Thanks to all for taking the time to read/post. Turns out the ATM is not maintained by a branch but by a third party. The branch were not interested in taking the cash and suggested I keep it! Seems the only way of identifying the account that the money was debited from is to look at the 'till roll' inside the machine. So I will contact the third party and see what they can do.

I went to use a cash machine earlier today and there was an amount of cash left behind by the previous user. I realise in hindsight that I should have just let the machine swallow it back in but I expected someone to come straight back and collect it. If it's yours please contact me with the location, amount and approximate time and I'll get it returned to you. I have contacted the bank that owns the machine and they have advised me to hand it into a branch, which I will do tomorrow if no one claims it before then. Thanks.
