  1. During the Miners' Strike they sent the majority of the students home, but in order to keep the heating ticking over, the smallest course, who were non P.E. students, remained. If I remember correctly there were 36 of us. Part of the time we stayed in college & were frozen. I can remember going to bed in a jumper, cardigan, woollen hat & fishing socks. lol. Later we were farmed out to other peoples houses. My friend & I stayed at a house in Nether Haugh, it seemed a very long walk up & down Cortworth Lane.
  2. The Rockingham's did own Whistlejacket, he was the Marquis's horse. George Stubbs (painter) was paid 60 Guineas for it c. 1762. The 11 million pounds previously mentioned came from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 1997 & allowed the National Gallery to acquire the painting. Interesting, 1066, I was at LMC 1971-74.
  3. Thank you for your good hopes Medusa, I'm not sure if there are different levels of intolerance. I found with my daughter-in-law that the slightest deviation caused masses of problems. At the time she was diagnosed, her Consultant asked if any other family members had certain health problems, which were apparently the result of un-diagnosed Gluten Intolerance & so they had & were subsequently advised to be tested. Her Mother & Aunt were then diagnosed, both had been that way for over 20 years & had no idea. I was amazed when I researched this as to how many people are unaware they have it. Kind Regards. BL.
  4. The problem with Gluten Free food is the environment in which it has been cooked. My daughter-in-law was diagnosed as Coeliac 18 months ago, after loads of tests & many years of illness. She can't eat any food which has been prepared or cooked in a utensil which has previously been used for food with Gluten, we have adapted accordingly. It's a horrid thing to have & I really feel for anyone who goes through it. Having said that, once she was properly diagnosed we have found it very easy. She joined the Coeliac Society & was sent a very good directory of eating places throughout the UK which have gluten free food. Hope this helps.
  5. Yes I could, however I want them on card & there's quite a lot of colour involved. Have researched this & for such a small number plus the lack of hastle, I would rather have them professionally printed, thank you for your reply. BL.
  6. Thanks Bludragonfly, I've checked on line & they only seem to print in large numbers (min: 500), anyway I'll give them a call on Monday, you never know.
  7. We need 50 Party Invitations printing, we have our own design, any recommendations please?
  8. Just checked Loch Fyne website, they serve lobster, not sure of the price or the quality.
  9. Remember years ago, at the cinema, when they had adverts for "The World of Peter Stuyvesant" it was pronounced Sty-Ve-San. Those adverts went on for ever, or so it seemed to me (1960's) they were like mini travelogues.
  10. Do you mean Poseurs at Parkhead? I used to use them over 20 years ago on Surrey St, so it's not like Poseurs is a young company. Very surprised if it has closed.
  11. Do any pub carveries serve lamb? It's my favourite & I've only ever seen it served at carveries outside Sheffield.
  12. First time at this Indian Restaurant tonight, will certainly go again, loved it. Food great, attractively presented, staff charming & attentive. Not the cheapest in which I've eaten, that was in Birmingham a few years ago & the less said about that the better, copious visits to the bathroom were involved. £120 for 6 including drinks, well worth every penny.
  13. Thanks all for your helpful replies. In the end I bought it from Boldocks, poached it on Saturday put it in the fridge overnight & then skinned it Sunday (leaving the head & tail on). I dressed it with cucumber to look like fish scales & made a Dill, Honey & Mustard Sauce. It was really yummy, very succulent & enough left for Supper on Monday. Bonus.
  14. Yes, I enjoy TF, he's cool. Rony Robinson is just tragic, an old bloke who is just pretending to be something he is not, in order to pander to what he thinks the average listener will enjoy. Boring.
  15. I have a 9.5lbs Ham in the freezer which I intend to cook sometime tomorrow (Sat) for a buffet on Sunday. How long will it take to defrost & which is the best way. Many thanks.
  16. Thanks to all of you, really helpful. Taken to Walk-In this a.m. Very nice people.
  17. Could someone point me in the right direction, please. I have a friend staying with me who is from abroad, an old infection has flared up & she needs antibiotics. No, before anyone starts it's not an STD, just a genuine question. Thanks.
  18. I know that he became an Evangelical Christian & worked with The Navigators for about 8 years from 1970 onwards. I used to see him jogging quite often when I was visiting relatives in Oughtibridge.
  19. I found it very interesting & surprising, that in Italy, homecooks, 95% of the time, use dried Pasta. Always cooked 'al dente' & the pasta added to the sauce & not the sauce poured on top, as we have sometimes been told in this country. Yum!
  20. Try Abbotts on Abbeydale road, they have a website. I bought my Mundial knives from them, paid about £45 for the 8", £20 for the 3.5", which do most jobs for me. Also bought a very good pair of Poultry Shears from them. If you are investing in good knives it might be a good idea to buy a steel, they will be more than happy to show you how to use it. Hope this is of use to you.
  21. Thanks for that, understand new managers going in Mid-August.
  22. Can anyone tell me which brewery has The Ball Inn at Crookes? Thanks.
  23. There was a family named Else who lived on Garry Road, off Far Lane, Sheffield 6. His name was Stan, think he taught at Wisewood School. His wife was Joyce, nee Marriott, she was an Elocution Teacher, they had a daughter, Ruth.
