  1. Not quite as important, expensive or annoying, but I live near Hunters Bar and we had the remaining lead pipes stolen from our old outhouse the other night! Resulted in a very very soggy back garden and frantic calls to emergency plumbers and Yorkshire Water! The police told me there was a lot of lead theft going on at the moment, it seems people will take any amount, no matter how small! So keep an eye on your outhouses!
  2. 1877 is lovely! The interior is gorgeous and the treatments are really nice too.
  3. Oh my lord, horrible to hear someone died. Lots of new students have moved in today too... I assured a guy I saw that this doesn't happen every day...
  4. Well, the people outside the Hanover seem unperturbed! It was probably Havelock Street, not Hanover Street.
  5. My boyfriend texted me to tell me someone had been shot on Hanover Street, but no more info...
  6. It always is when I go down to Sharp's, the greengrocer's next door. I remember being heckled by some horrible chav women one afternoon a while back. >
  7. It's interesting, but I've just been up to Holmfirth Picturedrome to see a film (Ladies in Lavender, in fact) and the place was *packed*! It's a proper old picture-house, and the building is, I imagine, pretty much unchanged, but now they have a little bar at the back so you can have a pint while you watch the film! Other cities and towns have small cinemas - Leeds has two, and they show lots of arthouse-y things at at least one of them; even Penistone has a cinema. I definitely think that some of the old cinemas in Sheffield would be a success if they re-opened. I think Abbeydale is the nicest building out of the ones I've seen (thanks for the link, Hal9001!), but the location probably isn't the best for success in this day and age. Which do people think would be the best option, to re-open?
  8. Devonshire Street is the continuation of Division Street - it runs along the top side of Dev Green. The Mashouse looks delicious! 4 sorts of mash on the menu! :9 English wine! I love English wine. I've not been yet, but I plan to at the earliest available opportunity. Prices seem pretty reasonable too, and the breakfast menu looks delicious as well. *grin* I'm just enthusiastic because it's the first time I've seen an *English* restaurant - too often English food gets put down, but it's actually very tasty if done well. I look forward to finding out if the Mashouse does this. ^_~
  9. There's one on Ecclesall Road, opposite the Cafe Rouge. Don't know how good it is though!
  10. There used to be some amazing graffiti in the subway at Furnival Square - I used to see it from the bus when coming up Arundel gate. But that got filled in a few years back. I always regret not taking any pics, but if anyone has any, I'd love to see them... My personal opinion on graffiti seems similar to others who've posted - the really artistic stuff is definitely worthwhile, and, whilst I won't dispute that it is vandalism in some form, I'd be temoted to argue that it's a victimless crime because it in fact covers up some of the uglier concrete surfaces of the city.
  11. Miggy, where did you get the info from? Didn't see anything on the Offbeat website, or the uni website... I'd love to go if it's on, but I was sure it's only on once a year, usually around November. I'd love to be proved wrong! (PMed you but your box is full! )
  12. It's a good old fashioned indie/Britpop night at Sheffield Union. It's run by the Offbeat people, but it's more mainstream (and less indier-than-thou *cough* )
  13. I thought it only happened once a year? I've been for the past three years running... It's my favourite night out in Sheffield!
  14. That does seem a little churlish - to not even use it, even when it's provided right on your doorstep... but I'm sure nothing I can say is going to change your mind, so I'll leave it now.
  15. There used to be a place at the top of London Road - dunno if it's still in business... Sorry I can't be more help!
