The Heart Of The City Development
northernboy replied to SheffieldForum's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I hope it’s a success. They must be confident that it will attract plenty of customers, given the size of the food hall. Definitely not somewhere I would go to eat, but I wish them well. -
I’m surprised that any WH Smith branches outside stations and airports make any money to be honest, not sure why they keep them open.

She’ll be sadly missed… shame she’s not going for about 18 months, but I expect their new-ish chief executive will be making most of the decisions in the meantime.

New Shop Opening - Sostrene Grene
northernboy replied to Bargepole23's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
The Monki logo means they are destined to always be called MONKL, a bit like the old Gwhat Shop - remember them? I think they were behind Debenhams roughly where the Light cinema is? -
Urban Splash then. Hope they make a success of it. https://sheffnews.com/news/cole-brothers-urban-splash-named-as-preferred-bidders-with-plans-to-create-exciting-mixed-use-space/

South Yorkshire Bus Service Needs Improvement
northernboy replied to 1295galaxy's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
This page hasn’t been updated since last September, but it does seem to show reliability getting worse each year https://travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/newsupdates/bus-punctuality#Sheffield -
I bet someone still stood up and shut the window!

South Yorkshire Bus Service Needs Improvement

The shelter at that location was demolished when a car crashed into it. I was hoping the pole was a temporary replacement until a new shelter could be installed, but it’s looking more like it will be permanent. -

That’s £2.50 until November 2024 by the way, not just for one month -
Former Farmfoods On Chesterfield Road
northernboy replied to sheff utd's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
There is one in Nottingham, but I really don’t think we’ll be getting one on Woodseats, partly due to the large Waitrose (one of their biggest stores in the country), and partly due to how badly they are doing financially. Plus, the “Little Waitrose” prices are even higher than the main stores! -
When Did The City Centre Lose Its Soul?
northernboy replied to Irene Swaine's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I was thinking earlier about the plan to provide free Wi-Fi throughout the city centre. There’s still a website about this but it doesn’t seem to have been updated since 2019. I know they started to install the access points and there was a limited service in a very small area, does anyone know if it’s still going? -
Shipping Containers Coming To Fargate
northernboy replied to smithy266's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
The original costs of this project (ÂŁ300,000 later increased to ÂŁ446,000) were met from central government funding via the "Get Britain Building" fund. Has it been stated whether the latest costs will also be met by central government or will the council have to make up the difference? (I know it all comes out of our taxes in one way or another, but local council funds seem to be particularly squeezed at the moment.) -

Here's the latest version from The Star : https://www.thestar.co.uk/business/container-park-sheffield-dismantling-costs-shoot-up-to-ps95000-due-to-time-pressures-4030530?fbclid=IwAR0a9Diin3_cfLfWwRg_NmAYcUW3R5nk4LJwOYZ72CLRhsRDHfqprhbxlBw The original operator and the council have "fallen out"! I bet the "secure brownfield site" where the council plan to store them ends up being the old Norton Nurseries, which should technically be part of Graves Park but is used as a general dumping ground instead. -
Can anyone confirm whether B road is open or closed? So far we’ve got one for for definitely open and one for definitely closed. I phoned the Hallamshire reception number and they didn’t know (?!) My mum’s got to go there on Friday, she’s getting on a bit and it would help her to know in advance.

That BBC report is very interesting. Paying for an electricity supply that they didn’t know had been removed? The cost of providing generators due to the lack of power. The upstairs bar and terrace will not open. Even more of a shambles than I thought! -
Was it like those lorries that used to collect our home recycling, with two separate compartments within the lorry?

I know the original construction was paid for from central government funding, but does anybody know whether this funding includes the cost of relocation? -

The Star are now suggesting that the containers could be dismantled in the new year. I wonder if it will actually open before it closes... -

When Do The Sheffield Lights Switch On?
northernboy replied to bassett one's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
There is an “event” on Facebook for 15th - 17th November, which looks fairly official, but as that is Tuesday to Thursday it seems a bit unlikely.
