  1. It's been a while since this post has been added to, but I thought I would contribute because I only found out about the demolition of the Hydra Clarkson building when I saw the massive demolition sign go up. I have written to English Heritage and 20th century Society about the building, but no help there - only EH has replied and basically said it's not by architect WJ Hale as believed, it's from 1949 so therefore the only point of interest is that it's from immediately post-war period... Anyway, today I noticed that at the Zest gym/library there is a 'consultation' board up - only until 26th March, where there is a document which you can give feedback on - a questionnaire which goes back to the council. The doc can also be viewed here http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/planning-and-city-development/planning-documents/background-reports/penistone-road-gateway-action-plan Embarrassingly, in Chapter 4 they say this "4. Enhance historic buildings and their settings; There are a number of important historic buildings and structures along the corridor most notably: • Hillsborough Park • St John the Baptist Church • The White Building (formally Hydra Tools) • Hillsborough Barracks • The Old Crown • Globe Works They should be retained and new developments will enhance their character, appearance or setting wherever possible." So I have filled in the questionnaire saying that it is rather foolish to document this as their planning strategy when they have already approved demolition of one of these buildings, to be replaced with a hideous industrial shed like all the others! If anyone has a spare minute, give them your feedback too!
  2. For kitchen fitting and joinery I would recommend JB Property Maintenance 0114 2555827 or 0781 471 3636 I have recently had James to fit our new Ikea kitchen and am so pleased with the job he's done. It looks even better than we'd hoped for even with some difficulties being thrown in by funny angles (end terrace!) and strange Ikea conventions. The job was done quickly, tidily and with great professionalism - James turned up when he said he would and went out of his way to get us extra materials/fittings. The kitchen has been fitted to such a high standard that it looks considerably more expensive than it was - the wooden worktops have excellent joints, all doors and drawers are perfectly fitted and the little details are worked out perfectly. James was keeping me updated with his progress throughout the job which was great, especially for such major work to the house. It's amazing to think that we could have shelled out £13,000 at somewhere like moben and I honestly think ours looks a lot better and we've definitely had a better service from James. I would recommend JB Property to anyone, and would be happy to email photos to anyone interested.
  3. I feel as though I should defend Halo for anyone you reads this post - alongside white rose's post of course. I have my hair cut by Emily and have had highlights done by Billie and the service has always been fantastic - unlike other hair stylists I've been to, Emily always does what she thinks will be best for my hair (used to be difficult to manage - long, thick and curly) rather than what's necessarily in fashion or a whim I'm having at the moment! She is a really lovely person too and I feel like I'm being properly pampered whenever I go there.. I don't know if maybe it's changed a lot in the past couple of years but I've been going for probably 2 years now and it's always been great.
  4. Hi, I am looking for any recommendations, or quotes from tradesmen, for the fitting of a new Ikea kitchen to a very high standard. This will include: -dismantling of current units (3 base units, 2 wall, worktops) -taking tiles off two walls (from units to ceiling!) and smoothing walls -installation of new floor covering - laminate or tile, inc. underlay -installation of extra plug sockets and master switch for electric oven -installation of new Ikea kitchen (3-4 base units, 2 wall units, integrated oven and hob unit, hood, solid wood worktop, new sink, plumbing in new mixer tap, splashbacks) I will supply the kitchen units, worktop, sink, tap, splashback and flooring surface so am just looking for labour costs. If it would make it considerably cheaper I will be able to assemble the Ikea units for installation to wall/floor. If you have a recommendation, any photos of work done would be really appreciated. If you would like to give me a quote, please PM me or reply to this post - again, photos/references would be helpful. Thanks
  5. I'm currently planning to open a small fashion boutique in Sheffield S11, and am interested to know whether women of 18-30 will be changing their shopping habits, with regards to clothing, due to the credit crunch. I am thinking that ladies in this area, and within this age group may be less likely to have children than women of 30+, possibly might not yet have a mortgage - so might be less affected by increasing prices? I have read research to suggest that women are starting to move away from budget shops such as Primark, New Look, Matalan, and starting to buy fewer but more expensive pieces that will last longer and are more unusual. If you have any thoughts on this, or on what you would like to see in terms of fashion retail in the Ecclesall Road area, please reply! Or you can PM me. Thanks a lot
  6. If only this was an option, but sadly they haven't built the shops I work at round the corner from where I live yet. thanks for all the reasons - they've put my mind at rest, just have to see how I get on tonight as start at 6 again! I get the impression that Fridays at Christmas time are a nightmare though!
  7. Those cameras seem like a great idea - thanks for that. Didn't even know they existed! I have considered getting the tram but getting on it from Meadowhall at 10 pm (when work finishes) or even later might be a bit dodgy - seems to be the time when undesirables like to take a ride! Going part way might be a decent compromise though. I've considered turning right at the roundabout and going past the arena/retail park as that lane onto the roundabout didn't seem as clogged.. might try it for tonight's shift and see how I get on. It's a nightmare for people who have to work - I can't believe it would be worth getting in that queue for Christmas shopping! Abd Meadowhall is crap for anything other than clothes/perfume anyway..
  8. It took me and hour and a half to get to meadowhall from S6 last night - the roads were rammed all the way up past the roundabout that takes you to centertainment etc.. My shift at work started at 6 and I left at 5 to get there early - only to arrive at 6.30! The traffic was all gone by 6.45 Was this because of Jordan's appearance at the perfume counter? Or just because people are going to MHall on their way home from work? Anyway, I'm going to have to leave at 4 for my 6pm start tonight and will probably get there an hour early! Is there anyway of beating this hellish traffic, because if not I'll have to quit both my jobs at MHall - don't have this much time to spend driving 2 miles. Any shortcuts that take you away from Carbrook/the Wicker/ that roundabout/ the bit that goes past meadowhall to get onto M1? Saying that though, it took me 20 mins to get round the carpark to the Central Area! If this is all because of Christmas I'm going to become the ultimate scrooge
  9. My friend has got some Chinese Dwarfs today - so cute! - from Pets and Home, heeley retail park. Two boys. From what I've read it seems to be OK to keep two of the same breed if they come from the same litter, which these do - they seemed to like each other. The shop also had some Russians and Roborovskis, which are even cuter in real life!! But I think I wouldn't want to get a Roborovski to play with because they are really fast? Does anyone have any experience mixing Roborovskis with other Russians? - I've read that it's ok to mix them because they're both Russian breeds... But I don't want to use them as guinea pigs (ha ha). Cheers
  10. Is there anywhere in Sheffield that sells Roborovski hamsters? We're thinking of getting a dwarf hamster and these look so adorable! Thanks
  11. How naive, someone obviously hasn't read the paper recently. How do your explain all of someone's birthday cards being opened I wonder?
  12. It's a known fact that the Post Office is full oif criminals - I once had a whole batch of letters I sent go missing - all of them! Anything that looks remotely attractive, i.e. birthday card, will be opened for cash; and anything that looks remotely boring will be stolen in case it's a new passport to sell off! As for the pig**** comment, I find that quite amusing evidently coming from a postman.
  13. Hmm that's strange then - he must just have an identical twin brother! In reference to your earlier post; the only reason why Saturday is a lighter day must be down to the post office not being bothered to sort it/deliver it all in time as I hardly think it's likely that people would choose not to post their letters on Thursday/Friday so not to 'stress out' the postman on Saturdays! Regardless of that, there are 24 flats in our building so you'd think at least one person would get one piece of post on a Saturday, but they never do - odd that.
  14. Glad it's not just me then. Maybe if all of us suffering from missing post phoned up the Post Office they might actually care. My family live in the countryside, in the county of Rutland (where there isn't even a city) and they get theirs by 9 o'clock everyday; I think the same man does an area of several villages. Ironic eh?
