  1. Something Nasty in the Woodshed Live at The Greystones Greystones Road, Sheffield Saturday 21st May 2011 You have never seen folk like this! The outstanding Something Nasty in the Woodshed play their debut headline show in Sheffield this May at The Greystones... One of the finest bands on the folk-festival circuit combine highland bagpipes, mandolin, guitars and drums to create a titanic mix of traditional and original songs, delivered with style and downright tap-along, sing-along - heck, jump-along - exuberance. Something Nasty in the Woodshed deliver a potent mix of drum-driven electric and acoustic instruments with the emotive sound of the great highland bagpipes. Taking the jigs and reels from the attic of their ancestors and plugging them into the national grid, and a mix of self-penned storybook songs and revamped traditional themes, their gut-punching sound has captivated audiences wherever they have played. Their following grows and grows and by the end of each set the audience is often louder than the band! One of the finest festival bands on the folk-festival circuit play their Sheffield headlining debut at The Greystones. “The band's pulsing electric sound gets one of the main stage's biggest reactions of the day…" Spiral Earth (UK Folk & Roots Ely Festival) "What a night! They helped make that Sunday night the best night in Moor & Coast history." Chris Roper (Moor & Coast Festival) "Something Nasty blew the audience away with their high energy folk-rock performance and by popular demand, are invited back next year." Mike Kirrage (Gate to Southwell Festival) Entry to a show as good as this for the price of a couple of pints? You've got to be kidding... Not to be missed! Tickets are £6 and are available from: OVER-THE-BAR: The Greystones, Greystones Road, Sheffield PHONE: 7094 136 1510 (to arrange tickets by phone) ONLINE: http://www.cliffordevents.co.uk

Last night, Monday 1 February, in London DICK GAUGHAN was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ceremony. Dick received his award from Neil Finn of the band Crowded House who apparently had flown from New Zealand just to do this! Remarkable. This was quite a glittering event, full of celebs, journalist, performers, club, concert, arts centre, and festival organisers - a veritable gamut of British folk/roots music (British 'cos of course this is event organised by the British Broadcasting Corporation's "Folk On Two" radio programme, hosted by Mike Harding). You can hear the whole thing on Thursday 4 February at 7pm-8:30pm. See other award winners at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/folk-awards-2010/nominees/. AFAIK, Dick Gaughan is the only performer to be similarly honoured in Scotland and south of the Border. He adds this new award to being inducted into the Scots Trad Music Hall of Fame in Deccember 2009. Now, that is remarkable!

  14. PRESS RELEASE One of Britain’s finest acoustic performers, worldwide-acclaimed Scottish folk singer Dick Gaughan returns to Sheffield for an intimate concert at St Mary's Church and Community Centre on Friday 19th February 2010. Gaughan, who was recently inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame, is no stranger to Sheffield and past concerts include a rousing sold-out performance at the Raise Your Banners Festival in 2001. This concert is Dick Gaughan’s first Sheffield appearance for several years. The stunning and unique setting for his concert is the nave of St Mary’s Church, a first for the Sheffield landmark and pioneering community centre. Dick Gaughan has an affinity with the people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire. A staunch socialist – Gaughan describes himself as a working class artist and activist - he was a vocal and active supporter of the striking miners during the 1984-85 dispute. Organiser of the Leith Miners Support Group, Gaughan also played benefit concerts across the country during and after the strike. As well as outstanding versions of traditional songs and music, Gaughan’s 35 year+ catalogue reflects his empathy with working people and his uncompromising commentary on social injustice. ‘You go home from a Dick Gaughan session feeling exhilarated’ writes Alastair Clark of The Scotsman, ‘not just at the wonderful skills of the most potent singer ever… not just at the astonishingly fluent and explosively eloquent guitar playing, but by the sense of the stark exposition of wrong and the tremulously argued legitimacy of right.’ Dick Gaughan has been away from Sheffield too long. When he plays his February concert he will return to a city and audience he understands and empathises with. It will be an outstanding performance and a welcome return. Details Dick Gaughan appears at St Mary's Church and Community Centre, Bramall Lane, Sheffield, S2 4QZ, on Friday February 19th 2010 Doors open at 7.30 pm, showtime at 8.00pm, fully licensed bar. 16. Just a quick update from Dick Gaughan's website which was posted today: When I finally get back home after schlepping around all over the Northern Hemisphere, my agent John Barrow informs me that I am to be inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. My first thought is "Oh ****e, being inducted into Halls of Fame can often mean people think that either you're over the hill and past it or that you're about to drop dead." Then I think "Stop being so bloody curmudgeonly for once in your life, Gaughan, they're saying that they think you've done something useful in some way or other at some time so stop being a divvie." This will be a great concert... an outstanding performer in the beautiful setting of St Mary's Church, not your average pub gig, and definitely not to be missed! Dick has already played two sell out concerts on his Autumn tour so think about booking early. Oh, and tickets would make a great Christmas present!
