  1. Been reading some of the posts in here and was amazed to see lists of girls I knew back in the early 60s, some were in my class when I was there, and teachers as well....I thought Miss Coates was fair but strict... Mr Shaw was a sweetheart, he taught me in art, Miss Byard for scripture as it was called back then, and the biology teacher mentioned in another post that frightened the life out of you....Singleton... Miss Walton was my favourite PE teacher, Garrison was harsh and I hated the showers with its concrete floors and no privacy.... My maiden name was Metcalfe and my classes after the 2nd year were 3,4 and 5L...anyone in here from that time? would be great to hear a word from you.... Think I left in 1963:)
  2. Kinetic...thank you for such a comprehensive reply.. We didnt use their own measuring services and it states in the contract that without it, any problems with delivery are down to the buyer....us. I did try and appeal to the manager last year but he wouldnt budge from shop policy, which is anything over £100 is not refundable. I think CAB might be my best bet.... I e mailed them a couple of days ago, hoping to hear this next week. It was how the law sees shop policy that I want to know about and is it worth making a fuss PS I'm a female..Christine and I wont go there again..I feel trapped and obliged to spend another £220 in the hope they'll give the remaining 100 back
  3. cgksheff...I didnt want them to take them back, I wanted them in my front room. My son did his best to persuade the men that delivered to keep trying but they gave up and took the furniture back, it was their decision, not mine. In fact my son felt with a bit more effort the job would have been done. Its not like I'm asking for the whole of the cost back, I bought a sofa and chair that happened to be about £300 cheaper.. My son also measured everything, we took those with us with warnings about access, so they knew what they were taking on. Yes its my fault I didnt pay the fee for their services, I'm well aware of that
  4. Chris774....I agree, we didnt use their measuring service which is where the problem lies and they wont take any responsibility. The manager said that he'd had to store the settee and one armchair till they had room in the showroom for them...and I do appreciate that. I just thought as we'd spent money with them anyway on another chair and sofa that I didnt really want, as they are nothing like what we originally ordered, they might show some good will and refund what was left over. They currently have well over £300 in an account forced on me, I didnt ask for it, they told me thats where my pennies would stay till I found something else to buy. So far I've seen nothing I want to buy and I've been so upset at the way they've hung on to what was left over. Sorry if I keep harping on about it, but I was stunned when they told me what the deal was...I've already spent over £2000 with them on furniture in the last 2 years.... Kinetic I dont have a credit card, its a debit one. I'm 65 on a state pension.
  5. Thank you Dongle might do that...will see what comes back from the e mails first..thanks
  6. Thanks They can hardly refuse me my cash at all, its mine!! Call it change if you like from what I've already spent, thats exactly how I see it.. I got an instant reply from the Furniture Ombudsman who couldnt help, but recommended Trading Standards so I've e mailed them, also CAB, waiting to hear. Dont know why I didnt think of TS, had good advice from them in the past. Thanks anyway
  7. Thanks for the links although I was hoping for a more personal answer. I know about CAB and the link for the other one doesnt look appropriate as they seem to charge for their help. I've had a look and e mailed them in case they can offer any advice.
  8. I need some help or advice re the Furniture For Less store on Chesterfield Road, next door to Hombase We (my son and I) went up there beginning of september last year to buy a new settee and one armchair. Had a good look round and decided on what I wanted. I didnt take their offer of a pre measure of things as they charged £25, we took our own up there and warned them how difficult it might be to get the furniture in. We have an end terrace with steps down to the back door and a front door that opens directly onto the stairs with dining room and front room off left and right, so not much space. They accepted our measurements and settee and armchair arrive about a month later but it wont come in the house, they took both back to the shop telling us we'd have to choose another. Travel up there again and I asked the manager for my money back, but because I hadnt done the professional check they offered they said no, they had furniture on their hands taking up space, I'd have to pick something else which I did. I didnt spend the same amount, I got a cheaper settee under pressure and then felt obliged to choose an armchair that didnt match, because they didnt have one to match the settee, it was a sale item. Chair and settee finally arrive and with a bit of pushing and shoving the settee is in, the chair was easy as it was an upright. My problem is that because the money left over is more than £100 they wont give it me back Its shop policy I'm told...gutted and I wouldnt mind but the previous year I'd bought a bed costing over £500, I was spending money left to me by my mother. The money left in what is apparently "my account" with the shop has been there about a year:( Been up there since to try and buy something else but there was nothing suitable. I've no idea what the law is on this kind of "shop policy" and would value any help you can give as to how wrong or right they are in their decision...
  9. You're absolutely right myriad its not but I know there's a Robin and Hood somewhere....I never was very good at finding my way round....Not to worry. We had a good meal at the W&H Everyone was happy with what they ordered and we're going again next sunday before my aunt goes home to Weymouth, looking forward to it...
  10. Thats our alternative if we're not happy with the W&H. We've decided to meet up, have a drink in the Waggon and see how the land lies, but if the reports in here are anything to go by, its not looking good and we'll be walking across the road to the Robin Hood....
  11. I hope its ok because we're taking an elderly relative to the W&H on sunday for dinner, she had her wedding reception there sometime back in the 1940s!! and I had a blind date there around the late 80 early 90s. Had a lovely steak with a half bottle of White Tower Fingers crossed things have improved...
  12. Why do people have to bring politics in!! Its a wedding for goodness sake. a time to celebrate
  13. I googled it and found a couple of newspaper reports, think one was the Gazette, forget the other but both reliable. My daughters coming from Wales for 4 days and she was keen to find a street party celebrating the royal wedding. I wish there was one nearer to home really but we'll probably end up in town
  14. I've had a quick look and for those who want to celebrate the royal wedding there are around 33 street parties in Sheffield so far. One will be on and around Devonshire Green along with the start of its music festival, and no doubt the town centre will be getting into the spirit of things We'll see the ceremony on tv and then pop into town for an hour or two...
