  1. I was there today. A great experience. Has there been an official estimate of the crowd size? I've scoured websites and social media and can't see anything.
  2. Are there any individuals or organisations that run Lightroom courses (beginners, intermediate or advanced) in the Sheffield area? I use the application regularly but feel I need professional guidance to get the most out of it.
  3. Quite. A lot of people vote on ephemeral emotions or ingrained beliefs. Or both. I see a lot of people on social media saying “something must be done”, but very few are actually committing any ideas. Other than ban all immigration and deport all Muslims, the latter in particularly being so breathtakingly ignorant and irrelevant it barely warrants a response. Frankly I have no idea how to counter radicalisation and religious dogma. A complete withdrawal of military force in Islamic countries will appease some with terrorist machinaitons, but would be largely irrelevant to those seeking a return to a mythical 7th century Caliphate. As an FYI, this is one of the best pieces I’ve read on the motivations of ISIS. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/384980/
  4. Voting. Specifically, voting for a party that will rein in the sale of arms to despot nations with strong terrorist affiliations. It won't solve the problem of people blowing themselves to bits on the lying promise of endless celestial nookie, but it's a start.
  5. Can anyone recommend a good teeth-whitening dentist/specialist in Sheffield? One done at the premises, not the take home trays. I can do a Google search but would rather base my decision other people’s experiences. Thanks in advance.
  6. Does anyone use an Ultra HD (4K) laptop or PC/Monitor combo? I’m thinking of buying an Ultra HD machine but have heard some applications really struggle with the high resolution. For example, menu options shrink to the point where there are unusable and media players (e.g. VLC) grind to a halt. I'd value anyone's direct experience. The compliant appears to be that 4K is a few years too early for nearly all applications. As the new machine will be purchased primarily for MS Office, web browsing, Lightroom photo editing and watching films , it’s a very big consideration. Thanks in advance.
  7. From what I can gather, the space will acknowledge a wide range of local sports, sportsmen and women, though football will likely take centre stage.
  8. Walking through Chapel Walk last night, I found out about a project called Sporting Sheffield. Today is the planned opening of their city centre café, store and gallery space which “offers the visitor a unique place and opportunity to meet, relax, enjoy and learn about the city’s enviable sporting heritage and narrative”. Sheffield’s role in the early development of football is often overlooked. There is certainly is very little in the city to signify it has the world’s oldest club AND oldest ground. I suspect this is going someway to address the issue. A genuinely exciting development for the often maligned city centre. More details here: http://www.sportingsheffield.com/
  9. I thought people might be interested in an update on this. The gathering mushroomed into a full blown house party with gangs of teenagers roaming around a private gated development. I rang 101 and they advised the activity couldn't be construed as anti-social behaviour as it was confined to a private residence. I pointed out that none of the people involved actually lived in the building and were effectively trespassing, but it cut little ice. This morning, the communal areas look trashed. And, in what I suspect was a related event, other residents in the area reported police cars chasing youths through the streets around 11pm. The worst thing about this is it could happen again tonight and as residents, we have very little comeback.
  10. Has anyone had issues with noisy AirBnB houses or flats? The flat directly below ours is on AirBnB and frequently used by large noisy groups. As I type this, there is a ridiculously loud party going on. I've logged a complaint to AirBnB, but not sure what good it will do in the long run. With an ever changing role-call of guests/tenants, where does the responsibility for behaviour lie? Is there a noise control team in Sheffield that can be called out to mediate on more immediate problems? We used to have one in London and they were excellent.
  11. Has anyone used Hassle.Com to book cleaners? I like the fact you can do it online, but the three month tie-in puts me off. https://hassle.com/uk/sheffield?cid=test_0014_20160816&gclid=CjwKEAjwhILABRDwo8mlqt6ug38SJACNSq_k2XTzxJ3q-UO4EOUvSQ-EFo8uPa5UC8p3qAscKerc2hoCnZ3w_wcB
  12. Surely most travelling fans had a fairly decent inkling it would be a second-string side? How many honestly expected to see Wednesday’s first team take to the pitch for a First Round League Cup game away at league Two opposition? Had Carlos announced the line up yesterday, would this have deterred fans from travelling?
  13. I think it depends on individual circumstance. Some people live their whole lives in the same street or neighbourhood as their parents. I imagine for them, the idea of family relocating to a different country must be horrifying. My parents divorced years ago and both have respective plans to move away from the area where I grew up. In my Mum’s case, the plan is to relocate to Malaga, which has a number of health benefits. Part of me will feel melancholy about the severing of ties with my childhood town, but it’s their life. I don’t think it’s fair or realistic to impose demands on someone who has dedicated their life to raising children and now wants to enjoy their retirement in a new and exciting environment. But this is just my opinion, invariably formed on my (admittedly) indifferent view of the family unit. I fully accept others will see things differently.
  14. On the way to Sheffield FC last night, I had an idle scroll through student accommodation in other cities. From a cursory scan, it seems Sheffield is still lagging behind other major metropolitan hubs in terms of ultra high-end student space. Take this in Leeds for example. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/student-accommodation/property-38398833.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/student-accommodation/property-60110528.html And in Manchester, properties coming in at over £1000 per person per month (!?) http://www.rightmove.co.uk/student-accommodation/property-58335317.html It's a different world to the woodchip one I knew all those years ago....
  15. I tried to reply to Cyclone's post via quote but for some reason the format kept getting mangled. On the subject of affordability: I can only speak from my own experience and that of people I know. A couple of my good friends earning sub 20K have a ceiling level of around £300-350 a month for rent. On the subject of standards: When I was at University in Sheffield ( 1994-1998 ) there was nothing comparable to the options available now. Most people I know lived in shabby shared houses or halls of residence and considered anything over £40 a week for accommodation to be pushing it. Even the more expensive options of, say, £50 a week, were shared rooms in fairly awful houses in the S11 area. These were the pinnacle of student lets. I realise a like for like comparison on rental prices is a little pointless given the time elapsed, but there was certainly nothing approaching a well-appointed 'designer' flat with mod cons. More power to anyone who can afford somewhere this nice. My original post was merely an observation that standards have increased considerably in the last few years. Out of interest, does anyone disagree with this view: that the best student accommodation on offer in Sheffield now is more luxurious and better appointed than the best that was on offer 10-20 years ago?
