  1. I was born in 67 and went to Standhouse in the 70's before being transferred to Prince Edwards. I remember the headteacher was called Mrs Bradley or something similiar. I also remember a teacher called Miss Paw and I remember Mrs Gow. I am trying to remember the nursery teacher but just cant picture her. Unfortunately I can not access the photos but will keep trying. I remember being at SHS when they had a wendy house delivered and it was in the central quad area. We all had a rota of when it was or turn to play! I remember all the kids when it was there birthday would get called out in assembly-sadly I was never called as my birthday was in the summer holidays. I remember the dinner ladies banging on the tables to get some order at lunch times-I was petrified and remember wetting myself the first time I stayed for dinners when they did this. The nurse put me some navy knickers on and gave me a wagon wheel-it then became a regular event!! Still like wagon wheels to this day!! ha ha The song I always remember was a firm favourite was 'The Golden Cockeril crows in the morning, wake up children, welcome the day!!' We used to take a penny or 5p in on a monday and cue up outside the office to pay it into a savings bank! Dinner money was 12p per day and 60p per week. A bag of chips cost 2 and a half pence from Hagueys. Crazy what u remember eh?? mumsy

  3. Hi there OWLSCHICK-I sure do remember the shop-its where I spent half my money for the church collection!! SHe would do lololies that had a 'get one free' at the end of the stick and we would rush back to get a free one quickly. I remember the 'Hedges' lived above the shop-did it turn into a bookies or something? Also there were 2 electrical boxes on the end of Cary Rd opposite the shop and we would climb on these to sit and eat the lollies!!! I remember the newagents on the side of Wulfric nearest the manor hotel-they had a halfpenny, penny and twopenny tray. We would ask for one tray to look at then ask for another-whilst newsagent turned to get next tray we would try and pinch a chew before they turned back-we always got caught!! There was also a little wool shop next door-I remember mum taking me to buy a wooden cotton bobbin just so I could do some french knitting on it and was so disappointed to find all her bobbins were plastic! I remember Dr Valerio our family doctor on Prince of Wales Rd-would tell me off for biting my nails and always asked my mum how many cigarettes she smoked. I remember the waiting room was on the right and waiting your turn to be called in to the surgery room on the left. He had a massive book case full of books (of course!!) and a glass jar on his desk full of cotton wool balls. Was he scottish-I remember he had an accent. Does anyone else remember Dr Valerio? mumsy

  11. Hi there, the 'Roberts' lived on the next block to us next to the 'Turners' (middle house) we lived at the opposite end of Grahams row, opposite the 'Prouds' and diagonal to the 'Walkers'-sorry to hear about your family losses. Are you Dylans mum then? I remember Dylan was mad on starwars but was younger than me. Our surname was/is 'Daniel' Mark, Tracey and Nicola (you were right-2 girls!) Do u remember we used to have a pleasure boat on the drive? Not many people had one of those on the drive and a jag on the manor!!! Best wishes mumsy!
  12. Hi there Bushbaby, I cant remember names of family who lived on Fitzhubert Rd side of Betty Pugh but I know I went round there to play!!!! At the Wulfric Rd side of Betty Pugh lived Graham Bridges and his family-I lived at the other end of the block from Graham-he was good friends as kids with my brother Mark-they once set up a telehone system with tin cans n strings between there bedrooms-or tried to ha ha!!!! I remember Mrs Pugh was also my dinner lady at Prince Edwards. I remember her kitchen once on fire re chip pan! The only staff names I remember in the post office was a lady called Lyn-who had a baby in the 70's. I vaguely remember the Bartholemews and remember something happening to a son(?) We left in 79 but can still remember quite a few names. I remember an old lady who lived on Fitzhubert (opposite house side of Bettys) who always made kids ice lollies in summer and she would come to her gate with handfuls of lollies. Can u remember any other names? mumsy!!

  14. I lived on the Manor-Wulfric Road till 79 and went to Stand House and Prince Edwards Schools. I remember playing in the church grounds-St Swithuns and Rev Lister and his wife and 2 children-Charles and Rebecca. Also playing on the 'plantation' on the Fairleigh and digging up the tar from the roadside with lollypop sticks on hot summer days! Rolling in tractor inner tubes down the middle of the roundabout by Hagues chip shop and 'Carrie Anns' dress shop (Esters) and climbing the trees on the roundabout again to escape the park patrol (he had a fast bike but could not climb trees!) I remember 'back knacking' on Wulfric Rd/Cary Rd/ Queen Mary Rd and Fitzhubert Rd I remember following the coal man to pick up coal to make a hopskotch and the Alpine Man who would deliver pop. The 'manor monsters' at St Swithums in the 6 weeks hols with kite making and flying then at Chatsworth. I remember the original St Swithuns church and calling in at the sweet shop to spend half my donation for church on penny lollies or rainbow drops-truth be known was probably only reason I occassionally went!! What memories do you have?? I have all these and am only 41!!!
  15. I remember at Prince Edwards (Manor) they were named after 4 castles in Wales...Conway, Caerarvon, Caephilly and Harlech...they are the only thing I learnt about Wales!! When changing schools to Westways at Crookes they were named after reservoirs....Derwent, Strines, Ladybower and Redmires.

  17. Hi Poppypoppy, My Mum lived at number 5-the 'Shones' Alan, Barbara, Janet and Judith. My aunty (Barbara) also lived opposite the top of Linton Rd when I was a child (70's) but cant remember number possible 43/5/7. She lived there with her first husband and family. I have a friend who lives at 51 so there is at least one family still there!! Penny Bustin-newsreader used to live opposte my Nan. The only neighbours names I can remember were the 'Legats' at number 7. Dont know if any of these names ring a bell, mumsy
  18. She was still 'knocking about' in the early 80's and I would guess she was probably in her 60's then if not older. She's not been there now for many years. I remember the house looked neglected with threads at the windows for curtains. The houses were modernised in 85/86 and think hers was left unmodernised. I can still visualise the old wooden framed windows and the garden looking so unkempt!
  19. Hello Hockey mum..glad u cleared that up and u r the youngest aren't u??!! Nice memories of your Dad here, wonder what he would have made of it, nx
  20. My Mum lived on Wayland Rd till the early 60's. She had 2 sisters and a brother. (Mum was youngest) My Nan lived there till early 80's. Her house was bombed twice in the war. I've been back several times and drive on there occassionally when cutting thro the estate.
  21. There was a lady who lived in the bottom house on Northfield Road who walked around with her scarf, coat and bags all day. She would talk to herself as she walked up and down Crookes. Used to scare us all as kids, dont know what happened to her tho, sorry. Not sure if this is the same lady.

  24. I went to Westways in 1979-Mr Coldwells class (3rd year) Followed by Mr Hughes class in the 4th year. He left at Xmas to become head at Hillsboro, Parkside Road (I think) and that is when Kevan Ellison came to the school. I remember seeing his death in the paper, he was a good teacher, RIP. I also remember Mrs Marshall who had a mixed class and taught yrs 3/4 and took us for music-her favourite song for us to sing was 'Amazing Grace' Miss Farrar taught the other year 3 class and Mr Davenport the other year 4 class. Mr Hides was head teacher whilst I was at the school. I remember Miss Tindall trying to teach us sex education in yr 4-hilarious!! I remember Miss Ambler used to teach craft and home economics. I used to live on Northfield Road and remember many school friends tho have little if any contact now.
