  1. was a great school. boys and girls were separated with a netball ground inbetween both schools that we weren't supposed to cross. both Mr & Mrs Stribley's offices overlooked this section. There were 2/3 more netball pitches outside. Entering the school was the cloakroom and toilets supervised by head girl and prefects (head girl was chosen by vote, prefects were chosen by teachers). We were not allowed to run anywhere. Girls School had an oblong hall with a full proper stage at the end and classrooms on either side. behind and the stage and to the left was the sewing room with sewing machines and to the right was the art room with easels. we would use these rooms to get changed in when we had plays (usually Shakespeare direct by Mrs Dent) we also had a biology room laid out like a laboratory with bunsen burners (Miss Ellis) and a fully stocked library (which the swimming team, of which I was one, would rest in before going to a competition) Miss Cooper was our PE and Geography teacher. Mrs Stribley had dashund dogs which were walked round the playing fields by any pupil chosen, she used to smoke balkan sobranie cigarettes. opposite the stairs to her office was a large cupboard that housed all the Shakespearan costumes. going through the caretakers entrance (he had a house in the grounds) was the school flat which each 4th year pupil would spend a week in learning how to run a house. The hall floor had a badminton layout on which deportment classes were held walking the lines with books on your head. taught many a girl to walk straight and upright no slouching, myself included. The hall was used for assemblies, gym and plays/concerts. both the Boys and Girls schools had a choir and each Christmas would put on a carol concert. We only used the Boys school once for practice as when the high notes were hit the plaster fell on you. Boys and Girls had separate entrances we were not allowed to mix only on choir days, sports day and heavy snow when it was girls against boys snow fight. The school was fairly strict but fair and minimum use of cane only for very serious matters and only given by headmistress and deputy head. It has always reminded me of a Girls Boarding School you would read about in comics apart from not sleeping over. All of the teachers were women we only ever had a male teacher (who was very much admired) when they were in teacher training or standing in for a teacher. Both I and my sisters went there, as 1st/2nd year it was bottle green pinafore dress and short white socks, 3rd/4th year bottle green skirt white blouse, long white socks. We had 4 houses, Anderson (yellow), Nightingale (red), Curie(green) and Cavell(blue) for which house points were given out and at the end of a year whichever house won had their colour ribbon on the school shield. I am pleased the school is still in use.
  2. My late brother frank monks worked at firth Vickers as a metallurgist in the foundry from leaving school. He died in a motorbike accident on weedon street in 1973 aged 30. At his funeral his work colleagues and hockey team former a guard of honor.
  3. I was in and out of the Old Jessops during the 70's upto mid 80's quite often, with miscarriages, ops and bed rest to try and stop miscarriages. there was a section near the theatres (4th Floor) that was supposed to be haunted by a "Sister" who had committed suicide by throwing herself off the roof. There were certainly parts of that hospital that felt very strange and more so on the 4th floor.
  4. I had the 41 (First) from halfway through to the moor, where I would get off and then get a 75/76/97 or 98 to Abbeydale Rd/Woodseats where I work. cost £17.50 . I am now limited being at halfway to the 120 stagecoach, as all other buses run from crystal peaks. I buy a £10.50 megarider to town, and then get on the 87 going up abbeydale road. I am saving myself £7 a week. but so far first day trying it out monday 120 was 8 minutes late and 87 broke down in town and had to get the next one. I am lucky in that I also have a bus pass (have to pay to get to work in the morning) so can get any bus back into town but can only get a 120 stagecoach back to halfway. twice this week the 120 going home has broken down. thursday night caught the 120 first to c.peaks as the stagecoach had broken down. after a bit of shopping waiting at c.peaks for for a 120 stagecoach counted 6 x 120 first buses coming into c.peaks, more or less one behind the other, with very few passengers. Yes it's a little frustrating that only stagecoach now serves my area but, apart from odd breakdowns, or late turning up. I have sussed getting to work and saved myself some money.
  5. had the petrol voucher at morrisons at halfway but there's been no offer of £25 like they did at christmas. is it only at certain morrison stores?
  6. and I wonder if the cafe you are talking about was my friends mums my friend was Janet Hussain now her mum was white but if I can remember correct I think her dad was arab? there was a pinball machine next to the door her father I believe was from pakistan and yes her mum was white , mind plays tricks now but I think they came from hull - being muslim they used to have their "priest" come in and kill chickens, first time frightened the life out of me seeing them flapping in the sink where I used to make the big pots of tea and smell when they were being gutted. but she made a mean chicken curry. very nice people to work for. worked there to pay for my way in college and met my first husband there. Mate of Pop Hobson, who rode his bike often with a broken limb!!!
  7. I no longer have the record player but loads of 45 rpm records, some with the middles missing that you used to buy second hand from the juke boxes.
  8. yes someone falling of the roundabout at speed in terry street rec, his leg went under it and gouged a big hole on inside of his thigh, and ambulance taking him away to hospital. and scraped knees when you came of the swings.
  9. just been reading through this and brought back lots of memories. jant monks was always taken for one of the gurnills with having red hair. and my uncle used to drive the horse cart with dolly his shire horse. and keens used to collect the pig swill from the bins in the yard. had 2 bins one for refuse and one for food so recycling was done then. and apart from outside toilet had a shed for coal. I used to work in the cafe opposite cosy furnishings when it was taken over after the sasparilla man left. mostly motorbikers and introduced chicken curry to them as well as usual chips and tea. ladding it up and down the cliffe big net underskirts and beehives.

  15. have you called crystal peaks so that they can check cleaners carts/toilets - also double check inside your handbag, Ilost a very old wedding ring of grandma's that I used to wear on my right hand - looked all over for it and then another day found it in my handbag, it had slipped off when I had gone into the handbag for my purse.
