  1. We live not far from there but not in Ridgeway itself. Is it worth trying to contact her by post first?
  2. It tends to be a couple of pounds cheaper per item, but there will probably be huge queues at this time of year so allow a lot of time! Unless you're buying for several children, I would be inclined to say it isn't worth the hassle of travelling for an hour, so try online if available. I buy the jumpers and cardigans and find they do wash well and don't need any ironing (always a bonus!). Also I only buy items with a logo from there, the non-logo stuff I get from Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, John Lewis etc.
  3. They are cutting down a lot of trees up in Gleadless and I too was sad that it was just at blossoming time. However, they have only taken a selection and are beginning to replace them (a sapling is just as good in my view, better than no tree!). Also the pavements where they are removing them from are horrendous, and my children regularly trip on their way to school, not to mention how the elderly manage, so I can see the reasons for doing it. The trees are being replaced, so I really don't see the reason for such uproar. It's not like they're going into the woods and chopping trees down for the sake of it. I love the trees in Sheffield as much as anyone else, but if they are becoming problematic then I am all for sorting things out in the long term.
  4. Yes I thought the barriers idea had been thrown out, so I'm not sure how they are allowed to do this? What are they afraid of - if the conductors check tickets on the trains then there is no chance of anyone not paying? Personally I have walked through the station when working over at Hallam for a few weeks, and I often stopped to buy a sandwich or something on my way through, so surely this is benefiting the businesses there?
  5. I have found that the one up Mansfield Road to Manor Top has massively improved the morning commute - saves about 5 mins of queuing which is valuable when I have to drop kids off at school first! However, I have regularly seen buses driving up the right hand side of the road and therefore not using the bus lane and bus traffic lights at the top - are the bus drivers just thick or is there a reason for doing this?! I agree the one at the bottom of City Road is stupid after about 9.30am - is there even a camera there? I have been caught by the one on Queens Road recently for pulling into an empty bus lane about 2m too early in order to queue in the lane I needed at the next junction, which had no cars in it. That did annoy me but I suppose rules are rules.
  6. Sorry I can't help but I just wanted to say that the same thing happened to my son when he was younger and some lovely person on SF offered me a replacement (which he was eventually fooled into using!) and was a lifesaver. We now have 3 and he carries 2 around!! Hope the rabbit turns up. x
  7. I sign and share every petition or Facebook post about Ben Needham, just to keep it in the public eye. I've read Kerry Needham's book and would recommend it to change some of the slightly negative attitudes on here. The case was never investigated when it first happened - no-one went looking for him or did anything to help, it was an awful situation they were left in. There's nothing to say that a proper investigation now might bring up more information. The Needhams think they got very close to finding him many years ago but could not pursue it themselves (need to double check the details in the book as I forget why). Give them a break, it's only a petition, no-one's asking you to donate money (though that is what they survive on in their search for him) and as a mother myself I can't imagine what poor Kerry has been through, though the book comes close to sharing that feeling. Plus they are Sheffielders so should at least be able to count on local support. Thanks for posting Woodmally.
  8. £8 for adults/taller kids, £6 for smaller kids, £2.50 no rides, difficulty parking (to be expected at a fair) - thanks for the info but the rest of your post seems largely irrelevant. What utter codswollop about an Asian family being given prefential treatment, and borderline offensive description of the security man for not being White British. I hope you complained to the organisers rather than simply encouraging racist views on a public forum.
  9. I haven't read the whole of this thread as I know what tone it has taken, but is there any evidence of this "All out street warfare" other than the OP? Surely violence and disorder to that extent would have made national news and I knew nothing of it until reading this. There are problems on London Road but obviously that doesn't involve Roma so no-one can be bothered to mention them. Please don't tar all Roma with the same brush or over-exaggerate behaviour that is commonplace elsewhere in Sheffield on a Sat night.
  10. It just went down Ridgeway Road from Manor Top towards Gleadless Townend and the police cars herded it right up Hollinsend Road...apparently they're trying to catch it on Gleadless Road now. Big queue of traffic behind it! Does anyone know where it's from? It must be the same bull surely?
  11. I only heard about this this evening. I hope the cyclist is ok.
  12. Got to agree with you Fudbeer. It's all gone eerily quiet.
  13. That's so awful, I am so sorry for you and your poor cat, I would be devastated if my cat was even hit by a car never mind mauled to death in front of my eyes. Did you manage to identify the breeds of the dogs at all?
  14. I can't imagine you would ever know which cat made you swerve seeing as they would have darted in and out in a flash, so that is a pretty pointless argument. My friend has an outdoor cat who never goes out because she obviously doesn't like to, I have no problem with that, it's the cat's choice. Also some rescue cats who have only ever been indoor cats and are happy as such, no problem. I suppose my point is if you have an indoor cat, do you have to be constantly careful of not leaving doors and windows open? If so I would suggest the cat would be happier outside. If not, fair enough, the cat is content indoors. Personally, my 2 cats love nothing more than to laze around in the sunshine in the garden, or chase birds or butterflies. I can't replicate that environment for them inside my house. We have a cat flap so it is entirely their choice when they go out and come in.
  15. I would disagree as myself and my husband have "posh" accents (he is from the south but I am from much further north than Sheffield!) and our daughter also has a "posh" accent, so you cannot say she is not from Sheffield or trying to lose her Sheffield accent?? She was born here so is a Sheffielder is she not? I still struggle to distinguish between Sheffield, Chesterfield, Rotherham etc, though I can hear variations, I just never know which belongs to where! And I've lived here for 10 years... With my limited knowledge, I would say some people have a very "broad" Sheffield accent whereas others sound "posher" - I'm not sure why this is though, or perhaps the posher sounding ones aren't from Sheffield??
  16. 5 cats kept as indoor pets? I hope you have a mansion! I don't understand, if you are so worried about your cats being run over, why did you get them? Why not let some rural-dwelling cat lover give them a happier home instead? Isn't it like having a dog and never taking it for a walk? Life is about taking risks but we are all happier for it.
  17. I am financed directly from Slovakia, with a bonus for bigging up the Roma to the people of Sheffield. Oh no wait a minute, that's just a fictitious scenario, which the fabulous youngsters I work with are not.
  18. Totally agree Halibut. There are good and bad in every community and frankly I believe the content of a Channel 5 programme as much as I do the Daily Mail. I teach the Roma teenagers and they have come from such poor and persecuted backgrounds yet are such lovely and resourceful people, I think twice before believing the editing of a programme like this. If we can get them free healthcare because they are in desperate need of it, then we sort if for them. If we can guide the young Roma away from pregnancy (which is common and normal in their culture at such a young age) then we do our utmost to point them in the direction of the Sexual Health workers and College courses and ambition, which many do not have as they have always been excluded from everything (education, health care etc). Their Government want shot of them, in Slovakia at least, so who are we to turn them away without giving them a chance? I wish sometimes people would try to see the good in others instead of always the bad, especially when it is based on 3 people on a Channel 5 "documentary".
  19. Hear hear 1978. I feel Water Direct had some obligation, albeit of a charitable nature, to help the organisers out if non-payment had occurred - like you said, they knew what the water was for etc. so were somewhat irresponsible in simply not delivering it. Of course, we still don't know the full facts (a week on as bazjea said!) but I think it's high time another statement was issued.
  20. I am a cat owner and have had cats all my life and have never ever even contemplated keeping them indoors. Some cats do need to stay indoors for health reasons, but if you live somewhere where it is not safe for cats to go out e.g. on a busy road, I would suggest you do not get a cat but stick to a hamster or rabbit instead! Yes it is sad when cats get run over but at the end of the day they enjoy life chasing birds, exploring, climbing...who are we to prevent this on the off-chance that they stray in front of a car? Considering the number of cats in Sheffield, I have never seen one run over - if there were dead cats strewn all over the road constantly then I might agree with you :-) All you can do as a driver is try to find the owner of the cat if you do hit it or take it to a local vet, no-one is going to label you as a killer as we all know how invisible cats can be.
  21. Why are we discussing football on a thread about the Half Marathon fiasco? As fas I can tell, the people with the most sensible comments on here are those who ran the race, and they have only positive things to say about the running of the event next year. I do agree that the committee should be keeping their mouths shut until the facts are sorted - what if it turns out they bungled the emails and missed the vital payments information, Water Direct are not going to be too impressed at having their name in disrepute!
  22. I see a petition for changing the management committee utterly pointless - one glitch (albeit a major one!) in 30 odd years suggests an efficient team to me. Someone somewhere hasn't checked an email or logged something on a system - these things do occasionally happen, it's just unfortunate it was for a major event entirely dependent on it. I for one intend to run the half marathon next year (and it is a HALF marathon to all those calling it a marathon), injury permitting, and feel entirely confident that mistakes will be learned from and that next year's organisation will be better than ever. There was no water for 5-6 miles, my friend who ran it told me, but she was about in the middle of the field so water had started appearing at Ponds Forge (about 3 miles) by the time the back of the field came through. It is perfectly possible to run 6 miles without taking on water, provided it is not a hot day and you are properly hydrated beforehand and, frankly, if you're dehydrated before starting a half marathon, you haven't done your training properly. I'm not saying it's right that there was no water for that distance, just that I think those that collapsed would have done so whether it was there or not as that is not the only factor. I wonder how many posters on here have actually ever run a half marathon...go on, own up! :-)
  23. A question mark has been raised over this statement which states "We quoted" - does this suggest the order wasn't confirmed? Or are people reading too much into it... My argument over the PA issue is that the ones right at the back who had no clue why or if the event had been cancelled are generally the less fit, possibly first-timers, who will be more in need of water, so they were the ones most at risk IMO. Funny that people are debating cups vs bottles, myself and a friend had that very discussion yesterday outside Ponds Forge! I actually prefer cups as they are easier to slosh over your head and I feel there is less wastage - I slow momentarily to take a slurp, chuck it over my head, chuck the cup away and carry on. I find with bottles, I take a slurp (admittedly not having to do the egg and spoon race impression required with a cup), squirt a bit on my head, but then throw nearly a full bottle away which seems a huge waste. The small bottles are better, but I can see pros and cons of bottles and cups to be honest, in smaller races. In a mass participation event, however, I would imagine it's impossible to keep up with the demand for cups, so bottles would be the only feasible option, I would have thought? As for the refunds, it's interesting that for something like snow or injury we just accept cancellation or not being able to run, and don't expect our money back (unless we blame the weatherman/sky/God/dodgy knee etc) whereas when we feel someone hasn't done their job properly we want a refund! I can see why, but, as 999tigger put it, at the end of the day the runners just want an apology and some recognition of the inconvenience caused - £25 or so lost is not really going to make much difference to each individual whereas it would to the success of the event in the future.
  24. I went down to watch the race from Ponds Forge yesterday. We heard rumours it was delayed by half an hour, then that it was cancelled, then that it was cancelled but some were running it anyway. So we nipped into Ponds Forge and bought a few bottles of water and took some cups to share it out - the guy in the café there said the organisers (I assume) had been in asking for water that morning, but they couldn't just give all their water away! I think above and beyond the water issue is the bad PA system. One of my friends who ran it said she heard it was cancelled and hesitated for a second as she thought, is it a bomb or something, but then decided to follow everyone else. What if there had been a major security breach and an evacuation was needed? A good PA/communications system is vital. I agree with some posters that the contingency plan for any (or at least most) major part(s) of an event's infrastructure failing has got to be cancellation, you just can't have backup for water supplies for 5000 or so runners. Margaret Lilley was on Radio Sheffield this morning and refused to comment on who the water company was until a full investigation has been carried out. I also agree that something has to be done about the entry fees - if they refunded everyone, as Margaret said this morning, they still have to pay for all the other parts of the event organisation which could be disastrous for any chance of holding the event next year. BUT, maybe reduced entry next year or something like that, although I'm not sure how financially viable that is. I would be seriously annoyed if I'd entered then not been allowed to run because of bad management. So in conclusion, yes the water company have a lot to answer for but so do the event organisers who need to ensure an important message can be clearly communicated. Some runners near the back as they came up past Ponds Forge were so grateful for the water being offered and were clearly sweating a lot already, and these people at the back are more than likely the ones who didn't know it was cancelled. ---------- Post added 07-04-2014 at 10:06 ---------- Also, apparently they have used bowsers for years so this was not a new procedure or money-saving venture. And Ian and his wife who retired from volunteering last year dealt with race entries and results, nothing to do with the general management from what I've read. And I had to look up bowsers too - thought it was a typo at first :-) ---------- Post added 07-04-2014 at 10:06 ---------- You talk a lot of sense 999tigger :-)
