  1. I`m diabetic so have to test my bloods every day , also have taken Atenolol for high BP for ten years and until recently a statin , Crestor . The statin has been dropped due to side effects but its a case, for me anyway, of thinking positively that sometimes, we need medical help and if this means rattling a little, so be it if it keeps us well, good luck
  2. As a diabetic , I`ve found that lowering carbs works for me, lowers the bloody sugar and creates weight loss . A brilliant bread is Burgen soya and linseed , most major supermarkets sell it and its lovely . Each slice contains under 12 gr of carbs per slice, almost half of all other breads including wholemeal or granary . Leave out the rice too and if you cant give up on pasta , eat very small portions and substitute mashed swede or celeriac for potato , you will feel much better in a few days and will lose weight !
  3. When my teenage grandson asked me what it was like to grow up in the olden days
  4. I`m diabetic and what i do is to test first thing in the morning , a fasting test, blood sugars should register no more than 7 . Then , to get a really good idea of what food is causing BG to raise, test directly before a meal and then two hours after, the tow hour reading should be under 7 . If it isnt, then its two things , too much food and the wrong food too ! I honestly dont find that fats make any difference but carbohydrates do , even the starchy ones ! If he follows a regime of lowing the carbs he eats , which means that bread, rice, pasta and potato is restricted severely , he should find his numbers falling . If you need any advice, PM me x
  5. First of all , I am so pleased that you have your daughter back in your life . My advice would be to allow her to set the pace . Dont beat yourself up about the lost years and dont waste precious time by trying to make up for them , you cant, they have gone . Look now to the present and future , dont set your expectations too high just yet , be there for her but dont push yourself, remember she was the one to find you so she wants you in her life but in her time , good luck x
  6. I expect the powers that be think its bad for us !! I remember going to the Stores with my Nanan , I can smell that shop now , parafin and tubs of lose butter and broken biscuits !
  7. Nice that you can afford to do that. some of us cant . I`m on a state pension and gave £5 to a local childrens hospice who are in desperate need , its all I can afford but I didnt feel the need to tell anyone, until now of course !! Its just not fair to pressure people, especially when money is so tight , just my humble opinion Kate
  8. I`m in bits , what an ending , but it cant be the end , can it ?
  9. Here here to the last two posts . Why the heck should I feel inferior to anybody ?
  10. You have my deepest sympathy and admiration too . I lost a very dear friend two years ago , to alcoholism . She had been told to stop , she knew that her liver couldnt take anymore but sadly, despite help and support, the battle was lost as she couldnt manage without her fix . No one should mock but unfortunately, they do . Its not until he admits his illness that he can even begin to start to climb the ladder , I wish you all the luck in the world, Kate
  11. I think its very sensible , rather than doing what many people do and getting into serious debt just to please others . We have a large family, 6 children and 14 grandchildren and are now on pension credit, I`v forwarned all of them that presents for the grandchildren will be scaled down to £10 each and no presents for the adults . Most are fine with that, there is no alternative other than take out a loan, no way .
  12. Really sorry to hear this , gone through it too so I understand your distress . Maybe you could take a look at a website called http://www.ivillage.co.uk which is for all aspects of life and its problems . You`ll find a forum for Separation and Divorce, its easy to find, men and women talk about their own experiences and help one another through, emmotionally and with practical advice too , good luck Kate
  13. Thanks a lot , my friend is going to do it for me at the weekend and put all my pics on memory sticks for me too, thanks Kate

  15. Hi , I have a Sony Vaio laptop , only 9 months old, its 2BG memory and I`m very happy with it . I also have a PC so run on BT Home Hub just fine . I would like to give my grandchildren the PC as I dont really have the space for it .Would I be able to use Microsoft Word on my laptop please ? I currently only have it on the PC and need it for my study . I know I will have to download all my photos to memory sticks but am concerned that Word will work OK on the laptop before I make any promises, thank you Kate
  16. Thanks Jackie, I`ve been wondering how you all were . Lily is at the Vets today , we decided to bring the appointment forward because she had another seizure despite being on the phenobarbs and her behaviour is really strange too , she cries a lot and is very clingy, poor little love must be so scared , its horrible . Take care and thanks for your good wishes , Kate x
  17. Hi trixie , if you feel uncomfortable talking , the Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Support Service also have an e mail service you can use . They are all trained supporters and can really help, pbssmail@bluecross.org.uk Sometimes, its just that you need to express your feeling and emmotions and writing them down is a really good way to help you to cope . If you need any help , send me a PM with your number but otherwise, please try the e mail service, I wish you all the very best and again , so sorry for your sad loss, Kate xxx
  18. I am so very sorry for your loss, its one I have also suffered . I am a voluteer for The Blue Cross who have a wonderful helpline for people who need to talk about their loss, maybe it may help you ? Its Pet Bereavement Support Service on 0800 096 6606 Kate x
  19. Oh thats good news ! Lily is on her second day of the phenobarbs, so far its just made her a bit more sleepy but at least no seizures and she was having them regularly so fingers crossed . Kate x
  20. Epiphen contain phenobarbital I think , Lily has hers 12 hours apart too . They seem to have knocked her out , shes snoozed all afternoon ! I just hope they help, for your boy too Kate xx
  21. Thanks Moonbird . Our Lily has now been put onto phneobarbs as the seizures started coming thick and fast . She had one at the Vets, he says that they are definately Partial Seizures where just part of the brain is affected , most likely due to the head injury she suffered .Poor little lamb, she was so distressed last night, found it hard to cope , its really tough, Kate x
  22. Oh Jackie, I am so very very sorry . i know what you and your family are going through because I`m there too although nowhere near as bad as you`ve had it . Your family made the kindest and most selfless decision for Bonnie, her poor body had taken enough, my thoughts are with you , Kate xx
  23. The problem as I see it is that this whole area of seizures seems to be one of mystery for Vets as well as owners , there are no concrete answers . Because unusualy brain activity only shows up on scans when the dog is actually having a seizure, it leaves diagnosis down to descriptions, which isnt good . I think that the time comes for all of us when we have to evaluate the quality of life and if we feel that nothing more can be done, hard decisions have to be faced . I am sorry Kate x
  24. A lovely Bet Midler film that brings me to tears ......... For the Boys
