsetts Street since birth in 1943. The apparently shop front half way down Clevedon Street was still the same as on the pic. from as far back as my earliest memories. so I'm talking maybe 70 years ago. I remember the chip shop at the top corner too.

Does anyone know if the house on Clevedon Street on the right past the van was once a shop. It has a gas lamp attached on a bracket to the wall near the doorway and what appeared to be a shop front can be seen just above and beyond the van. I lived on Adsetts Street from birth in 1943 and it always confused me. Hi Melv, Just pointing out for future reference that the pic you posted, whilst correct, has the incorrect image number 20955. The correct image number should be s18376. I don't understand why this happened but no harm done.

Yes, it is the Nelson from Norroy Street at the junction with Greystock Street to the right. Saville Street East is just out of shot left of pic. I had spotted the mistakes a while ago which also confused me at first. I have, over the years, advised Picture Sheffield of errors on several pics which they kindly corrected. Not wanting to overload them at the time I spotted this one I didn't report it, but will contact them online tomorrow.

It was taken on 18 April '66 shortly before you started work in the building with the red doors, which can be seen right of pic with the Nelson attached. Then past Greystock Street the Victoria can be seen at the junction with Saville Street East. St Petre, I have a hard back A4 size souvenir brochure issued by Firth Browns on the occasion of the visit of the Master Cutler and his Guests on April 8th 1954. It shows the history of John Brown who commenced business on his own account in 1837 and Thomas Firth and his two sons Mark and Thomas, who founded the firm of Thos Firth and Sons in 1842. In 1930 Thos Firth and Sons Ltd and the steel producing interests of John Brown and Co Ltd amalgamated to become Thos Firth and John Brown Ltd and the history of that Company is documented up to 1954, the date of publication. To throw some light on your question, near the end of the brochure a paragraph refering to 1954 states..... Hi jane2008, There were thousands of people working at Firth Brown's as it was a massive site. It was nigh on impossible to even see them all, but you may be lucky enough to get a result. Nice to hear your story fairthorny. I also used to sail my boat in there in the '50s. Like yourself, I now live 120 miles from Sheffield. I visit my family in Sheffield and occasionally look around the old places but not as often as I would like though.

You're welcome John. The shops were very much like those at Firth Brown's further down the road on Saville Street East where I worked between 1959 and '66. As an office junior aged 15 I first had the privilege of experiencing those sights, sounds and heat as I walked through the shops with documents. Also had an overhead crane licence in 1965.
