  1. Hi - We have a 1930s semi that has a bitumen coating over the roof tiles. This is old and now peeling in places. The majority of the roof is sound but we need to fit a skylight to the front and remove/replace a very heath robinson leaking skylight on the back. We have been renovating the attic and have exposed the back of the tiles on the back section and have been insulating the underside of the tiles as well on the front. We will be looking to replace the roof in the next five years but at the moment just need to know expected price and likelihood of removing the old skylight and fitting three new skylights to the existing roof ( we will do all the inside work) Thanks Owen
  2. The pub in Woodseats high st has boards up now and The Norton has stopped taking debit cards ( always a bad sign as it may be down to the bank restricting availability of credit)
  3. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and a potential liability may exist if employees were pressurised into travelling by car or foot when conditions were dangerous. That was cut from the BBC website last Feb If your boss phoned you up and said get into work or you're sacked and the authorities were saying that travel is dangerous the boss is forcing you to put your job against your safety and is therefore liable if anything happens to you. The same goes for getting home in cases when your have been told you must work but are also told travelling is dangerous. As for helping you to the toilet this will be covered under the Disability Discrimination Act
  4. Isn't there a recent road rage law that can be used - something like making threats on a public highway ?
  5. Getting back to the original question employers have a duty of care towards their employees. In practical terms they have to look after them and ensure that they come to no harm whilst in their care. This can extend to making sure that they get home safely if by being at work the journey home becomes dangerous. Therefore by insisting that employees stay in the office they become liable for ensuring that they get home okay.
  6. Thanks for the replies - we were after either an open fire or woodburner (depending on the simplicity of installation) I'll check out Hearth & Home
  7. Hi, Our chimney has been inspected and we've been told it needs a flue liner. We would like to have an open fire in the room so need some quotes to have the work done. I'm guessing that it would need a stainless steel liner Thanks Owen
  8. Big Dick's Board Shop on Imperial Rd has some
  9. Andrew Liu at lupton fawcett has just done our conveyancing on an auction property that had to be completed in 20 working days. After having some terrible soliciors in the past can't recommend him enough
  10. Thanks - The chimney is on an outside wall so no neighbour worries but I'm more concerned about the need to get the paperwork as we would want to sell sometime.
  11. I need to open out a fireplace in the kitchen to fit a range cooker in the opening, with an extractor hood above. As it will be supporting the rest of the stack do I need to get a structural engineer to quote the beam size to go across the top? Also if needed has anyone got an idea of price to have someone do it ?
  12. We rent a house and the boiler is an ancient thing that uses an extraordinary amount of gas and heats up the water to an excessive heat. None of this stops the boiler being safe and providing hot water and heating but as some one who rents and pays the bills do I have a say in getting a more modern boiler fitted ? (icon has got nothing to do with the post just liked his eyebrows) This is a bit academic as I'm moving soon but was just wondering how it stands
  13. We've just moved to Sheffield so it was our first Fright Night and we were all impressed. The street entertainment was great, especially the 1950 freak show by the City Hall, as well as the Beetle band. I'd looked on the forum and people recommended going at dusk and we left at 8, by which time the teenagers were starting to strut around like peacocks on heat so I guess we had the best of it by then. Okay there was some trouble but there must have been 30k people in a small space and the vast majority were out to have a good time.
  14. Come on who hasn't strapped something to the roof of a car in such a way you couldn't open the doors
