Sheffield's nightclubs - do you remember...?
gladys clark replied to Chris M's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
At 15 (looking 25 in my "cocktail dress") the Locarno was quite sophisticated a guy asked my if I wanted a drink (I didnt drink) and trying to look "grown up" asked for a dry sherry!!! spent tne next hour looking like I'd sucked a lemon. Went dancing at the City Hall the Students Union and Nether Edge hall (jazz) and jiving at Frechville early 60's -
Can you remember your first wage and how much ?
gladys clark replied to shaznay's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
1963/4 was an apprentice hairdresser at Enzo (Squillino) of Rome on Abbeydale Rd, Wage should have been £2.10 shillings a week but he paid us £5.00 we worked for it and learnt a lot from day one also made a few bob a week in tips. Loved it there he had real "attitude" always immaculate in black suit white shirt and diamond studded wedding ring. -

gladys clark replied to kezzzza's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Coal Aston in the late fifties Everly's and Elvis not to mention Eddie Cochran and Brenda Lee with widge, pat, gordon, kenny, gill, then a new one opened nearer home at the top of green lane, the new methodist church so we swopped allegiances, it was good but didn't quite have the same atmosphere. ex - dronfielder -

Anybody from Hackenthorpe?
gladys clark replied to Zumba Zebra's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I lived in Dronfield but my friend at school was Catherine Grainger who lived in Hackenthorpe we went to Notre Dame late 50's early 60's. We used to go to Frecheville, Nether Edge, City Hall and the Sheffield Students Union anywhere to dance even sometimes the Locarno think it was at the end of the Moor. If 'Clancy Grainsweet' (her alias ) is out there she may like to know that Lynne Clark has been in touch with Dympna Danaher who now lives in Canada -
Its amazing the detail that can be remembered at a time like this. We lived in Holme Lane Hillsborough and I too remember the night before the storm, I said to my dad isn't the sky weird it was a bright lilac colour and it had gone very still and silent no birds singing. We slept downstairs that night, the next door shop 's kitchen chimney came down and when we did eventually venture out it was a hell of a mess. [it was very gusty and the wind howled last night here in swindon and as usual I did not get off to sleep till it had dropped ] I was nearly 15 in 62 and can remember 'The Moor' looking like a war zone
