  1. John Robert "JOE" Cocker and Dave Berry (real name Holgate Grundy). At the Black Swan (Mucky Duck) Snig Hill in the early 60's at the talent competitions before fame took them away. What great nights they were .I was a barman then. It was about 1962 or as soon as the Religious Idiots on the council deemed we were allowed live music in pubs I believe in preparation for the world cup in 1966 and the foreign income that would line their pockets
  2. I'm Supposed to be above that now. But nothing stops me going into the Kitchen and making myself a dripping sandwich or two with salt on. Don't I love them they remind me of wonderful memories of my childhood and youth. How I miss dear old Sheffield and my mates in Martin Street. My family had nothing then but wonderful neighbours and friends,!940's & 1950's God bless you Dripping Sandwich, Tripe, Black pudding, Chicling & Bag , Cow heel. I still travel on business even at 75, haven't lived there for 40years, but still bless Sheffield. ALWAYS A SHEFFIELDER
  3. Of Interest Port Mahon is the port of the capital of Minorca Mahon. It is the second largest deepwater naval port in the world after Pearl Harbour and was British up to the end of the 19th Century. Nelson used it for his major battles in the Mediterraean. It is pronounced in Minorca _which is mainly basque speaking as Porto Mao
  4. Perhaps it may help if you initially looked in the area of Ilkeston 1790- 1830. The Lees were famous coach builders and also into joinery and engineering http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Pigot1828/index.html
  5. To quote The name “Ponderosa” was originally an informal name given by local children, it is now the accepted title and is recognised by the local council. Along with Weston Park and Crookes Valley Park it is one of the three “Crookesmoor Parks”. It was initially referred to as the tip. End Quote Look it up on Wikipedia "Ponderossa area of Sheffield" Things change very Quickly I was born in Martin St but of interest pre 1900s it was called King St. My father used to call the area around Watery Lane and hammond Hill "Port Mahon" and if you query this on the internet you will find him right.
  6. My first recollection was in 1946 my dad taking me 2 or 3 times a week to learn me to swim. My first recollection of the slipper baths was luxury after the tin bath in front of the fire with 2 brothers. I was about 8 (1948). The slipper baths were upstairs. You took your own towell and soap.and there was a wooden board on the floor I now assume was for hygene as it was washed consistently. I took a unofficial job which paid me 3p (old Pence)for 2days of 4 Hours work cleaning the baths after people.( I was 10 at that time) They were suppose to clean the baths themselves but people were very lazy. I used the slipper baths at least twice a week up to 1956 then we were relocated from Martin St.I used the connected library all the time and my mam used the washhouse in Danielle St. As of interest the area had other things going for it . The cinema (The Oxford) 200yards away at the junction of Addy St Crookesmoor Rd(Lane it was called but actually crookemoor road bottom) and Springvale rd. The snooker Hall next door . The old nurses home and tennis courts in Oxford St. I grew up there and enjoyed the baths . Note the Swimming baths had the showers not the slipper baths just a cold hose pipe used by me and probably others to clean the baths. At the time there was 6 Baths in use and I believe they might have increased it after 1956
  7. I can give you a little history about the courts I dont know when they reverted back to martin street again but my mate Johny Innocent lived with his family in 1941- 1956 in 1 court House 2 Martin St. My other mates families lived at 2 Martin st (Tony Hornby) and 4 Martin Street (Brian Hale) There was a lane that went up the side of 2 Martin Street up to the adelphi street courts " Martin st court was back of 2 4 6 8 Martin St You can see the court lane on the photo of martin street above mails. It shows 2 4 6 8 Martin St then Adelphi Street on right Lots of bomb damage in that area My happy hunting grounds as a kid.Theres a photo in the Sheffield Picture Archives of Watery Lane
  8. Tenuous Steel I think was on Morpeth Street Definitely not Martin Street.
  9. I have a map of the Sheffield Parishes of approx 1870's which shows St Philips Parish. The district around watery Lane Adelphi St and Wentworth St as Port Mahon and Martin Street was called King St and there was no Martin Lane. Martin Lane used to run parallel to Martin St From Adelphi St top to Burlington St also parallel to Oxford St
  10. 1952-1957 I hated it. I was not a rebel but I averaged 4-6 strokes of the strap a week. I was forever in detention and twice a week got you strapped. Many a time the whole class was put in detention for no reason other than for talking too loud. The brothers along with normal schools used to run reform schools and others this I believe was where the disciplinary regime came from. As anyone else done the Saturday morning garden duties because of detention excess in a week. Leonard was a pussy Wilfred who became Headmaster was a Smiling Masochist. Note I didnt use the prefix brother as they didnt deserve it
  11. Bloody Hell its a small world ask if your wive or her family remember the Kennys at No 14 the Mills at No 16 or the Lees at No 18. My brothers were friends with her brothers
  12. Wrong Martin Street was NOT pulled down in 1956 . I lived at no 18 and the development of the Street started acoss the street from us with the pulling down of the adelphi pub in 1955 because I lost my mate Tony Martin when they moved his father was the landlord. A lot of Martin Street was still up whn we moved in 1959.
  13. You have the wrong Number I was born in Martin St at number 18 in 1941at the bottom end near the Hospital. the shop it was in the 160's at the top end of martin st near the tip. I remember the 6 shops in the Street Pub called the Adelphi at the corner of adelphi Street (approx No 13) Chip Shop and Whites greenGrocery Shop both sides of Whites entry where the horse and cart were kept halfway between Adelphi Street and burlington Street (Aprox Numbers 37 & 39 ). Two Shops were at the opposite corners of Burlington Street and Martin Street on the Evens side Right hand side looking up from hospital (Royal Infirmary). First one called Wilsons Both Off Liscence. Your Grandparents Cig shop same side on corner of bond street used to pass it on way to Tip & Park. Can remember it I think called Thommo's dont know if it was still open in the late 1940's . My mother was born at 193 Martin St and My Father At 36. My mothers parents died before I was born so I dont remember much about the top end of Martin st but i,m sure she called it thommo,s. My other went to Crookesmoor Starting there in 1921 and most of my Dads friends did too. Look in the Sheffield Photo Archives for the Streets. Look at Bond St as Martin St shows bottom end only The
