  3. Thanks for that Hugh W i spent my younger years playing in that cemetery and always went across the white bridge from where i lived on Shirecliffe in the 40s-50s,at side of the two trees just to the left as you approached them was a mass grave the last time i was there it was covered with soil which had been tipped everywhere. At the other side of the bridge was the Zig Zag railings down to Club Mill Rd i couldnt believe that they had pulled this bridge down.In the 60s we used to ride our Trials motorbikes across it and on to the muckhills which was the spoils from the power station and were made by a cable and bucket system.I understand that at one time there was a tunnel under the railway line before the bridge was built but was filled in when a woman was attacked and murdered in it,i think the stream which is now piped ran through it.

  8. sorry to say this but for me the death knell came when they moved from Green Lane to the new place and stuck a £15 minimum purchase on stuff. The Rabbit warren was fine and the staff mainly helpful although some of the old dears on the counter were a bit miserable the office girls made up for that Wow some stunners there,The prices were fine and you could just go for one nut and bolt but all that changed when someone with big ideas wanted to take on the world and now its crumbled around him.Thats another slice of old Sheffield folklore gone now,RIP.
  9. Bill Beevers has been dead for years so has Charlie Freeman so your best bet for any information on this subject is the Vintage Motorcycle Club where they will have all the correct information you require Ian.Bill Beevers is a trade name now Bill lived in Castletown in the Isle of Man where i used to go and see him until he and his wife Lily died.Charlie Freemans shop doesnt exist any more it a block of flats called Freeman Court in Eckington.Dan Bradburys has not existed since the late sixties and was on London Rd.Hope this helps.Bill left the shop to his nephew Tom when he retired and then Tom sold it on along with the name.

  16. George Gill became a well known guitarist and played with many top groups including Joe Cocker and Frank White he travelled the world and married a French lady and had two daughters sadly the marriage didnt last and they drifted away from each other,George has credits on three films including one with Anita Eckberg and two Clint Eastwood ones.He liked the continent most of all and spent 26 yrs as a street Musician in Ohringen Germany where he also played in clubs and was well liked and respected.I walked past George on the street for many years not knowing who was under the beard and hat until he wasnt there one year,i asked where he was and they told me he had a throat tumour which had burst and he was rushed to hospital.George had no insurance so the shopkeepers and towns folk all chipped in for his care, after his operation the Council found him an apartment which his friends decorated out for him and furnished it.I asked who is the musician and my friends said oh an englishman so i asked his name and coud have dropped when they said it was George,so we arranged a meetingoutside the Key West a pub he went in with his friends. On the night down comes george no beard or hat but carrying John Firmingers book Dirty Stop outs, they all greeted him in German,i looked at him and said in broad Sheffield dialect Nahrden George ahr da guein on get di arse dahn here weev a lot to talk abaht he burst into tears and said he hadnt heard that for a long time and pulled up a chair,we then got chatting about Sheffield and the pubs he was upset when i told him most of his old haunts had gone, then we got on about friends and all his close friends of the day were also mine,he asked me if i knew Malcolm Hooley and told him yes for about 40yrs and my wife went to school with him he was stunned at that then he asked about Frank White and i told him like wise. That night made George a lot happier, sadly the operation needed reversing and he was frightened but it was a sucsess but he caught Mrsa which was the end of him. Before we left to come home he left two envelopes, one for Malcolm and one for Frank, when we got back i phoned Malcolm and he was stunned believing George to have been dead many years,i gave Frank his and like wise and he wouldnt start his gig until he had read the letter many times. Now George lies with his mother in a grave in Hutcliffe wood at the top near the church there are some big gates he is around there and his gravestone carries a picture of a Guitar,Sorry its a long piece but now every one knows. He told his friends there that he used to play with Joe Cocker and they all thought he was kidding so when Joe was playing in Scwabishhall they got him a ticket to go so when joe was on stage he saw George shouted him up and introduced him to everyone and did a few notes together,he was a hero after that.

  24. old tup.they were cable brakes the only rod on the brakes was from the handbrake to the cable compensators under the fuel tank. The thin tyres were also rubbish and it was generally noisy and sluggish but they ran forever.Did you know when it was chilly you could start the engine open the throttle under the bonnet and hold it flat out and watch ice build up on the carb base it was impossible to over rev them.If the cable brakes werent set properly you could go anywhere if you put them on hard.
